Strangest Irish History w/ Justine Megan & Cian Griffin | The Green Room Podcast
Added:I did fly to Scotland for nachos once.
>> Shut up.
>> I swear to God.
>> Most important question. Was it worth it?
>> No. [laughter] Hello everybody and you are very welcome to another episode of the Green Room podcast. I am your host, Colin Regan.
And joining me today are two wonderful guests, Justine Megan, and Kian Griffin.
>> Hi.
>> Hello. [laughter] Why were we both so quiet?
>> I was holding my breath while you did that intro.
>> It was like an ASMR podcast. Hi.
>> Hey, guys. Welcome to the channel.
[laughter] >> Guys, how are you? How have you been?
>> Really good, wasn't it?
>> Yeah. How are you?
>> I am. I'm I'm doing good. The ones [laughter] who I am. Uh, yeah. No, I'm doing good. Thankfully. had a a busy I suppose week or a week and a bit. On the last podcast I said uh I'm not doing anything right now, but by the time this goes up I'll have done a bunch of stuff.
And uh in the past week I've been to uh Metallica uh the Mother Pride block party and I saw Florence in the Machine.
So I've just been gigging it up the past few days. So >> you doubt who was best.
>> Uh who was best? Uh I suppose. Yeah, Florence. I didn't do the math on it, but I think it was Kelly and I's 10th or 11th time seeing Florence.
>> Oh my god. Insane. Yeah. So, when you add up like music festivals and then just like individual gigs, >> I don't think I met my own granddad 10 times, Colin. [laughter] >> Well, >> also, you just reminded me I met you at the end of the Mother Pride block party on Saturday. It was really good though, wasn't it?
>> It was so so I saw Ken there, but I wasn't talking to Ken there. No, sorry.
>> I'm obviously the favorite. [laughter] >> Yeah, apparently.
>> Well, you did like skulk your way out of the crowd. I was like walking by and I just saw >> Yeah, I was like it was a little bit like Mr. Burns coming out of the woods and it was like well actually he doesn't come out as threatening as I did.
>> You're like I bring you love and you were just like I was like oh hey just hey justine how's it going?
>> So good. I feel like it's Christmas though. Like the leadup to it is always so good. I'm like my mental health is in the bin. My wallet is empty. My liver is [ __ ] >> I'm nose driving right now. But it was so fun.
>> It was great. I mean yeah Peaches did a DJ set. Uh there was Scissor Sisters was thereing. Uh then there was Yeah. Ela May doing a DJ set. Jinx Monsoon was there part of the House of Wig drag show. It was >> was that the next day?
>> That was the next day. Yeah, cuz I didn't do that one. I just did the Friday.
>> I didn't do the Saturday.
>> They were so good. That was my second time seeing this.
>> That was my first year.
>> I seen them at Hoopla at the start of this month.
>> Ah.
>> And on the same night, I got mugged.
>> But it's kind of a funny story. Well, it's actually not.
>> Can I throw it up? [laughter] >> Yeah, go for it.
>> Sure, go ahead.
>> No, I was leaving the sisters from London and it was like after a night out cuz we went out afterwards and I was walking with my friends across the street. Apparently, phone snatching is really common.
>> Yeah. Very in London.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> And I knew I work occasionally in London, so I'm very paranoid. Like keep my phone >> cuz it's my identity. And I was walking at like 3:00 a.m. from a chicken shop, which are great. I don't know if you've been to them. We need them in Ireland.
Like >> really? What's the type of chicken? Is it like deep fried KFC type chicken or like >> kind of? Yeah. It's like sticky and southern and spicy chicken shop. But I mean, no wonder Ameilia deer burger is there all the time.
>> But when she before I had them, I was like that's kind of rotten. Like why is she like that looks like a bangle chipper? Like I Anyway, [laughter] I was walking with my phone and I had a big like I'd say about 20 worth of chicken.
20 the currency. I'd say way more than that. [laughter] >> No, wait.
>> Or even like the heavy chicken of the road. [laughter] >> But as I was walking across to my taxi, I was looking at my phone and some guy um like snatched out of my hand.
Was it?
>> No, he was he was running. Don't worry, this is a good story. Okay. Um, and as he went to snatch me, my friend said, "I I pulled the chicken out of reach [laughter] and let him take the phone."
>> Then I grabbed him by the shoulder. We were like wrestling on the ground.
>> Your priorities were in order, too.
