Psychological tests serve distinct purposes across different branches of psychology: in educational settings, they are used for screening, placement, selection, and identifying learning disabilities; in clinical psychology, they diagnose disorders and monitor treatment effectiveness; in counseling and guidance, they support personal growth and career decisions; in developmental psychology, they track cognitive, social, and emotional development; and in industrial and organizational psychology, they assess employee selection, personality, and organizational climate.

Lecture 4: Role of Assessment in Different Branches of PsychologyAdded:
Hello learners, welcome back to the course on psychological assessment in applied setting. This is module one lecture 4 in which we shall be seeing how psych psychological tests are used in different branches of psychology. So the title of the lecture is role of psychological tests in different branches of psychology. Psychological tests are used in a variety of settings.
As you all are already aware, psychology has multiple branches like clinical psychology, school psychology, organizational and industrial psychology and so on. And the use of tests or different psychological assessment devices is done in almost every setting wherever psychology is applied. In this lecture we shall be seeing in what all areas are tests used and for what all purpose. So if we take an overview, psychological tests are used in educational settings, clinical settings, counseling and guidance settings, developmental and child psychology and in industrial and organizational psychology. Firstly, we'll take a look at what are the uses of psychological tests in educational settings. So if we talk about educational settings, both school counselors or school psychologists and the educators that is the teachers who are dealing with students on a day-to-day basis may make use of different psychological tests to better understand the students and also to better get an understanding of the uh course or curriculum they are teaching and its effectiveness.
So if we talk about application of psychological tests in educational settings, it may be used for screening, placement and selection of students across grade levels from kindergarten up till higher education. So basically psychological tests are used for various purposes. As we've already seen in the previous lecture that the goals of testing can be multiffold. So in educational settings primarily tests are used for screening purpose for placement and for selection of students. Sometimes educators may want to screen the students that they admit into their institutions. Uh many a times there are institutions that are meant for extremely u uh highly uh qualified individuals who may uh have an aptitude a high aptitude for the uh skill that is being that they are providing training in. [snorts] For that purpose, we may you need to use different psychological tests to identify those students who pass the basic criteria whom we can screen as uh meeting the uh requirements that are there for a particular educational program. It may also be used for placement purposes. That is students may be placed into different type of programs or different grades based on education based on psychological assessment procedures. So for example, a teacher may conduct a standardized achievement test uh before uh the beginning of a grade year uh to see which students need to be placed in remedial classes, which students need to be placed in advanced classes. that will tell them what is their achievement level up to what level have they gained knowledge and on that basis they can place students into let's say remedial classes so that along with the uh normal uh day-to-day curriculum that they are being taught of the specific grade that they are in they can also get or catch up on the uh content of perhaps the previous grade that they may have not understood very well. Uh psychological tests may also be used to select students. So if for example uh a sports teacher is uh starting a team or or is uh developing or creating a team of uh uh students who will take part in different sorts of sports and represent the school in different competitions. In that case, the sports teacher may do an aptitude test for different sports in order to see who are the more athletic students and select them accordingly.
Assessment of academic achievement to identify strengths and weaknesses [snorts] uh among students may also be done. So sometimes we also want to understand what are the strong points of students and where are the students falling short or falling weak. For that purpose also using standardized psychological tests is a much more recommended procedure as if teachers or academicians base their judgment.
However, if we use psychological tests to identify strengths and weaknesses of students, we can be sure that the te that the results are reliable. We can also use psychological tests for evaluation of potential through aptitude tests for predicting future performance.
So uh the tests can also be used to understand what is the potential or the uh uh the ability that is present in the student that may be used to better allocate or guide the student in taking up a field or a branch of education that they are more likely to excel in. Just imagine if a student uh who has no science scientific uh aptitude uh goes in for uh their higher education in engineering. They somehow get by it.
They somehow pass the their engineering exams. They go on to become an engineer.
And over there when they have to actually apply the principles that were taught in the engineering program they are unable to do so do do so. That will be problematic for both the company that they're working for because they would not be able to be as productive as another individual who might have been selected who had better potential and better understanding of that uh area.
