Did America cause Britain to Colonize India?

[00:00:00]In our history, Britain's involvement in India is often described as compensation imperialism, or the idea that after the humiliating loss of the 13 colonies in 1783, Britain psychologically and materially replaced America with India.

[00:00:19]It's a bit more complicated than that though. [music] British trade interests, and more importantly their trade deficit in Asia, always made India an incredibly desirable colony. The disintegration of the Mughal Empire in the 1700s also already created a power vacuum that invited European intervention.

[00:00:35]Furthermore, the Battle of Plassey in 1757, nearly 20 years before the American Revolution even broke out, had already transformed the British East India Company from a trading company into something approaching a military state in miniature. Once Bengal had been secured, the land revenue of one of the most productive regions in Asia was already flowing into company coffers.

[00:00:56]However, Britain still faced a trade deficit with Asia because India, and more so China, didn't particularly want British manufactured goods. They wanted silver, but the Spanish controlled silver mining in South America. So, the conquest of Bengal gave the East India Company the first step on its way around that problem. By establishing the precedent to use Indian land revenue to buy Indian goods, and eventually to use opium grown in India and Afghanistan as a substitute for silver in the China trade.
