Successful atemoya fruit set requires strategic pollination timing (late afternoon around 6 PM when flowers transition from female to male), with warm consistent weather improving fruit set rates from 30% to 80%, and growers should pollinate all flowers to maintain options for aborting deformed fruits or extending harvest timing.

Atemoya - Fruit set - May 2026Added:
Hey guys, and welcome back. So, today an update to my atemoyas. Um it is a mid a little bit past mid-May here in Socal, and the weather has been warm for quite some time. So, um the uh Uh for this year, the buds they came out a little bit early. So, I have I've been pollinating these um these trees here for I I guess for the past few weeks already, and uh and they're they're getting tall.
They're getting taller. So, I need this step and stool here to get up there to uh pollinate.
And what I've noticed is that for the first, you know, maybe for the first batch that I pollinated, maybe I would say maybe 30% set. But now recently, everything seemed to set uh because I think the weather is uh is is is maybe is it's more consistently warmer, and then uh I think the tree maybe is more familiar with with this time of the the year. So, here this is something that I've pollinated maybe maybe for the past 2 weeks, um 2 2 and 1/2 weeks, and as you can see, it's it's getting big.
Uh maybe not quite pinky size yet, but uh it's it's getting there.
Uh some more right here.
And and for this season here, it's a little bit too early for me, so I'm pollinating everything every single every single flower that I can get my um that I can get my hands on uh so that, you know, so that if any of the um so so that, you know, I will have the options to abort, you know, what I don't like, uh deformed fruits, or if I or if I feel like, you know, I want to keep the fruit on there a little bit longer to get to uh Lunar New Year, then um I can um I can abort the fruits that I pollinated, you know, early in the season, and then, you know, keep the one that I pollinate late in the season to to extend the season. So, here these guys here are probably the first batch that I've pollinated. And um And this season is this, you know, things I have a lot of buds this season.
Right there, right there. So, I See, let me see. This one did not set, I don't think. Yep. So, this did not set.
So, this year the the this the the the rate at which it sets, I would say maybe in about like 80% uh 80%. So, it's a pretty good year.
Uh right there.
Here in SoCal.
So, I have a lot. So, right there.
Right there. So, I'm pollinating everything. I'm pollinating everything.
And as you can see here, I do have a uh a female flower here that is going to be pollinated later later this later today. Uh but this season, I'm not sure why, but um it's not until late in the day is when I'm able to pollinate. Uh that's when I have both male and females uh flowers present. Um For the past maybe the past uh few years or a couple years, I used to pollinate them in the morning. Uh but now it's late in the day around 6:00 p.m. here.
Even at 5:00 p.m. Um the flower has not transitioned yet. So, here this one here was pollinated uh something like this here was pollinated last night or I'm sorry. Yeah, last night. So, this thing here is going to turn in uh the the male parts are going to be activated uh late in the day around 6:00 uh around 6:00 p.m. And then I'm going to I'm going to collect the the pollen from this from this flower here uh even though it may have already been uh pollinated, but the male pollen are going to be activated later tonight. So, I'll take that and then go and pollinate female flowers. Let me see.
That that, you know, something like this here might open later tonight.
Like this. You can already see that it's somewhat a little bit open, but So, then I'll take that pollen and pollinate that. As you can see, I I do have two two fruits right there, but I will only keep one because that's too much together, but I'll pick the better looking one.
So, that's the benefit of you know setting a lot of fruits. You have options. Let me see. I saw something interesting earlier. I'm going to show you guys both.
Let me see if I can find it.
But I was going to show you guys one Let me see.
Let me go up here.
Let me see.
So, some of the flowers I also missed. I didn't have pollen or I just missed completely because the trees didn't make it. So, something something like this this I didn't mark it that I pollinated this, so this is probably a a flower that was not pollinated. So, this one will probably just fall off later, but up here you know, oops.