>> Did you rest on the ground?
>> Yeah. And I I he ripped a shirt that said gay, horny, and depressed. And we were tussing on the ground, but I got the chicken and the phone back.
>> So he was gay, horny, and depressed.
>> No, THAT WAS ME.
>> NO, IT WAS HIS.
>> SORRY. I thought he was wearing the t-shirt. And I was like [laughter] I was like, that's like that's so bad. Like why is he doing that to somebody like [laughter] Hurt people hurt people.
>> Yeah, you know.
>> Anyway, so true.
>> You got the phone back?
>> Yeah. Nice >> buzz. God. And none of my chicken was hurt.
>> I was just going to ask the chicken.
Yeah. Yeah.
>> You was like, "Time for some celebratory chicken."
>> For a second. I like I pictured it like that the chicken went everywhere and instead of having like two people having like a mud fight, you were having like a chicken wing fight like in [laughter] the floor like wrestling in the middle of all this chicken.
>> I It was completely unscathed. But for some reason, I didn't really When I got home, my friend said I laid out all the chicken in a line in the bag. I He's like, "I think you were counting." I don't really remember that part, but um >> you were counting.
>> Anyway, this time seeing scissors scissors was better.
>> This set a five piece boneless banquet.
There's only four and a half here.
>> Oh no, it was like it was double digits in chicken. Like it was >> Oh my god, was it delicious? It >> was delish.
>> So you were kind of mugged.
>> That is genuinely very prevalent because it's saying it's on bikes or scooters and people would just be like cuz they're just like either tourists or whatever just looking out on the phone and yoink.
>> Apparently at cross at crosswalks, what are they called? Zebra crossings people like hold their hand. You're meant to like turn away from the traffic because people just you want >> Oh my god.
>> I'd say or like people have like a big you know their like hand top of their hand covering their phone like so if someone does grab it it's not gonna >> or Yeah. Yeah. Or get or just carry an iPad cuz they're hard to snatch.
[laughter] >> Yeah.
>> Silly question and I probably nearly already know the answer. When your phone gets robbed clearly they can't get into it if it's locked. So are they just selling?
>> I think they're hoping though cuz you're on it when they snatch it that the phone is unlocked.
>> And mine was. So, >> but then it was they just have to make constantly use it so that it doesn't go idle. Like was you I mean >> I was pro I don't know what window was open but it probably wasn't safe for work. [laughter] >> Well, I'm glad you got it back. It was like a full circle story there.
>> Just mean what's what's new to you?
>> H I had an interview with a journalist yesterday.
>> Yeah.
>> For the crimes committed.
>> For the crimes I committed. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. He pinned me down. He's like, "What did you do?" No. Um he wanted to he met me and was like, "I've never met somebody who does comedy and is a lawyer by day. let's write about your life. And I was like, that's mad. So, I'm waiting to get that back and I'm not entirely sure what publication it's going to. I have a small inkling, but I can't confirm it yet.
>> Okay. Interesting. I thought I was going you're going to be interviewed for uh stealing Kian's phone that time and >> then this [laughter] guy he he was holding. He was so distracted.
>> The perfect crime. Well, just obviously I mentioned Florence. I got this wonderful t-shirt, right? Cuz I was like, got to go, you know, got to get the merch. But walked in, saw the merch stand. I was like, "Oh, there's a few t-shirts there that I like." I was like, "Oh, might might come back and get some." And me and Kelly went to the Red Bull stand. Kelly's up there ordering drinks. And while uh just waiting, there was a bunch of seagulls flying overhead over all the food stands. And immediately we're there like 5 minutes.
A seagull just like shits on the t-shirt that I was wearing. I was like, "Cool."
[laughter] I was like, "Well, like that's great. I know I'm going back to the merch stand." And that was um 45 well spent.
>> I hate singles. I saw a man nearly have his lunch robbed by one on St. William Street yesterday and he was eating a bambino's slice and he was too far away for me to like shout at him to be like there's a seagull like literally here but I could just see the whole thing happening in slow motion.
>> God.
>> And this legal like dipped and he didn't get the pizza slice but by the time the stall happened we were then close enough and I was like I saw that ages ago happening. I was [laughter] like that's actually that's actually such a mean thing of me to say. I didn't mean to say it like that. But he was like what?
>> It was actually like less help saying that than if you were like oh look out.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I was like, "Oh, I saw that happening miles away." But yeah, yeah, sorry.
