On September 18, 1977, NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft captured the first-ever photograph showing both Earth and the Moon in a single frame, taken from 7.25 million miles away while flying above Mount Everest on the night side; engineers at JPL had to artificially brighten the Moon by a factor of three because Earth's greater reflectivity would have otherwise made the Moon invisible in the image.
