Effective horror films create fear through unpredictability and psychological tension rather than relying solely on jump scares; the movie 'Obsession' demonstrates this by establishing relatable characters first, then introducing supernatural elements that make viewers uncertain about what will happen next, creating sustained anxiety throughout the viewing experience.

I need to talk about this movieHinzugefügt:
I want to talk about obsession. I know this is a mythology channel, but you could make the argument that, you know, Making a Wish is in a lot of mythical I want to talk about Obsession. Damn it.
Like, jeez, I need to talk about it because that movie, Damn, man. Here's the thing. I really love the idea of a great horror movie. And the reason I say idea is because it is so hard to find a good horror movie, man. And there are so many times when people like recommend one to me or tell me, "Oh, this one's amazing. You should check this one out.
This one will scare the pants off of you." And I go see it and it just doesn't work for me. I don't know. Maybe I'm overly picky or something, but there's like it's it takes a lot for me to actually get scared at a horror film.
Like, and I'm not saying that to brag. I actually hate that because I I don't like not being scared at a horror film.
I want to be scared. I want it I want to be uncomfortable. That's what horror is for, right? Like, send help. People were glazing the crap out of that. A friend of mine recommended it to me. I saw it.
I didn't like it. I'm sorry. I I liked the opening. I liked the premise. I was like, "Oh, this is going to be great."
And then it really let me down. I just I didn't enjoy it. Um, Sinners, that's not even a horror movie. Stop calling it one. It's not even trying to be scary.
Look, there's very good things about it.
I'm not calling it a trash movie, but it was marketed as like this deeply disturbing horror film, and that I'm sorry, that's not what it was. Like, why is why was everyone saying it was going to be that? So disappointing. Um, Long Legs. I was so excited for Long Legs.
Nicholas Cage horror film. Yes. It didn't scare me. It I didn't find it scary. Like, I found again the opening I found unsettling. I was like, "Oh, cool.
Where's this going to go?" and the reveal really let me down and a lot of other stuff about it really let me down.
Uh, weapons was okay. It had maybe two or three scary moments tops, but I that's kind of it. So, you you get the point I'm making. Like, I go see all these films, they don't really scare me.
I end up kind of disappointed and I don't get the feeling I'm going for when I watch them. This movie scared me. This movie legitimately scared me and made me uncomfortable and unsettled. I spent the entire second half of this film on edge.
I'm not kidding. The whole second half of this film I was like, "Okay, what what the [ __ ] is GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?" LIKE, that was me throughout so much of the film. My girlfriend Wilder was also scared very much during the film. In fact, um funny uh little tidbit here. She was gripping my hand with both of her hands very tightly throughout most of the film and she was holding it like here very close to her mouth and I was legitimately worried there was going to be like a jump scare or something and she was going to accidentally bite my hand or something like that. So I had a little extra layer of fear for that which I guess isn't going to be the norm for you guys but you know it it added to the movie experience for me.
So yeah, um I'm going to try to do non-spoilers and then I'll talk about spoilers later, but this movie has such a simple premise when you think about it. And they do so much with it. I I'm very glad I knew very little going in. I didn't see any of the trailers. I actually didn't even hear about the movie until uh Moyes Critical recommended it in one of his videos. I I watch a lot of Moyes Critical and he was, you know, glazing it, calling it his movie of the year. And there have been times I haven't even agreed with Moisty Critical, but I was like, "All right, you know, you kind of I guess I'll give it a shot. Go see how it is."
Um, like I didn't even watch his full video. Like he glazed it for a couple minutes. I was like, "All right, I'll turn this off to avoid spoilers." And hey WA, you want to go see this Obsession movie? People are saying it's good. And we go see it. And yeah, it's good. It's pretty goddamn great.
Honestly, it feels so good to agree with the hype of a movie. It feels so good when a movie lives up to the hype. I don't like being a negative [ __ ] Nancy. I love that I get to just ride this love train with everybody else.
But yeah, like I said, relatively simple premise and they do a ton with it. Uh, if you know anything about this movie, you probably know the basic premise is a guy makes a wish for his crush to fall in love with him. And, uh, it works.
And, uh, she basically goes all the way with just being infatuated with him and obsessed with him as the title would suggest.
And yeah, it's a premise that's been done a lot of times. um you know it but it's done so well in this like I I remember I think the first time I ever saw this premise used was there's this episode of the Twilight Zone where this weirdo buys like a love potion from somebody and then like towards the end it kind of gets really weird like he almost kills her or something but um it really reminded me of and and I think this like I wouldn't be surprised if other people make this same connection.
