The SS Salvador was a coal-carrying ship that connected Seattle's coal mines to San Francisco markets before the Panama Canal opened; once the canal provided a more efficient route, these coastal shipping routes became obsolete, marking the end of Seattle's era as a major coal-exporting hub.

Why did a random ship name change Seattle's history forever?Added:
the SS Salvador over here. It seems like a weird name for for a ship serving Seattle, but before uh there was the the Panama Canal, there would be a railroad that would go from the east side of Panama over to the west side of Panama and uh would then meet the SS Salvador and and ships like that and uh they would come up to San Francisco. So once they made that connection, they didn't need these ships anymore.
