The 'space jellyfish' phenomenon occurs when rocket exhaust plumes from launches like SpaceX's Falcon 9 reach high altitudes in the upper atmosphere, where they catch direct sunlight while observers remain in darkness below, causing the exhaust to spread out in thin air and glow as a giant drifting neon cloud stretching across the sky.

Space Jellyfish spotted over Vero Beach this morning! 🌌🪼Added:
This morning's SpaceX launch put on one of those classic Florida sky shows. From Vero Beach, the Falcon 9 cleared the Cape just before sunrise and the second it hit the upper atmosphere, the whole plume exploded into that glowing space jellyfish shape. It happens because the rocket climbs high enough to catch direct sunlight while we're still in the dark down here. The exhaust spreads out in the thin air. The sun lights it from below the horizon and suddenly you get this giant drifting neon cloud stretching over the Atlantic. You could see the booster arc away, the second stage punch toward orbit, and the whole sky painted in blues and whites like something alive. Only in Florida do you wake up, look east, and catch a jellyfish floating 60 miles above the Earth.
