By reframing Revelation through the lens of literary genre, the authors successfully rescue the text from the pitfalls of modern sensationalism. It is a refreshing and intellectually grounded reminder that context must always precede interpretation.

Reading Revelation Like Romeo & Juliet
Added:How is Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet like the book of Revelation from the Bible? Well, in the play, Shakespeare tells us right up front this is a tragedy. It's a tale of woe.
Star-crossed lovers are going to take their life. But, what if you ignored all that and watched the play for [music] advice on how to have a healthy romantic relationship? You would be misunderstanding the play and it could lead to disastrous personal consequences. But, here's the thing. The book of Revelation gives us an introduction, too. [music] It tells us how we're supposed to read the book. The author says, "This is a revelation, an apocalypse. It's prophetic and also it's a specific letter written at a specific time." When we read the book of Revelation and we ignore all that thinking that it's some sort of cosmic future telling of things that only directly apply to us, it's just like watching Romeo and Juliet looking for love advice. If you want to learn more about the genres of Revelation and how we're actually supposed to read the book, check out our long-form video.
