Crisis Beneath the Crisis: When the Faithful Can't Recognize the Pope

[00:00:00]would you say to those who are really hurting in the confusion cuz there's a lot. I actually have a really strange one cuz I was at a meeting just a couple weeks ago. There was a guy who um believed in the church, wasn't Catholic yet, um but was hoping to enter, but uh basically said he couldn't sign up to Leo.

[00:00:24]And well, he said I couldn't sign up to the Pope and I was like, "Oh, the papacy, that's an easy thing to explain." He said, "No, no, no, no, no."

[00:00:32]>> [laughter] >> He believed in the previous Popes, but he just couldn't sign up to what's going on right now cuz he believes the traditional teachings of the church.

[00:00:40]And that puts you at a weird kind of a space to be able to answer him. How do you How does he make a profession of faith in a time where it seems like the man on the throne seems to be going in the other direction. That's a tough one, too, because well, the easy answer is I think the wrong answer. And the easy answer is, well, there was Benedict the 10th or 9th, whichever one it was the pornocracy Benedict was the most infamous Pope in history if you are if you know anything about church history. And you know, and all these other bad and allegedly bad Popes from history, but that's the wrong answer because if you look at those men, they were just grotesque sinners.

[00:01:19]You know, secretly fathering children, some of them probably closeted homosexuals, some of them just bad guys.

[00:01:25]But what they never did was promote heresy.

[00:01:29]History doesn't look kindly upon Pope Alexander the 6th, but if you actually look at some of his Marian writings, you kind of wonder why we don't have those today.

[00:01:37]And that was him, right?

[00:01:39]And that's kind of the common thread with most of these bad Popes in history is that they didn't undermine the faith.

[00:01:45]And what's keeping that person you spoke out of spoke to out of the church almost certainly is their blatant public contradictions of the faith. It's hard to square the Marian document released by Cardinal Fernandez with with the Pope's blessing with the church's history.

[00:02:00]It's just you can't do it. It's hard to to square Fiducia Supplicans and Amoris Laetitia which Leo positively invoked Fiducia Supplicans recently and the bishops are going to celebrate a 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia later this year. It's hard to square all that and I don't know exactly how to address that other than starting to get into some of the potentially not fringe but more radical interpretations of what's going on.

[00:02:26]I don't I haven't endorsed the, you know, what they call the Benny Plenus position. I find it an interesting position.

[00:02:34]I'm open to the possibility that Benedict was the last Pope at least last for now. I I'm not a sedevacantist but those are all for clearly compelling positions for a lot of people.

[00:02:47]How often do you see in your own comment section people saying that's it, I'm going to become sedevacantist now? I mean, I see it.

[00:02:52]>> It does just happen with that order as well. Just the or transalpine monks Redemptorists, yeah. decided to they just You know, and this this is the thing. I I wonder if this isn't down to the refusal of the cardinals to speak up and clarify because they're just not. That for me is even more stunning than that might sound weird but at this point I'm used to a Francis, a now a Leo.

[00:03:23]What I'm not used to is this this this absolute silence in the face of just horror.
