The New 2026 HONDA ATC400X Three WheelerHinzugefügt:
Welcome back, guys.
>> What are you working on?
>> I am restoring a 350X with slight modifications. You know, you know Heat. Heat.
Johnny Black.
All right, guys. We've got an exciting project right here. Yeah, we kind of buzzed through all the fabrication. This is about 4 days worth of work right here. So, let's dive into it. So, as you saw, the first step was basically just getting this thing in CAD. So, I actually got the frame in CAD with a 3D scan. I drew the fabrication table. I've got everything mounted up. I've got the frame fixtured so I can cut it. Now, the second I actually cut the frame apart, believe it or not, it was trying to squeeze in about a/4 in. And that's why I fixture stuff. So, just what we like to do to uh keep everything as straight as possible. Um, yeah, once the motor was in, I just took my time, built some motor mounts. Get that out of the way.
basically got the headstay built and then I went to the front motor mount.
I actually built the rear motor mount.
Now to do the 400X conversion on the 350X, it does not work with the pivot bolt going through the engine. You must do this offset bracket. It's a little bit unfortunate of a design, but to keep everything where it needs to be to keep the exhaust happy, to keep the carburetor happy, all the stuff you need, you basically just have to shift that motor forward a little bit. Now, we were very particular about the height of the sprocket cuz we want to make sure the chain works correctly. If you don't remove the lower frame rails, you can't get the engine to sit low enough. So, I basically built all this stuff right here.
This is all brand new. Went with 095 DOM tube. Now, this is a little bit comical, but if you look at the stock frame tubes, this is why they break.
This is why they break. That's a factory weld. You can see how the MIG wire is just kind of poked through. But this is 063 wall.
It's super thin. It's uh not really adequate for this motor. So, took the advantage of uh cutting everything apart. Again, we went with 095 thick wall tubing and uh replaced all these OEM pieces. I also just want to note that the factory tubing is actually 875.
So, we beefed it up to uh to 1 in.
And I also made some nice uh lower motor mounts right here. So, these just simply just slide in.
Make everything as modular as possible.
I know how stuff is in this industry.
Motor mounts like to crack. So, we went with 1875 thick motor mounts. And that's really the main issue on a 350X. So, yeah, if you don't want to have your frame crack, run thicker motor mounts.
Your motor is actually your biggest gusset for your uh for your frame. Um, and lastly, we are going to be running an oil tank up here. So, I removed the uh stock little baffle that's right here that covers up the snorkel. So, we're going to have some weld nuts on here.
We're going to have a nice aluminum oil tank just sitting right there. And we're going to run the factory oil cooler on the left side. So that'll all be the same. So pretty cool.
You can kind of get a little bit of a view of how the carburetor fits. So we went with Electron 400X carburetor.
We had to remove quite a bit of the frame. Now doing that, I'm actually readding gussets. Like here you can kind of see we've got some gussets on each side. some some nice subframe gussets on each side.
That's really going to add some strength back here. Um, being that the 400 is electric start. We made a battery box.
Now, believe it or not, this battery box is so beefy, it actually acts like a subframe gusset. So, once this is all bolted in, it's actually going to add a bunch of support back here cuz these things always crack. So, this frame had a little crack right here, but we already got that welded up and reand blasted. Yeah, it's pretty much it. But, uh, had the motor in and out like five times just getting everything perfect.
It's the first time doing this conversion. So, want to check all the boxes on this one. Let's put it that way. It's time to pull the motor out.
We're going to get the motor out. We're going to get the frame in powder coat and we're going to start assembling this bad boy. So, let's continue on.
Where do we want to go? Everywhere.
All right. Yeah. Go ahead and pop that carburetor off real quick.
>> That might help.
We're going to edit all that out.
>> Yeah, >> it's all fine. Um, basically only went down about a/4 inch on these, but it lets the engine come out a lot easier.
As you can see, it was like 2 seconds.
All right, spin it. All right, that should be good.
>> Solid.