But it reminded me of that one scene from Wish Upon where the one of the characters does like basically the same thing and then the dude goes crazy. I feel like the creator of this movie saw that scene and went, I can make this good like or something like that. Um, yeah, actually movie, this movie is made by uh like internet sketch comedian Curry Barker. And I didn't know that going in, but I I was amazed to find that out because I've seen Curry Barker before. I've seen some of his sketches. He's made me laugh several times. Um, like my favorite is uh he's got this sketch like Why Do You Want Me to Come? It's really really funny. Again, very simple premise and does a lot with it. Uh but um uh he's got his friend who does the sketches with him in the movie as one of the main characters. And the second I saw him, I was like, I know this guy from somewhere. Where what movies have I seen him? And I was having the wrong thoughts. I shouldn't have been thinking movies. I should have been thinking sketches. Anyway, I'm I'm detracting way too much. Um basically, the movie is extremely unsettling because you never know what the [ __ ] this girl's going to do. And they do a really good job of setting up, first of all, they do a great job of setting up the characters beforehand. I feel like I had the basic idea of who they were. They also felt like people I would hang out with. Like the girl was like a cool person. The friends seemed like fun people to be around. Like, and you know, they were all like casually roasting each other and stuff, which is something me and my friends do all the time. Like, you know, the girl was one of those typical friends who likes to bully her male friends a little. Like, uh, I have friends like that. And you know, it they also do a really good job of establishing like, let me put it this way, I kind of felt like if the main character had just asked the girl out, there could have been something there. Like he didn't even need to do what he did, but he did.
And then the movie does a really good job of establishing like both that he's getting what he wants out of this, but then suddenly showing that it's there's something terribly wrong going on and that this character is now like the female character is both predictable and unpredictable. Like you know she's going to do something but you don't know what the [ __ ] she's going to do. Plus, there are also a lot of scenes where you think she's going to do something, but she doesn't. So, like, you know, there's one scene in this movie that some people have said is a little overly predictable, but I would disagree. Even though I was sitting there thinking, "Oh my god, something's going to happen. You're going to burst through that, aren't you? Something's going to happen right now." But there had been previous scenes where where I had been sitting there thinking, "Is something going to happen? What's going to happen?" And nothing did happen. So, I think the movie does a good job of like you not knowing 100% if the jump scare is coming. And there were times when I didn't know something was going to happen and it [ __ ] did. It's just um you know, I really really like I said, it was so unpredictable and I didn't know what was going to happen and I but I knew something was going to it's hard I I just realized I'm completely repeating myself and I'm sorry. It's just hard to describe without spoilers just the way this movie made me feel.
But I guess the best way to say it is just yeah, I was on edge. I was worried.
I was fearful for the characters. I even like, you know, I was very invested most of all in the the girl, the love interest, and I felt, you know, terrible for her for what was going on with her.
I'll get more into that in spoilers. By the way, this actress freaking incredible performance. If she doesn't get nominated for something, I'm going to be really annoyed. I know the Academy doesn't nominate horror movies for [ __ ] but come on. You got to do this one. You got at least nominate her for something.
She was freaking phenomenal.
And yeah, it's well acted by everyone.
Like I said, I was invested in all the characters, but the girl specifically, I wish I knew the actress's name, but I didn't look it up beforehand. Sorry about that. And by the way, apparently they even had to cut stuff out of this movie to avoid an NC17 rating. Release the uncut version, please, like on DVD or something. I'll buy that. I will buy that. I've been thinking about buying this movie. And if you're going to release an NC17 version, I will buy the [ __ ] out of that. Again, a horror movie should scare you. It should freak you out. I never like when it's like, you can't put that in a horror movie.
That's distasteful.
Univilized. That's too much. I I always hate when it's like, "No, no, this is too much blood. You're going to have to have about 10% less blood." That's stupid crap logic like that is always ridiculous.
Oh boy. And uh yeah, but um I feel like I should just get to spoilers because I don't know how else to describe this movie without spoilers. But very good movie. Like I only have like two little nitpicks about it. Oh, here's one thing I can say without spoiling too much. The movie does rely a lot on loud noises. It's a very loud movie at times. That's one of the things that makes the audience jump, but it never, in my opinion, anyways, some people might disagree with me. It never felt like cheap jump scares when it relied on loud noises. And I think a part of that is because like they didn't just start like playing noise that felt like it came out of nowhere. Something I noticed is maybe I'm wrong. I'm not I'm not an expert on music, but it felt like the music the movie has a very good score by the way. The music really sets the tone.