And also for the individual themselves, this would be a highly dissatisfying job or career choice because [gasps] they will always find themselves falling short of uh the required abilities or skill set. That is why in order to identify the aptitude or the potential of students from a very early age uh maybe in the primary schooling or after their seventh or eighth grade when we see that students or uh adolescents start to show leaning towards one particular or a few particular areas of uh uh uh working or education.
In that point if we conduct aptitude tests, interest tests and other tests which can predict in which area or which field the student is most likely to excel then that could save both money, time and effort of both the society and the individual. Educational settings also use psychological tests to identify learning disabilities or aid for remedial programs. Psychological tests are also used in educational settings to identify learning disabilities or the need for remedial programs. So it is very important again to identify if a student might have some sort of a learning disability or might be neurode divergent in any form because even though nowadays the awareness regarding these psychological conditions is slowly and steadily spreading acceptance and recognition of these conditions is very uh rare. That is why it is important to use screening devices or tests, standardized tests that can exactly identify if a student has a learning disability, ADHD, dyslexia or autism or any sort of a condition that may interfere with their academic growth. If we fail to identify these students at an early age, even though there are uh effective procedures available to help students or help children dealing with learning disabilities, ADHD to uh continue with their education uh using some uh means of education or methods of education that help them gain the understanding keeping in mind their uh needs and their conditions. Uh even regardless of uh the existence of these methods, if students go unrecognized, they will suffer uh in terms of their academic growth. That is why if only we identify students at an early age, they can be facilitated so that their future academics do not suffer. Tests also help in tracking intellectual, cognitive and uh emotional progress over time. So it is also very important to keep a track of how the child or the student in the educational system is developing. Just because a child who was assessed using an intelligence test and was identified as having average intelligence at maybe age five is not necessary to have that same level of intelligence throughout their life. So attaching such labels to students that may have a lasting impressions is also very harmful to them. That is why continuous assessment and continuous testing using reliable methods is extremely important. So that if a student using experience and exposure has managed to elevate their intellectual ability to a higher level, they can be recognized and uh their future can be planned accordingly. Now let us take a look at some of the abilities and traits that are often uh measured in educational settings along with some examples of tests that are used in educational settings. So uh in educational settings uh we want to assess the academic knowledge and skills, learning potential and aptitude.
So how much knowledge has the student already gained? And once again uh one may think that uh the end semester exams or the annual exams that students are subjected to are good enough procedures to uh gain an understanding of their academic achievement. But using standardized procedures can provide us with results that can be applied in various settings where an annual exam score may not be applicable. If you uh see different boards tend to have different uh marking systems in for their students and because of which we cannot compare the uh same percentage received by a student perhaps in CBSC board with that of a student obtained by uh in ICSC board. [snorts] That is why using standardized achievement tests to get an understanding of one's academic knowledge can help us generalize these results across the board. Uh in uh tests can also be used to assess the cognitive abilities like verbal nonverbal including memory, reasoning, creativity and divergent thinking. So [snorts and clears throat] various sorts of cognitive abilities uh be it using language or be it without language can be recognized with the help of intelligence tests and also uh assessing the creativity or divergent thinking of a student can also provide uh insights into how the student may or may not deal with the problems that they face in life. A student who may be average in intelligence but may have a high degree of creativity could still excel in multiple fields where creativity is credited more than intellectual prowess.
If we look at some examples of tests used in educational settings uh for achievement we can use tests like the Iowa test of educational development, California achievement test. For aptitude, we use tests such as differential aptitude test or the general aptitude test battery GATB.
For intelligence, there is a whole host of tests that are available that can assess multiple intelligence, specific intelligence, general intelligence and all different factors of intelligence.
Some examples are uh the Wler intelligence scales including va whisk and wpppsi.
We also have Bhya battery of intelligence. We have the Stanford bin intelligence test and so on. For creativity, we can use the torrent tests of creativity uh along with the remote associates test. Some of these tests we will cover in detail in the following modules. Now, clinical psychologists use assessment to improve mental health and well-being.
Clinical psychology is one of the most recognized branches of psychology.
Mostly when you ask somebody what do psychologists do, they will describe the job of a clinical psychologist. That is to provide therapy to deal or treat uh psychological disorders. How would a psychologist however come to the conclusion whether or not an individual is suffering from a psychological disorder? There are multiple assessment means for that such as the clinical interview, observation, case history.