>> Just decided not to help me at all. I just I just watched that happen actually. So, yeah. So, I was actually really I was really hoping for this seagull there to [laughter] >> I mean, no, I wasn't. A seagull gave birth on my roof a little while ago, like on the like I could see it from my balcony like the under roof thing underneath here and I watched the little seagull like >> be born.
>> They're kind of rotten, aren't they?
>> Ah, they're not the baby ones.
[laughter] >> I think the parents mo the babies. The parents have like gorgeous ombre beaks like I winged eyel >> cute in a very Okay. No, they cute in an ugly way.
>> Cute in an ugly way in a cute way.
>> Like I love like Shih Tzu dogs and stuff like that. Like they're ugly. They're so ugly. They're cute. Like >> sorry. Go on.
>> But just I don't like them because I think they are a scourge on Dublin city center. However, when one is born on your roof and you watch it grow and you watch it learn how to fly, I was like, "Oh, >> yeah. Okay. rejected, your honor.
>> And you're like, he's going to grow up to steal a guy's pizza outside. Oh my god.
>> Go get those chips, baby.
>> This very a very bird-based opening.
>> I actually forgot the guy who mugs me was dressed as a seagull. [laughter] >> Are you sure it wasn't just a seagull?
>> You never know these days. They're [ __ ] massive. [laughter] >> They are huge. That's eating all the pizza and the chips and all.
>> What are they feeding them? [laughter] >> Street food.
>> I thought it was just a bloke dressed as a seagull. Yeah. Yeah. Like some sort of stag do or something.
[laughter] >> Oh god. Well, yeah. That does it for a very bird-based catchup. We'll be right back after this.
And welcome back to part two of our wonderful little podcast here. What we're going to be doing for part two is sharing the weirdest facts of our hometowns. So, yes, obviously there's uh, you know, lots of places in Ireland, lots of history and culture, but there's also lots of weird little tidbits about all the places that we live. So, we're all going to share a little bit of an odd fact. Justine, would you like to go first?
>> I would. So, the place where I live has a round tower in the middle of the village that's there since like the eth or nth century. And when the Vikings lived in that village and like I don't know ran it or whatever to scare intruders off, they used to put intruders heads on the top of sticks.
>> Mhm.
>> Like years ago. I just thought that was really freaky and really cool.
>> Jeez.
>> And I only learned it today for this podcast. [laughter] >> Where are you from? Dublin. Like >> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
>> So it's a round tower and it's just like they just I guess what? put put heads on pikes to like scare people off >> to ward like it used to be like a a little Viking settlement I guess and there's a round tower still there that like you can go up and see it now that's from like the 8th or 9th century it's really cool but when I was small I used to think obviously like it's Rapunzel's tower oh my god she's up there with long hair and like found a key and ran home be like mom I have the key to Rapunzel's tower my mom was like yeah okay [laughter] >> it's like Rapunzel Rapunzel let down your hair and it's just like a head on a pipe >> head comes flying what the [ __ ] >> yeah but Yeah, I just think it's cool and historical and there's a lot of like you can go and do a little tour of it and there is like a round tower coffee shop underneath. It's all very gentrified now, isn't it? [laughter] >> I like it things like that where they're old historical things where it's like come see the place where we used to put heads on sticks. Get your nice little caramel latte just over there and you're like dude, isn't this nice? Bring the kids come on down. Yeah, Kim, what's your >> When you said round to air, I thought you meant Glendelock cuz I'm from Wicklo. So I was I was like, "Oh [ __ ] [laughter] if we have the same fun fact, I'm screwed." Um I'm from Wikllo City, Wikllo Town. Um the city part of the mindset. Um [laughter] Hollywood is in Wikllo. So this is going to be a reach now, okay? Cuz there's very few facts about Wikllo I could find.
>> The real Hollywood County Wikllo existed for centuries before LA Hollywood. And I think Wikllo has more links to famous Hollywood films than actual Hollywood.
No way.
>> Did you make that up?
>> Um I don't It's weird as fact. Just go.
Uhh I just think I just I don't know if I'm just saying whatever.
>> Okay. Well, my the fact is that it existed from 1192 which was ages ago. Um and the garden of Ireland i.e. Wikllo has been a filming location for like loads. So Braveheart filmed everyone thinks it's the Scottish Highlands is actually WL Mountains. The Vikings, Loe, the Guinness Lake, and most famously maybe infamously Lindsay Lohan's Irish Wish. Have you seen that?