It felt like when the when [ __ ] Got Loud, it was just the music that was already playing suddenly like going up, you know?
in order to again portray that something really bad is suddenly happening or something crazy. It almost felt like the music was kind of reflecting what like the girl like what was going on with her and like it was just swelling when she was swelling or something like that. So that's why it didn't feel cheap to me though was saying like you know there were times when I think the movie just yelled at me to make me scared. So, some people might disagree with me on that, but that is a little nitpick. So, it's one of the reasons I don't think I'd give the movie a 10 out of 10. There's one other reason, but it's 100% a spoiler, so I'll talk about it in spoilers. I'd give this movie a 9 out of 10. I loved it. I legitimately loved it. I got what I wanted out of it. I was my expectations were exceeded and I'm very happy to have enjoyed it that much, and that's why I really wanted to talk about it. Just like really legitimately very good.
Okay, let's talk about spoilers. 3, two, one. So, one thing that makes this movie kind of funny and very unique is is just the way this world works. I swear [ __ ] just goes into one of those uh, you know, stupid crystal stores and just buys a little like stappy stick that grants wishes for you. And it's not like one of a kind or like $1,000. It's a [ __ ] like $7 toy. And they're just like, "Yeah, we got some right there if you want to take it." We have gotten complaints though. Oh, some people make wishes and then they're not happy about it. This is this is just a thing. This is just a thing going on in this world.
And later when the character comes back, he's like, "Why are you selling these?"
And the employees like, "Hey man, there's warnings on the back. Did you not think your wish through?" HE'S TALKING ABOUT IT LIKE IT'S JUST A REGULAR ASS PRODUCT. And I'm I'm pretty sure I have a theory. I have a theory that originally this movie was just a sketch of that scene. It was just a sketch that's that literally just starts with a dude walking into a store like like this wish that you sold me have [ __ ] up and the guy just acts like it it's a regular product. I'm pretty sure that's how it started in Curry Parker's head cuz he's a sketch comedian, you know? It's probably something like that.
I I'd be very amused to find out I was right about that. Um, but yeah, so that's how he gets the damn thing in the first place. And yeah, there are so many times where the main character is like thinking about his feelings for the girl and like trying to work up the courage to ask her out. And it it's very easy to be mad at the guy like, "Dude, just say something." Here's the thing, though. A Come on. We've all been there. At least I think we've all been there. I've been there. Everyone I know has been there where like you know what you want to say but you've wanted to say it for so long you're terrified that you're going to [ __ ] it up or that if you say it like something is going to go terribly wrong.
So look I've been I've been an awkward guy who's you know never like dated much before. I've like you know um like every time I've asked a girl out for the first time it has been a process.
So, but yeah, like the way he is around Nikki, that's the character name of his crush. The way he is around her, I I I was sitting there thinking it's kind of obvious that you like her, dude. And she knows like it's made clear like the way she's talking to him, I swear it's like she's sitting there like, you know, Sarah talks a lot about you. I think she likes you. He goes, "Yeah." And she goes, "Well, how does that make you feel?" It feels like she's both telling him another girl likes him and at the same time trying to gauge like, "Do you like her back or is there someone else you like?" It feels like she's literally trying to get him to say, "Hey, I like you." And it literally gets to the point where she finally just goes, "Look, do you like me or not?"
Like the these conversations feel real and this character feels real. And again, one thing I love about the movie is nobody feels like an idiot except except for one scene, and I'll get to that. But it's also really interesting to think back to moments of this movie when you know what's revealed later, like that Nikki and his best friend were actually hooking up. It made me think back to all the other scenes with his best friend, like, "Oh, maybe that's why he wasn't too thrilled about them getting together." or maybe the reason he told him not to pour his heart out so heavily, maybe he was sabotaging him.
Who knows? But uh but then at the same time, he seemed excited at the idea that maybe his friend slept with Nikki at one point. So that's what's interesting. He felt like a layered character. He felt like he both wanted his friend to be happy, but still deep down he had feelings for Nikki and he wasn't too sure if he wanted them together or not.