One of the most reliable and standardized procedures are psychological tests. Psychological tests can be used by clinical psychologists to both diagnose and to assess the effectiveness of treatment. So uh uh psychologists in the clinical setting can use tests to diagnose clin uh psychological disorders and different mental health conditions. There are several tests of anxiety, depression, stress, um even uh specific uh psychotic disorders such as delusions or schizophrenia which may provide a circumstantial diagnosis for um uh these disorders. Of course, no psychologists can base their diagnosis only on the basis of a psychological test. They need to corroborate the results with different assessment methods such as interviews and observations. However, psychological tests can provide a quick and standardized measures of arriving at diagnosis. It can also be used to monitor progress and effectiveness of treatment and therapy. So if a psychologist conducted a depression test on an individual before the treatment began and if they want to see if that treatment is effective or not, they can do so by conducting the same test on the individual after treatment. If the scores on the test have improved, the psychologist has good evidence to indicate that the uh treatment or the line of therapy that the psychologist chose is working for the individual.
Psychological tests can also be used to assess aspects of an individual that may influence mental health such as parent child interaction, social functioning or effect. So it is not that psychological disorders occur in isolation. They occur in context to the social, emotional and personal context of the individual. That is why many a times we may need to understand different aspects such as what is the role of parents in the life of an autistic child or what is the uh social emotional uh status of an individual with schizophrenia.
All of these things can aid the psychologist in tailoring the treatment to suit the specific conditions of the uh individual. If we find some positive aspects in the individual social or personal environment, the psychologist can use that to benefit them in treatment. It can also help in evaluation of personality traits, emotional adjustment and in coping skills. So again all of these factors show a correlation with different psychological disorders. Some personality types are more prone to getting some some types of psychological disorders and so on. And that is why psychi psychologists by understanding the personality variables, the coping styles of individuals can uh come uh up with treatment uh procedures that will be more beneficial to the individual.
Another important branch of clinical psychology is neurossychological assessment that is used to identify brain damage, cognitive deficits and recovery through neuroplasticity. So if we get patients of dementia, Alzheimer's or patients who have had a traumatic brain injury due to some accident, we can use neurosychological tests to exactly understand which area or which part of the brain has been damaged and to what extent has it been damaged.
Sometimes if one area of the brain is damaged due to neuroplasticity, another brain area may take over some of the function of the damaged brain area.
We can understand that only and only by conducting psychological tests that cannot even be understood through brain scans because brain scans will only show you the physical picture of an individual's brain. But how is the brain functioning will be understandable only through psychological tests. Let's look at some of the abilities and traits that are measured in clinical settings along with examples of tests. So psychological disorders are assessed through tests such as anxiety. So the Beck anxiety inventory is one of the tests that can be used for that. Beck depression inventory can be used to assess the level of depression. ADHD can be assessed by using the adult ADHD self-report scale and there are many other conditions such as autism, dementia for which specific tests exist that can be used to understand whether or not a person is suffering from that condition. Personality characteristics can be assessed through a variety of tests such as MMPI, ROS shark, uh thematic app perception tests and so on which we shall discuss much more in detail in future modules. Cognitive, motor, sensory and memory functionings can be understood using the neurosychological tests such as the holstered writen uh neurosy uh holstered writen neurosychological battery or the lura Nebraska uh neurosychological battery. emotional and social functioning of the individual can also aid clinical psychologists uh an understanding of that and the tests that can be used for these are tests such as the emotional maturity scale, Rosenswick, picture frustration tests and so on. Another area of psychology is counseling and guidance.
First let's understand how does clinical psychology differ from counseling and guidance field. So counseling majorly focuses on personal growth and stress management while clinical psychology primarily focuses on treating clinical disorders. So clinical psychology and the focus of it is largely to treat individuals who are at a dysfunction facing some sort of a dysfunction or uh poor mental health uh poor mental health. However, counseling can be provided even to individuals who have no psychological disorders but they only want to improve their mental health and well-being. So counseling focuses more towards the positive psychology.
