The vagus nerve, named for its Latin meaning 'wanderer' as it extends throughout the body from the brain to vital organs like the heart, lungs, and digestive system, is the longest single peripheral nerve in the human body and serves as the primary parasympathetic nerve responsible for the 'rest, digest, and repair' functions that slow heart rate, reduce blood pressure, stimulate digestion, and enable nighttime bodily repair.

The Vagus Nerve: Your Body's Wandering Master #shortsAñadido:
What is the vagus nerve? Well, it's called the Vegas nerve because vagus in Latin means wanderer and it wanders all over the body. You can see it here going from the brain through the neck. It's going to the heart and lungs. It's going to the the spleen. It's connecting into the GI tract all the way down here. So, it's really the longest single nerve outside well longest single peripheral nerve in the body. And in some ways, you could say it it may be even longer than the spinal cord itself. So, it's this really long nerve that connects a lot of stuff in your body. And we're still finding out all the different things it connects and all the different functions that it has. So, this is the most well-known vagus nerve function, what we were taught in medical school way back when, that it's parasympathetic control.
It's rest, digest, and repair. It slows the heart rate. It reduces the blood pressure. It stimulates digestive tract activity and reboots the system for repair. And that's because most of the repair that you get happens at night.
So, uh, makes sense, right? You activate your vag nerve. You start getting sleepy. Your heart rate slows, reduces blood pressure, stimulates the digestive tract to digest your dinner, and then it sort of allows you to get into that repair mode at night. And these are also wellknown vagus nerve functions.