>> Hell yeah.
>> All right.
>> Yeah, it's just a little view at the mounting.
See the motor mounts go just like this. I can adjust.
So again, everything's modular, simple.
Pretty excited about it. Powder coat time.
I'm a Heat. Heat.
Heat. Hey, Heat.
up.
Drop.
>> Well, guys, we got a little excited. We jumped ahead. We got the motor in, got the brakes all around. Uh, throttle cables ran, carbs on.
We just we got motivated and we just didn't didn't want to stop. So, um we'll try and film a little more for you guys now. But this is how she's looking so far.
>> So, we're pretty much down to uh I guess welding again, which I knew I was going to do this at the end. So, if you just take a look see at the exhaust here, I'm actually going to use this factory exhaust mount with the 400x headpipe.
So, we've got everything mocked up. I went ahead and made a nice little weld nut bracket and kind of see how nice that lines up on there. Pretty mint. So, I'm going to get that all tuned up here. Tack it on and then I'm going to do some finish welding on the exhaust. It's really just one weld and silencer will pretty much go right on. We went with a Lex exhaust.
Reason I like these, they have a swivel joint with springs, so it's super easy for custom builds. We've also got an exhaust hanger strap that'll pretty much go anywhere. So, once this is on there, it's going to look super clean. We already mocked it up, but uh you guys will see that at the end, guys. Now, you guys are going to notice that we did powder coat the engine covers. Um I also did pull the head off and do a uh valve job.
Everything was pretty much bent. just had a lot of carbon, but this thing was very low hours. So, we went ahead and uh did all the new valve seals, top end gaskets, new gaskets on the side covers, and uh yeah, basically just gave it a good check over and service. So, we went ahead and made a coil mount when I was fabricating. So, the coil kind of just sits up here. You run the coil wire up through the headstay right up to the front right there. We got plenty of room for the carburetor. So, we're using the factory cable guides. There is just enough room with the gas tank on here for this carburetor. the way this comes out. So, we got lucky there and we're going to end up making a custom airbox assembly and uh yeah, more or less just button up the rear. But first step is let's get going on the exhaust and we'll uh continue on Take your hand.
Your hand.
It's a ticket. It's a ticket to your man. It's a ticket a ticket to your hand. It's a ticket. It's a ticket to your hand. It's a ticket. It's a ticket to your man. It's a ticket. It's a ticket to your hand. It's a ticket. This ticket.
Heat.
Heat.
If you made it this far, thank you. I know there's a lot of technical details in this video. Um, moving forward in our videos, we're actually going to try to do like literally a start to a finish so you guys can see the whole process. Now, we only left out about 80% of it, but that's okay. At least you're seeing what we go through to make these builds happen. So, the hardest thing about this build was definitely the oil tank. Um, yeah, it's what it is. So, let's walk around over here and just take a look see at it, guys. So, first off, we actually started with the OEM 350X oil cooler. I wanted to incorporate that cuz it's super clean. And on this side, this is where all the hard work came in was getting this oil tank to actually fit.
clear the triple clamp when I'm at full lock right here and keep the capacity of the 400 EX oil tank. So, if you get up under here, you can kind of see I was able to use the factory screened return line, just this piece about one inch long. I did all stainless tubing to these custom lines here.
And I actually had to remake the inlet and the outlet on the engine. So that was the hardest part was actually these little pieces right here. Keeping those nice and flat after welding. That was tough.
Had to do some lapping. But everything is super clean. The oil basically feeds to the cooler back to the tank up over here.
Then it obviously drains out the bottom and goes back to the engine.
So, obviously, you can't run a bike without an intake. And anytime you're doing something custom, it's custom, especially when you add a battery box.
So, we went with the tried andrue uh basically CRF style intake that we build. Um, it's actually going to work really well with the 400 engine. Um, we've got the custom battery box back here, which we talked about when we were fabricating. Now, the packaging of the wiring was tough on this bike. There's just so much wiring going on on the 400 EX in general to put it on the 350X. So, I was able to put the voltage regulator up behind the battery box. We used the 400 tail light. If you come around this side, you can't really see it because I have the cover on it, but we've got the starter solenoid under here. Got the main plugs back here.