Guidance is uh a sub field of counseling you can say which focuses on helping individuals uh choose educational and career paths as per their personality, interests and aptitude. So when we talk about counseling and guidance fields, psychological tests can be applied to facilitate personal and interpersonal functioning across life stages. So in order to understand exactly what aspects of an individual are um uh suffering or are causing uh dysfunction in an individual's life are causing sadness or distress in an individual's life, we can use psychological tests to understand that. Psychological tests can also help support career choices through assessment of interests and aptitude and different uh abilities.
Uh they can also help in identification of adjustment issues, emotional problems and stress level. They can also help psychologists evaluate job satisfaction, [snorts] quality of life and well-being. So in counseling settings, uh uh using tests can help improve the existing and future conditions of an individual.
>> [snorts] >> Uh if you get an employee who's working in a in an organization and they are constantly reporting a lot of stress, you may want to look at whether they are facing stress because they are not happy in their job or is it some personal reason in their uh private life which is leading to stress for which you can use different sorts of psychological tests to gain a better understanding.
>> [snorts] >> They can also assist in diagnosis and treatment planning. Although counseling and guidance Although counseling and guidance don't directly deal with treatment of psychological disorders but counselors can use tests such as intelligence tests and different personality tests to identify [snorts] if there is some intellectual or personality disorder in an individual which then can be referred to the clinical psychologist. If we look at some of the tests that are used in counseling and guidance uh settings to specifically assess certain abilities or traits, uh tests are used to assess interests, vocational preferences and career alignment. [snorts] Some examples of interest tests are strong vocational interest blank and in uh and educational interest record.
[snorts] Adjustment in various life domains uh can also be assessed using various u adjustment tools. Uh adjustment is to be seen in different areas of life such as home, school, social and emotional.
uh adjustment assessment questionnaire uh is one of the examples of an adjustment test. Stress is an emerging problem and is actually considered the biggest killer of the 21st century. That is why to assess stress is extremely important and as early as you can detect high stress or burnout the better it is for the mental health of the individual.
Anxiety tests are also important uh in clinical counseling settings along with depression tests. Uh assessing coping strategies can also provide a hint to the psychologist as to where the problem is. Sometimes people don't face very high stress but because of dysfunctional coping strategies that they have been using even the slightest of stress becomes a very big problem in their life. That is why identifying coping strategies is also important. The homes and rahee stress scale is an example of a stress test.
>> [snorts] >> Medical outcome study short form 36 is also an important tool that can be used by counselors. Uh interpersonal relationships and social functioning is also important to be assessed in counseling and guidance settings.
Another important branch of psychology is developmental or child psychology.
This focuses on the scientific study of how uh how and when humans change and grow across their entire lifespan. So child psychology focuses on development of young children up till adolescence.
But recently it has also been seen that development that takes place during adulthood is also extremely important to be recognized and that can have important uh uh influences on the individual's psyche. [snorts] If we look at some of the uses of tests in developmental or child uh set child psychology settings, uh it is important to use test to track cognitive, social, emotional and physical development in children and adolescence. So development during the early years is extremely important as it not only uh marks how the child is developing at that point but also lays the foundation for future development. So if uh development is or stunted at a young age, the child loses out on important time uh in their developmental lifespan where they could have uh developed specific skills or abilities. That is why it is important to track the different aspects of development such as cognitive or intellectual development, social, emotional development and physical development. uh when we talk about uh developmental psychology, [snorts] it is also important to identify developmental delays or age appropriate milestones.
Now there are some milestones that are to be reached by a specific age such as at what time does the child start to walk, start to say their first word, u start to lift their head, gets uh uh strength in their uh arms and fine motor abilities. All of those things occur at specific stages and ages. And it is extremely important to track whether or not a child is meeting their milestones at the right age because if there is delay in the uh reach in reaching milestones that could be indicative of either uh intellectual or some sort of physical uh disability. Intellectual [snorts] abilities are also important to be assessed in order to see what type of schooling and whath mode of schooling the child should receive. Uh it is important to assess skills such as problem solving, memory and learning potential to identify the specific problem areas or strengths of a child.