>> Yes.
>> [ __ ] [laughter] >> It is bad.
>> I haven't seen it, but I saw like one or two clips of it. I was just like, I watched it all. Do you know what?
Lindsay Lohan can have my firstborn.
[laughter] Like, she does no wrong.
>> I know. She She is a good egg. And she actually drank in my local when she was filming it and she photo. Yeah. Which is a claim to fame for them, I'd say. But I don't know if like AI was around when that film was made, but I feel like the hatch would have been AI.
>> When was it released?
>> Uh, I don't No, I think that was like 2024.
2033 maybe. Was it? Sean, can you just Google when Irish Wish was the movie?
>> 2024.
>> 2024. There you go.
>> Production for the movie began September 2022.
>> Took me two years to make that.
>> I know. Probably co or the writer strike. Hollywood actor strike.
>> Filmed in Dublin, Wiklo, and Mayo.
>> Yeah. I remember seeing they were filmed outside the Project Art Center and I remember seeing pictures of her outside the Project Art Center where they had a yellow New York taxi cab looking like she was still in New York, but she was in Temple Bar. I was going to say is it that or is it there's a movie called like leap day where it's like someone a woman going to like Ireland or something to meet a fella or whatever propose or something but >> there's a wish she wish no I think it's I think it's maybe it's probably the exact same movie just different names [laughter] but it's lots of that where it's just like oh I'm just going to get a bus and she gets a Dublin bus and like ends up in Cork or something.
>> Can I just argue though?
>> Go ahead. The bus from Dublin to Cork probably feels like a normal drive to an American person because it is so vast in America >> and they love Ireland >> and they but they'll do a three-hour drive daily, not a bother. Whereas I would do that three times a year. I'm like I'm not driving for more than an hour without a tantrum.
>> I know. Yeah. [laughter] >> You'll see that like you know gigs where it be like I drove eight hours to see you. I love you blah blah whatever. And it's like I'm not spending the entire day driving. That's mental. No. When we went to LA, we got a a Uber or a taxi or whatever from our the airport to our hotel. We're like, "Oh, this would be grand." And it took an hour to get from the airport to And I was just like, "That's insane." I was like, "That's literally driving Dublin to Carlo." I was just [laughter] >> LA traffic is >> insane, though. It's mental. And it's the only way to get around. Much like that SNL Californiaifornian sketch where all they do is just talk about how they got from A to B to C. It's just like if you don't drive like you're Yeah. You're goose.
>> You're goose.
>> The [laughter] the Metallica concert was in another bird reference. Take that.
[laughter] >> The the Metallica concert. Loads of Americans over for it. Like they traveled to Ireland for a concert.
>> Yeah.
>> Well, that's loads of people do that.
When Taylor Swift was doing the air tour, there was like people couldn't get tickets cuz it was a bunch of like I think Americans coming over to like go to each show or whatever. And it's like save some seats for the rest of us. That happened a lot like and I think sometimes they were cheaper than what they were going over for in the States.
So for the extra couple hundred quid they'd actually get a trip out of it as well.
>> Yeah. I suppose to be fair we probably do that when like going to like UK or like Europe somewhere for a gig.
>> Oh like I've done that on music festivals and stuff. They're so much cheaper in different countries.
>> You told me you were a hoopla.
[laughter] >> Like I traveled 45 minutes.
>> Yeah.
>> To London.
>> Flying from I doing a long haul flight for a music concert. Yeah.
>> Not for me. I like I cycled here in 15 minutes and I felt sorry for myself.
>> Yeah, >> that's too much for me.
>> That'd be like if I was like I I went to Japan for one concert and then and then came back home. You'd be like what?
That's mental.
>> I went to Paris for a coffee. That's [laughter] the equivalent in my head.
>> I did fly to Scotland for nachos once.
>> Shut up.
>> I swear to God.
>> Most important question. Was it worth it?
>> No. [laughter] >> What nachos were they?
>> They were these nachos in a bar and they were massive. They were like that size and I seen them on Instagram and I'm clearly a sucker for some sort of marketing, right?
>> Me and my ex partner or my ex-boyfriend at the time were like, "Fuck it. We go to Scotland and get them." We did for the weekend and they were terrible and it wasn't worth it.