I made a custom bracket for the CDI box back here. To do that, we had to actually add about two feet to the harness because the CDI box would have been up in the front.
And yeah, made a nice little I'm going to call it a basket. There's so many plugs and wires up front on the 400 EX harness.
So, I've got that tucked behind the headlight. Come up over the top here.
Got the Q switch on top of the headlight with the indicator, which is really nice. Now, we went with a custom headlight because the 350X headlight just honestly, it's terrible for inverted forks. So, tried and true BVC light with some custom uh custom bracketry to hold everything.
Super bright. Works really good with this setup. All right, guys. My favorite part. I'm going to go in time lapse.
We're going to get the graphics installed and uh show you guys what this thing looks like and then we're going to start it up. So, let's get to it. Most important part when you're restoring anything. I've got the VVC billet bracket. This is going to tighten everything up so the fenders aren't flopping. We actually found these on eBay. So, somebody remakes these uh pads.
And then finding one of these is near impossible, but we did. So, we actually did a nice layer of foam under the cover to just kind of preserve the the look.
The the foam was rough, but we made it work and it looks really good. So, all right. Graphics time.
All right.
Take it.
350X would not be a 350X without a beefy skid plate. The reason I did this, I had to guard the oil lines. They stick out a little bit more than they would have.
So, went ahead and built a fairly beefy skid plate for this thing. So, let's get that installed. And then we're going to pull this bad boy outside and get it started up.
>> Man, this thing is pretty to look at.
>> So clean. Got the reverse right here.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
All right, guys. So, you might be wondering, are we doing three-wheeler builds again or not? We're doing restorations.
There's no law against restoring a vintage three-wheeler. Now, our customer came to us with a 350X project. He wanted an updated engine. He wanted basically reverse, electric start, all the stuff you get with a brand new bike, but it's from the 80s. So, we ended up swapping a 400X engine into this, which, as you saw in the video, it's not easy.
I've got a couple weeks of work into this bad boy right here to make it as perfect as I can make it. And I'm going to say I'm proud of it. The hardest part again was that damn oil tank, but hey, we got it done. And uh yeah, so in the front we've got the invert suspension.
So in the rear we've got the complete TRX 450R conversion with our custom swing arm, which allows you to run all the TRX 450R components in the rear. And yeah, guys, this thing is epic. I'm super excited about it. I'm going to take this thing for a spin real quick and uh see how it feels. But I'm going to preserve the tires because I'm going to let my customer break it in.
Heat. Heat.
Just feels like a brand new 80s 350X with a 400X engine. Pretty excited about it.
This was a hard one. probably one of the cleanest builds I've ever done, but uh hopefully my customer appreciates it and uh sees and understands all the fine details that went into this bad boy. So, boy, that thing is uh a lot of fun.
Brings back some damn memories for sure.
I don't even want to put the helmet on it. It's too nice.
But uh yeah, like I said, I hope he uh appreciates all the effort that went into it because it was not easy.
Sure is neat having reverse. It's even neater having electric start on a 350X.
It's a lot better than them janky electric start conversion kits that fail after three times of starting it. I can tell you that.
But yeah, stay tuned for a follow-up video. But we're going to, I guess, take a deep dive, go through every single part that went into this thing. Thanks for watching, guys. And if you haven't yet, subscribe to the channel. You get to see cool builds like this in the future.
Thanks for watching and head to bbcct.com for any of these parts or to contact us.
All right, guys. Thank you. You know, it's funny. I went through this whole video. My favorite part of the build right here.
So, Alex went ahead and made a bracket off the grab bar. So, we could run the tool kit. We still got the tool kit in here from the 400 400X.
Can pack lunch right there if you want.
That's my favorite part.
Thanks for watching.