It felt like he was both trying to be supportive, but also not too sure about it. And again, that's an interesting thing about the character. And you're they're ABLE TO GET THAT ACROSS WITHOUT spelling things out. You know, it's just the performance that that shows you what's going on. You know, they don't have to list a bunch of stupid exposition or go on a huge monologue or any of that [ __ ] Like, there is so much you can just figure out by watching the movie or thinking about the movie.
The [ __ ] scariest scene in this movie. And like it's actually one of the earlier scary moments, which you might say, "Oh, well, they got their scariest scene out out already. That's not a good thing." Well, first of all, there's other scary moments. And second, I like that this scene is where it is. And I'll tell you why in a second, but she's he wakes up. She's not next to him, and he realizes she's watching him sleep. And everything from how she's positioned to the soundtrack to what she's saying and how she's saying it is terrifying.
And especially at the end when she's like telling him just go back to sleep, honey. I'm like [ __ ] you. I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO SLEEP AFTER THAT. WHAT? The reason I think that that's so good where it is is cuz that was the scene that had me for the rest of the movie going, I have no [ __ ] idea what this character is going to do. And there were moments where she did other scary things or did other [ __ ] up things. Like the first scene that lets you know that something seriously long wrong is the restaurant scene, which I later found out is a clip on YouTube, so I guess a lot of people had seen it where she's JUST GOING, "OH, NO, NO, NO, NO." I feel like you could turn that scene into a meme, by the way.
you know, HER GOING, "NO, NO, DON'T DO THAT. I THOUGHT WE WERE HAVING A NICE DAY." I WOULDN'T BE surprised if that turns into like a meme on TikTok. Like when when he when uh when you ask her if we can split the bill. No, no, no, no.
Don't do like that could be a really funny joke. I wouldn't be surprised if that pops up all over the place. But I say but a lot, don't I? Anyway, um and I say that a lot, too. So yeah, that scene was really terrifying.
And then later, but I think the scene, even though that was the most terrifying, I think the scene that was the most unsettling for me was the end of the scene where he's on the phone with customer service. First of all, and what's great about that scene is it's both really funny and then becomes really scary. Like, how would you do that, man? like he's on the phone with a customer service guy about a literal supernatural object. And the customer service guy's just like, "Yeah, well, you you have an issue with the product?
What do you want to cancel it?" And then later he's like, "Yeah, I want to cancel." He's like, "Oh, we don't do that." He's like, "But you said I can cancel." He's like, "No, I was just guessing maybe that's what you want."
That was funny. Was that Curry Barker? I feel like that was Curry Barker. Let me know if I'm wrong. But then what it the way it transitions suddenly you start to hear screaming in the background like faint screaming that sounds like someone's in terrible pain and it starts getting louder. And then the guy on the phone goes, "Well, do you want to talk to her?" He goes, "Talk to who?" "Nikki." And then you can hear Nikki is screaming in agony. And at this same moment, if you're paying attention to what's going on, Nikki, who's in love with him, is standing perfectly still in front of the door at home. So I And she was she was like just perfectly still when he left and she's perfectly still when he gets back. So I don't think she's screaming. I think that's the real Nikki somewhere else like or in her subconscious or something just screaming for control back of her body. And you know, like they they reveal multiple times that that's not the real that this isn't the real Nikki. She even says at a PARTY LIKE IT'S NOT ME and starts just beating the [ __ ] out of herself. Like that could be interpreted two different ways. Her like beating the [ __ ] out of for herself. That could either be the real Nikki trying to off herself because she says later, "Please kill me." Or it could be the fake Nikki trying to beat her back into submission again. Like so much you can draw from this movie. It's impressive.
And that was just like, holy [ __ ] The whole time you're [ __ ] around with this, not even the real Nikki, the real Nikki is just suffering and being a backseat passenger throughout it all.
That alone makes the movie more unsettling and scary. Like, it just builds on itself so well. And yeah, there's the car scene. If you've seen the movie, you know what I'm talking about. where the whole time as soon as he got in the car with her, I was like, I still wasn't 100% sure if Nikki was going to show up. And let me tell you why. How did she know where they were?
They're at a park, right? They're not right outside. Like, she said, "Come meet me at the park."
And again, a reason I don't think the characters are just being stupid is like, I understand why Sarah wants to talk to him. A lot of weird stuff is going on and she doesn't know how crazy Nikki has gotten. And then Sarah told and you could say, "Oh, the guy's stupid for going to see her." But she said, "If you don't go to the park, I'm coming to you." And I'm in the theater looking at that and going, "Don't come to him."