>> Okay. Priority. Some Some people travel to a different country to see Taylor Swift. And some people traveled to another country just to eat some nachos, you know, >> in a pub. Like, >> yeah, >> that's a risk.
>> I know. Like they weren't even like a like a good Mexican restaurant or something like that. They were just in a bar. Some guy named Alistister was just was just putting some like tomato on some like Doritos or something.
>> Sweaty college kid at the back throwing it back [laughter] like a load of crisps in a bowl with too much sour cream like >> So I'm from County Carlo. Uh don't hold it against me. Don't hold it against me.
Uh but yes, I'm from the town of County Carlo and obviously Ireland has quite a lot of castles. You know, obviously lots of people I think you know probably visit Ireland to be like, "Oh my god, I want to see castle. I want to see castles." I have a fun fact here about Carlo Castle. Uh, and it's an excerpt here from a book from 1992. This is an excerpt from The Guide to National and Historic Monuments of Ireland by Peter Harbison. The original keep of Carlo Castle was three stories high and was square in shape with stout 3/4 round towers at the corner, but only the eastern half still stands with its two corner towers and connecting wall.
Having later passed into the hands of the Hamilton family, it was granted to a doctor Middleton who, in order to create more room for the building of a lunatic asylum in 1814, blew up parts of the castle. As a result, most of the castle had to be demolished as a safety precaution, leaving only the two towers and the adjoining wall of what was once one of the finest Norman castles in Lster. So, I just love the idea of this guy decided to turn the castle into a lunatic asylum and he used too much dynamite and blew up basically the majority of the castle which makes you think uh what happened to the population of Carlo uh in the in the years in sense is everyone is everyone from 1814 onwards just descendants of lunatics >> because they had nowhere to be treated or you know >> you know you're just freely roaming, procreating.
>> Yes.
>> And that's why we have you.
>> Well, I'm actually absolved of this cuz my parents are from Cork and Kerry. So, I I I I made it out of that. This is the thing. If you go to Carlo Castle, it's just one castle wall. So, you could look at it and go, "Wow, look at this majestic castle." And then you could just like walk around it and go, "Oh, it's >> it's just a wall.
>> It's just a wall. [laughter] It's it's just a wall.
>> It's an illusion of a castle."
>> Yeah. Carlo didn't get to break the fourth wall.
>> Oh, very good. But yes, this is the thing. You know, I think Carlo gets a bit of a bad rap. I think because I think people say like, "Oh, Carlos is just kind of like one of those towns you drive through. It's not really, you know, it's not much to it or whatever."
But I think there's lots to car, you know. See Ronin like Inertia.
>> Search like Inertia is Carlo royalty.
She grew up in Carlo. We have the Foundry Nightclub, which is Europe's biggest nightclub.
>> I don't know how you're going to fact check that, but as a small >> I've heard that a lot. I don't believe that. growing up in Carlo when all you knew was Carlo and you never even knew anywhere else in Ireland. You're like, "Wow, Europe's biggest nightclub is here in my hometown."
>> I think I've been in that.
>> You It's the only nightclub in Carlos.
So, you definitely have >> on a college mystery tour.
[clears throat] >> What a what a great mystery tour [laughter] that is. We've been driving for an hour. I wonder where we end up.
Carlo, >> it's ringing a weird bell.
>> If you look up, you'll recognize the Facebook photos. It used to be like iconic photography. iconic photography for someone from Wikllo [laughter] because we only had one nightclub that closed as well. Um, Cersa Sers is a good one. I feel like Sorry, I should have mentioned hosers in Wicklo.
>> Oh, >> and Chenado Connor chose to live there.
See, >> instead of Dublin.
>> Well, you know, you missed your chance.
You can't add any more facts. No. Sorry.
No, no, no. But here's the thing, Carlo.
H, we've The foundry, Europe's biggest nightclub. We have not one, not three, but two cinemas.
>> Impressive.
>> Yeah. And a skate park that took like 15 years to build. So, just saying Carl's got a lot going on.
>> A skate park that took 15 years to build.
>> Yeah. I just remember like I don't know in the mid200s when I like attempted skateboarding for like 3 months. Uh I remember being like, "Oh, they're building a skatepark. They're going to be building a skateart." And then I remember looking it up and I think it was built in like I don't know it was like 2018 or something. That's so sad.