uh psychological tests also help evaluate social maturity, emotional regulation and adaptive behavior in children and adults. So uh to understand the development we also need to understand different factors that may affect development of an individual such as their emotional adjustment, their social environment and all of those things. It also informs educational planning and early interventions. So if we uh keep a track of the development of a child and even an adult or an adolescent uh time to time we can identify uh what are the problems as they occur and using early intervention and treatment at the right time many of the effects of these problems can be uh can be uh dealt with or can be prevented from happening. ing. Now let's look at some of the abilities and tests that are uh abilities and traits that are assessed in developmental psychology and some of the examples of their tests. So general intelligence is a very important aspect that is often measured in children uh including their verbal and performance skills both uh different aspects that contribute to general intelligence such as working memory, processing speed, perceptual reasoning are uh assessed using different intelligence tests. Social maturity and emotional development is also an important aspect that is often taken into account when uh uh assessing the development of a child. Eye, hand coordination, visual perception and cognitive skills are also uh uh of interest to developmental psychologists.
Some of the tests that we often use in these settings include the Wler intelligence scales. Uh Mullins's intelligence scale for Indian children.
This is an intelligence test that has been developed primarily for Indian children. Sanguin forboard test is a performance test of intelligence. So it can be used with very young children as well. The wineman social maturity scale is a test that tracks the social development and social milestones of a child. Developmental screening test is a test that covers various areas such as physical, cognitive and social development of children and it is very useful in tracking the milestones of children. Now, [snorts] industrial and organizational psychology is a branch that applies psychological principles to the workplace. Different concepts of psychology such as stress, motivation, personality are very important to ensure smooth functioning of an organization and happy and satisfied employees.
uh when we talk about applications of tests in IO psychology or in industrial and organizational branch uh we use test for employee selection and placement based on fit between the person and the job characteristics. So uh it is very important to uh uh appoint the right person for the right job and that is for which we need to use psychological test to be able to tell us what are the characteristics of the job. What are the type of abilities required by the job and whether or not the person whom we are selecting for that job possesses those abilities or not. It is also used in assessment of personality, temperament and emotional intelligence for workplace performance. uh performance or productivity of an employee not only depends on the ability or skill set or how expert that individual is but also on whether they are uh the right personality type for that job, whether they have the emotional maturity required by that job, whether they have the communication skills required by that job. And for all of that we can use different psychological tests to understand that evaluation of organizational environment and group dynamics is also of interest to psychologist. We also need to see the other side of the coin where we evaluate the organizational climate and culture to understand whether it is conducive to its employees or not. If all employees are dissatisfied, it is very likely that the problem is not within the employees but within the organizational environment. [snorts] Job analysis can also be used to identify required skills, critical incidents and work uh activities that are uh required by a particular job.
Measurement of perceived personal environment fit to predict job satisfaction, retention and organizational citizenship is also important because if the right person is not put in the right environment or the right job then it is more likely that this person will quit, be dissatisfied or will be at work but would be unproductive or unparticipating. That is why psychological tests are also to be used for this purpose. Let's look at some of the abilities and traits that are measured along with examples in organizational and industrial settings.
Aptitude is uh one of the abilities that is uh to be seen because if we choose a person who does not have the potential for that particular skill, no matter how much training you provide them, they will not excel and be productive in that area. Intelligence and specialized skills such as clerical, mechanical or artistic uh abilities are also to be recognized before hiring or promoting a person into a specific role. Uh for this purpose the differential aptitude test, general aptitude test batteries can be used. Personality tests, [snorts] personality traits, communication styles uh are also of interest to uh organizational psychologist. The Myerbriggs type indicator uh is one of the most popular tests of personality in organizational settings.
Leadership potential and emotional intelligence and self-efficacy are also important variables that uh contribute greatly to uh the smooth functioning of the organization.
uh job satisfaction, motivation and group dynamics are also important organizational factors that are to be assessed and kept a check on in order to ensure that the employees are happy and satisfied. For this purpose, the assessment of organizational climate and culture is very important. uh tests such as the work environment scale or the group environment scale, p perceived person environment fit scale can all be used to assess the different aspects of the organization.
[snorts] With that we gain an understanding on the role of psychological tests in different branches of psychology. Hope this has helped you. Thank you so much.