So, right there I can pollinate a lot of buds up here too. So, lots and lots of fruit this season, but I will probably abort abort you know, maybe a third of them because the this tree here Let me see.
So, this tree here, this is my Gaffner with a few different varieties on there, other varieties. So, this tree is looking good. It's it's a good size.
It's not too big that I can't get all the way up there. But, I think this tree can probably comfortably hold maybe 30 fruits.
Uh, and right now I probably have more than 30 set on there. So, I will have to uh abort it.
Abort what I don't like. And uh for uh let's see, and for for Gaffners, it it there's a higher chance that the the fruit is a little bit deformed. So, it's good to have uh to have more pollinated. And here, this one right here, let me see. Let me get up there. Hold on.
I think that's what I'm that's what I was trying to sh- show you guys.
Hold on.
So, so right here, this is definitely something I've I've missed it. Uh, I missed uh pollinating or it opened this morning, but I didn't have pollen to pollinate because something like that right there, I would I pollinated last night. So, that thing is not going to turn uh the male part and I'm not going to be activated until later tonight. So, if this thing stays in that, you know, in this stage here, female, and then that turns to male later tonight, then I can use that to pollinate this. And then I just keep going. And then and then tomorrow, this is going to turn into male. And then I'll use that pollen to keep pollinating other other females flowers.
So, here's another one I missed.
This one here, I just didn't have uh I didn't have pollen.
So, but I do have a lot set already up there, right here, and then right here. And uh last season, I did not have a lot down here, but this season I do.
Right there, set.
Uh set.
Looking good. This is my uh This is my AP, African Pride. And uh I I grafted some PPC, but it's not coming out. But the scion is still alive uh because I scraped the skin and it's still green.
So, I'm just waiting for for the new growth to come out. I'm not sure when it's going to come out.
But uh regardless, more buds this season.
This one here will probably open tonight. You can already see that it's somewhat starting to open. You can see the the crevice between the two petals.
Some more.
And this guy here will probably open tonight.
Same thing. You can see that it's already starting to open.
Very excited.
Right here, this guy was pollinated maybe a couple of days ago.
The outside is dry and you can see the fruit right there. I'm not sure why can't focus right there.
But um one more tree. My um uh my Lindstrom. Uh this guy's very stingy with buds.
I'm not sure why and it's very hard to set.
Um it uh for this season here, it gave me maybe I think uh this is it. And then one more on the other branch, but then I tried to pollinate that and it did not stick. Um so here, this one was pollinated.
But I'm not sure if that uh if that uh took or not. So, I have three more chances here. So, four chances.
Four more chances to get a Lindstrom this season. But my uh let me see.
My This is a grafted branch. This is my uh Lisa and it's uh I think it's set. This one's set.
Right there.
It's still hard.
And then uh let's see.
And then this is my PPC. There was one bud down here, but uh it did not set. Uh same as last season, it didn't did not set. So, I have one last chance.
PPC right there. Hopefully this thing will get big and uh and mature. And then I have I'm not sure what this this variety is, but I have buds right there. So, this thing here looks like it's going to open tonight, too, as well.
Let's see.
Right there. You can see that it's it should open tonight. So, I will definitely pollinate this and hopefully it will set because this is this variety, I'm not sure what it is.
All right, guys.
That's my update.
Beautiful trees now. Uh I think this at this stage here it looks this looks beautiful because it's not bushy yet. I think as the season progresses, you know, the tree is going to get more bushies and it doesn't look as good.
>> [laughter] >> And then you know, it's get it gets too big.
But uh the trunk is doing great.
Big.
2 2 and 1/2 inches.
It's still flimsy, though. So, I have to I have to tie it uh to the house here.
And this guy, too, uh later in the season when the fruits um gets bigger and then you know, it it sag and then I got to tie it up.
All right, guys. That's my yard atemoyas mid uh mid-May here in SoCal.
Things are looking good.
All right.
Have a good day, guys.
