Frost, frost, maybe?

[00:00:00]It's Thursday, May 21st. I'm meteorologist Kayla Mitchell in the CTV News Atlantic Weather Centre. Well, spring is a transition season, which means conditions can change quickly. The last couple of days we were talking about record-setting high temperatures, and now we're talking about a risk of frost in the Maritimes as some low temperatures during the night will fall down towards the low single digits, some flirting with the freezing mark. The skies will be clear and the winds will be light, and that is the recipe for risk of frost. Here's a little frost risk map around the Maritimes for tonight, so that's Thursday night into early Friday morning. Through the faint blues, that is a low risk of some patchy frost, and then into the purples and pinks, that is a higher risk and could be a more widespread frost. You can see that's around northern central areas of New Brunswick, but a frost risk as well into parts of Nova Scotia. And because of that, it's no surprise that we do find some frost advisories issued for the Maritimes. It is not that unusual to have a risk of frost this time of the year. The general rule is for basically to be done with frost is to wait until after the June full moon. I think for the Maritimes, that's generally a pretty good rule. Though this year, the June full moon is coming up right at the end of that month, June 29th, and that will be the strawberry moon. Now, if we want to be a little bit more scientific with it, here's a look at some average last frost dates observed around a good portion of the Maritime region. And you can see that as we move towards mid-to-late May, the risk of frost really decreases for a lot of areas. So it is still there into early June for northern and central areas of New Brunswick, and interior areas of the north and east of Nova Scotia. And remember, these are average dates of last frost, which means on plenty of years there have been occurrences of frost after those dates. But it's one of the reasons why that June full moon rule is generally a pretty good one for the Maritimes. So, for any of the gardeners out there, anybody who's got things going in the early season, if you can, cover up and protect your plants tonight, it would be a good night to do so. Today's weather conditions around the Maritimes, mostly a mix of sun and cloud. Temperatures are down compared to the first part of this week. Most of the highs today will be topping out out around the low to mid-teens. So, just be a few clouds around as we move into and through Thursday evening. And then looking at mainly clear conditions during the night. And there is those cooler low temperatures falling down towards the low to mid single digits.

[00:02:26]In the forecast for Friday around the Maritimes, an area of high pressure in place. It is going to be mostly sunny.

[00:02:32]High temperatures will be similar to today, maybe up by a few degrees in some areas. Parts of the west of New Brunswick, for example. Parts of western Nova Scotia. So, a lot of highs around the mid to high teens. Remaining a little bit cooler around Prince Edward Island and eastern areas of Nova Scotia.