Like, you know, cuz God knows what'll happen if you do that. So, yeah, they're at the park in a car, right? How did Nikki know they were there?
Like, maybe she's just inherently drawn to him as a result of the wish or something. I don't know. That's one part of the movie I didn't get. How did she know where they were? Feel free to let me know. But yeah, the part where she bursts through the window and starts smashing the [ __ ] out of Sarah. That made the whole theater jump and like people were like, "Oo, ah." When it was revealed like what has happened to her face. Very well done scene. I just wish I knew how she knew they were there. And then another interesting reveal when she starts h first of all she starts going this is all your fault and everyone's laughing their ass off. How do you go from terrifying everyone to making them all laugh in the same two minutes? It's amazing. And then she says you wanted this. You wished for this. And that right there tells you that this fake Nikki has known the whole time that this isn't real love. So there's like something. WHAT IS EVEN WHAT EVEN IS this Nikki? Like is she a demon? Was she created by the wish or was she summoned by what is she? There's so much I'm curious about with this film.
And also, by the way, this not being the real Nikki, I think is an interesting commentary on the idea that you're not with the real Nikki, you're with your idea of Nikki. Like, it's when it's like a good example of you love the idea of someone, but you don't actually want to be with them. Even like Nikki tells him later in another good scene where while while the fake Nikki is sleeping, the real Nikki is able to talk and she's like, "Please kill me. I can't take it anymore." And this guy that this is where he just becomes irredeemable in my eyes. He just says to her, "What's so bad about being with me?" And then she says to him, "You've never been with me." Like, dude, you should be able to put that together. Like come on. Look, I I didn't like 100% fault him before cuz he didn't know this was a real wishing stick. He and he didn't know that wasn't the real Nikki, but he knows now. Come on, dude. You know at this point you're a [ __ ] [ __ ] Like, dick.
Um, yeah. And now, okay, so here's the other scene that I thought where I thought characters were being stupid. Now, it starts off not bad at all. Like I I've been spending like half this movie saying to myself, "Get another goddamn wishing stick and cancel out your wish."
But then I remembered later. I was like, "Oh, wait. It said you only get one wish." Okay, so you'd have to get someone else to cancel out your wish.
And he eventually does exactly that. He goes to his best friend and says, "Listen, I need you to just like wish that my wish never happened and break this." And his friend goes, "I wish I had a billion dollars." is like, which again, that sounds like something someone would do, but then a real billion dollars shows up AND HE'S LIKE, "NO, IT'S RUINED." ALL RIGHT. NOW, WHAT I'VE GOT TO DO IS I'VE got to go to Nikki and tell her if she really loves me, she'll make this wish. And I'm thinking in my head, okay, I see why you think that, but if you think about it for two minutes, it's like, she's obsessively in love with you. You think she'll wish to undo that? No, dude. It's not going to happen. Here's what you do.
You you and your friend now have a billion dollars. You go to some random [ __ ] on the street and say, "Hey, you want 20 grand?
Say this and break this stick and I will give you 20 grand. In fact, here's 10 grand right now. I'll give you 10 more if you just do this." That I guarantee you that'll work on somebody. YOU HAVE A BILLION DOLLARS. You can try this like 20 times if you want. Like why didn't you just do that? So yeah, that was my other nitpick about the film. So yeah, I guess my only nitpicks about this film are how the hell did Nikki know where they were? Um, why didn't you try that with the wishing sticks? And for some people, the loud noises might feel like cheap jump scares, but I loved the film.
And oh boy, the way it ended like uh poor Nikki. That's all I have to say.
Poor poor Nikki. Oh, one thing I also like about this movie is the wishes happen instantly. I didn't expect that when he wished that she would fall in love with him. I thought it was she was going to come up to him the next day or something, but no, it's immediate. You see that she stopped right in front of her house and turned around and came to him. And that's actually like I'm like, "Oh, yeah. Why wouldn't that be the situation?"
So, yeah. I mean, love the movie. N out of 10. I have a few little nitpicks, but it does not nearly outweigh just how well these people pulled off what they were doing. And from what I've seen, I looked a little bit online. It sounds like they were all having a great time shooting it. So, good for them. Uh, Curry Barker, way to [ __ ] go, man. I will definitely go see your next movie when it comes out in theaters. I'm really glad I went and supported this in the theater. And, um, if you release the NC17 cut, I'll buy it. Please release it. Please. I want to see this movie in its uncut glory. I want to see exactly what you intended with this thing.
That's about it. I don't know how to end videos.