>> Yeah, I know. [laughter] >> Also, another bit of celebrity info is Britney Broki of course. Yeah. you know, YouTuber, comedian, podcaster extraordinaire, has re I guess really h enjoyed Ireland the past few years, has visited Ireland, I think has been to electric picnic, but she spent New Year's she spent New Year's Eve in Carlo in a I guess castle, but I think it's more like a country house. But she spent New Year's Eve in Carlo and everyone was all the comments were just like, "Girl, what are you doing in Carlo?"
>> And it was Caleb. Caleb Andrew Caleb her. Yeah. Yeah. And Drew whole gang >> in Yeah. It was just like everyone was like anywhere in Ireland and you chose Carlo. But why not Carlo?
>> You said they were in a castle. Were they in the lunatic castle?
>> No, they weren't in this lunatic castle now un no unfortunately. But yeah, so this the thing now they didn't they they went to a place I think outside uh Carlo Town. A place called Boris.
>> Boris >> it sounds. Yeah.
>> We we had haggus and got [ __ ] on by seagulls. Like it doesn't sound >> doesn't sound Irish.
>> It sounds Scottish to me.
>> They had haggus.
>> No. Well, >> no. as in he's saying bar sounds like a place in Scotland or something.
>> Oh, sorry, sorry, sorry. I was like, well, where do you get haggus over here?
>> He was just combining my Florence the machine story and your natural story and he just combined them.
>> Sorry. Yeah.
>> I was like, yeah, shout out. Yeah, but yeah, it's just gas. I just love the idea of a guy being like, I'm going to renovate this castle and then just use probably like three times as much dynamite as he meant it and was like, oh [ __ ] [laughter] Imagine Dere you on just blowing the wall out of some house in Sony better.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. And like the gas and Stony B are worth 700 grand. [laughter] Correct it. Like for fact there we just got mortgage approved.
>> If there was home renovation shows in Yeah. 1814 that that's the one I want to see, you know. I mean it was all very very wholesome stuff, you know. We had lunatics and we had Heads on Pikes, you know.
>> Lovely.
>> Just like real familyfriendly stuff.
Yeah. Well, that's all our wonderful little facts about all our wonderful little hometowns. We'll see you right back after this.
and welcome back to the final part of the podcast. What we're going to be doing in my periphery, everyone's doing a little shoulder shimmy shakes there, but yes, what we're going to be doing for the final part of the podcast is Oh, you know that sound, you know that sound, me, guys, >> it's time for everyone's favorite segment. There's something in the vents.
>> Yeah, we really should get them looked at. I don't know. There's definitely something going on up there. This is a little segment for everyone just have a little bit of a rant or vent about something that's just been getting at them, getting their goat, just getting them really peeved off. Justine, would you like to go first?
>> Uh, >> you can say no.
>> No, actually. Okay. All right. Fair enough.
>> I think the reason I want to go first is because I want to get real riled up. I want to get real.
>> Oh, I'll roll you up.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Ken, do you want to Do you hear that tiny little crack more? So, I thought long and hard about this section the most because wining is so fun. Yeah.
>> And I think there's a skill you need to be able to be funny at wining or you can't win because if you suck the life out of people that's that's not gooding.
Good win is when people go, "Yeah, [ __ ] those guys."
>> So true.
>> So, two honorable mentions. iCloud storage. Don't understand how it works.
It doesn't seem to work. I'm getting rinse for money and I still don't have space. [laughter] Um, and people slamming weights in the gym and being like, >> "Make it a bit grunty.
>> Why do you sound like the gruff?"
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Like I'm overstimulated as it is.
There's music blaring. It's so packed.
Stop slamming your weights. If you can't lift them down gently, they're too heavy for you.
>> Yes.
>> But the real rant is people who think they're too good for reality TV like to watch it.
>> I'm kind of dipping in at the moment and so many people are so judgy about it like, "Oh, it's such shit." I'm like, reality TV is actually a masterclass in like social science. I think it's >> it's anthropology.
>> So interesting. Now, probably better examples than Love Island violent like the traitor Big Brother or anything where there's like strategy and manipulation.
>> Social deduction.
>> Exactly.
>> I know what you mean. It's like people just tearing. It's like, oh, you like that? Oh, okay. Well, I'm going to like this thing instead. It's like, well, we all just like our own things. Like, why does one have to be at the expense of another or whatever. Yeah.
>> And we're like, especially Irish people, we're so nosy. People love like if there's a crash on the M50, there the backup goes the whole way to Whitfield because everyone slows down to like have a nose as they're going by. Everyone wants to be a fly in the wall. I'm just like reality TV is class.
