This video demonstrates how to construct shed rafters and side wall supports, including cutting bird's mouth joints for rafter installation, installing hurricane hangers and L-brackets for structural stability, and creating side triangle plates to connect the double top plate to the rafters. The builder also addresses common challenges like accounting for double top and bottom plates when planning wall height, which can result in unexpected height differences.

Building the rafter and roof side supports on the shed!Added:
Later in the day, we got some more lumber. We're doing our bird bird mounts. I'm sorry I didn't show you guys. I kind of got a little busy, but this is what this one was our template.
We cut that one originally with the sawsaw. It did okay. It's really hard to get blade started. As you can see there, it's kind of all chomped up and stupid.
So, my buddy suggested to use the multi-tool. I don't know if I really like this cuz it's kind of just burning it. But, it did cut a little bit straighter and flatter than the sawsaw did. So, um, I'm going to flip this guy around and show you guys the multi-tool cutting through this 2x6.
Technically, it's only cutting through the 2 in, but I mean, it did a pretty decent job. But, like I said, I I got my bird mouth template from that guy, and it did pretty good.
is burning it pretty bad. But I don't know. Got two. I mean, it does cut a lot straighter, a lot flatter.
Get that off with my hammer. But yeah, I don't really know if I like the multi-tool use. I know. I don't really like the sawsaw, but it's what I got.
Using what I got, so I don't have a jigsaw.
Yeah.
Heat.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat. Hey, heat. Hey, heat.
I'm not a carpenter.
Um, but this is what we have done. So, we got the walls up. Got the raptors on only on the fronts. So, we got a hurricane hanger and the uh Don't look too close to that.
We did our bird mouths on the truck and um we got the hurricane hanger on the side and out bracket on each side. We still have to do blocking in between so we'll do our blocking later. Um but so far pretty good. I'm pretty happy with the way it's turned out today. I'm exhausted. Cam's exhausted. And um we're going to have a place that we can actually walk into, which is exciting.
Um but yeah, a lot to do still. It's still a little flimsy, but it's okay. Once we get the siding on, it'll be cool. We got a lot to do still.
Lot to do.
>> It's cold today, isn't it?
>> Yeah, a little cold. It's about 40°. Uh just putting in our hurricane times for today cuz we didn't do it last weekend.
And yes, this is not a channel that gets everything knocked out in one day.
We take our time because we don't know what we're doing half the time.
Okay, that's enough on that one.
So, I'm a little disappointed in our filming of this section of the build. I noticed on YouTube that nobody talks about this and nobody really has a video on what they did for these side corner pieces. Essentially, from your high wall to your low wall to your rafter. What we wind up doing is putting an extra 2x4 under the 2 by6 rafter, cutting it diagonally on each side so it actually fit against the front 2x4 and into the jam where the 2x6 at the rear contacts the main wall. What that does is provide structure to the roof and then as well it gives us a spot to add our side studs that connect our double top plate to our rafter. So you can kind of see here at the end is what it looks like when it's done. That's what we did. It was super simple. Hopefully you guys can kind of pick up on what we did if you guys need to reference this.
All right. Like I said, this is our first shed. This is supposed to be 8t wall 6T at the back.
Uh-oh. All right. So, what has happened is I did not account for the double top plate and I did not account for the essentially double bottom plate. So, we're 8' 6 in to the very top here to our very bottom baseboard. Now, a lot of people don't put their siding up to the baseboard, but we are. And we're going to coaul around it. So, that leaves us with an issue of I don't know what to do. So, we're going to have essentially one giant piece of siding and then 6 in at the top, which is no bueno, but it's going it's going to be what we're going to have to do, which makes it interesting because I don't know what I'm supposed to do here cuz my sighting's at 8T. I was gonna have the sighting come all the way up to the edge of the rafter and then drip edge off the edge and so it would rip it this way down and it would end here which these should have been nails. So now they're going to protrude and be stupid and ugly. Um yeah, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. We'll figure it out. But this is the the part of it. So and this supposed to be 6T. If I go from the bottom here, we're 6 foot 6 in. Same thing. Double top, double bottom.
Um, whoops. Didn't account for that. We should have cut all these studs down. 6 in. And that's why it's so tall. That's why it looks so tall cuz it's 6 in higher than I imagined it to be. And obviously, I'm not taking it down. So, we're just going to cut I mean, the back's easy. cut it at 66, but the top is where it gets interesting. Um, so what we just finished doing to fill you guys in, we did these side triangle plates. Nobody, not one person on YouTube talked about how to do this portion. Not one person.
Everybody's like, "Oh, just put your walls up and put the roof on." Nobody talks about this part. Um, so I'll tell you how I did it. I already had a double top plate, so I cut this guy at an angle, set him at the top to support the top rafter, and then I cut these and tow nailed them in. That's how I did it. Is that the right way to do it? I have no clue, but that's how I did it. So, did it on both sides. And this is just to to to screw the sheeting tube, uh, the siding. We have our house wrap and we can do that next, but it just now comes really convoluted when it comes to what the heck we're going to do with the siding and the raptors poking out over the 8 foot and everything. And then nobody talks about this stuff on YouTube. So, we need to put our blocking in between here.
I did a bird's mouth. It's not 6 in anymore. It's like 5 and 38. So, I'm going to have to cut my blocking down my cuz I bought, you know, 2x 6x8s to uh do blocking, but it's 5 and 38. So, now I need to rip it. I don't have a table saw. So, um you know, we're just figuring it out as we go. This is the part that nobody talks about. It's not easy. It's uh it's it's weird. This is my first go. I'm not a carpenter by any stretch of the imagination. They did a double I mean I did king side for the door. That's the only thing that uh I think is like the right thing here. Um but anyway, so that's where we're at.
House wrapping siding can essentially go on. We put our hurricane ties on the back back there and then our L brackets on the opposite side. I don't even know if that's how hurricane ties are supposed to go, but I put them on there.
You can see that this stud is completely crooked. But I already had my double top plate on. So this stud is crooked.
That's on the 16 on center. But this stud is crooked. Same with this one because it was crooked when we put it together. Did I fix it? No. But that's how it is. Anyway, um we're going to keep going. I think I mean if we try real hard, we can get the siding on today, but it's really really windy and doing the house wrap in the wind is going to suck. It's going to super suck.
Um but we'll figure it out.
We'll figure it out.