>> I love reality TV. Like love love love.
And I my mom loved it. So I grew up watching it. But I think with Love Island, it can be so reduced to these are beautiful people just saying whether they fancy each other or not and having a little kiss. And it can be it can be reduced to just kind of a vanity project.
>> Yeah. There's that much strategy I think in in in the in the in the game of it. I don't think maybe there's that much strategy compared to something like the traders maybe where it's like you're actually difference.
>> I think there is a strategy in LA. So like the the goal at the end obviously is to come out semi famous with a load of brand deals for the next year or two but the actual goal within the game which we all seem to forget is like couple up and win 50 grand at the end.
>> Oh I always forget about the 50 grand actually. Yeah.
>> And then the strategy at the end is they still get to split or steal at the very end. So it is a game show >> but I think it has evolved to an extent that people know and they're always going to split because they're not going to know that they're going to come out with bigger brand deals worth more than 25 grand and that stealing the 25 grand is going to rule their ruin their public perception. your reputation. Yeah. Yeah.
>> Like if this feels very le of me. I'm kind of getting into stars at the moment. I feel like I get away with it.
I [laughter] feel like I could create the telly, take both money and get a villain edit that's like, "Oh, that was kind of that was kind of sick."
>> Do you think so? [laughter] >> Yeah, but I'm delusional.
>> So, you think you'd get the villain edit more so than you'd get the public to love you so much that they'd let you away with it? So I think reality TV especially Love Island has gone in such a route of people are so pored and trying to be like what they think the public want that proper >> we don't have villains anymore we don't have like drama >> make reality TV fake again [laughter] >> come on >> real again do you remember like the early days of Big Brother and stuff >> chaos >> funny >> and like some of the best characters >> Gemma Collins >> Gemma like everybody like so unfiltered whereas now actually I'm also watching him island and I said it in work today everyone was like how's your weekend and I was like Charlene Murphy went into Love Island [laughter] and all arguably solicitors barristers fair enough I'll turn around and went what [laughter] >> and I was like sorry it's a big day I've been waiting weeks for this okay [gasps] >> but I think when I watched the uh Casset Amore thing >> the guys were answering questions and one of the girls said if you watch it back she goes oh that's a very media trained answer >> yeah I I picked up on that as well and I was like that is taking me so out of it because like, God, they're really aware of everything.
>> It's like, yeah, why why even add that line in? Like, you could take it out and it wouldn't even wouldn't change much of the actual thing. Um, yeah, don't know.
I mean, for my reality TV that I've watched is uh I don't know 40 of the 200 seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race that there is, how could I forget?
>> There's endless drama in that. Uh, and then there's Untucked, which is sort of like the like after show kind of thing of that where it's just like now some I think more recently it has been very like everyone's a bit buddy buddy but every now and then there will just be like people just like screaming at each other uh and just like getting all in their face and stuff.
>> Early years of that. Yeah. When they were still like not monitoring how much alcohol they were giving people and they were throwing drinks and it was like messy boots.
>> That was the thing with Love Island as well. Like the first couple of seasons they were allowed to smoke and drink as much as they wanted. But look, I I will also say I do think it's better that there are safeguards in place that people are like, look, we love the entertainment.
>> However, there does need to be a certain Julia care around it.
>> Yeah.
>> I think I'm like people do things on the telly that then is there forever and it's in the public mind forever. Like I'm going to mention one person's name, Makoszie, to you and I'm going to think about >> Makoszie.
>> Makoszie from Big Brother. Okay, you weren't as big a fan as I was, [laughter] >> but I was just going to use that as an example of like that was 20 years ago and if I meant to turn into a few people I know they go, "Oh my god, do you remember that?" You know, and it just sticks with you.
>> Obviously, I don't know what's like I've never seen it, but like for those like Real Housewives shows which are just like non-stop drama and legal things and all sorts. That might be the the further extreme of uh what maybe what you're talking about in terms of like >> We're selling sunsets as well. That's quite drama. I just think it's all great and people should stop be so judgy.
>> Exactly. enjoy what you enjoy, >> but also I want more fighting.
>> However, [laughter] I will say, right, just like there's different levels of reality TV show, right?
>> Correct.
>> You have like the Traers, which is more game showy and like whatever, and then you have like ultimate like really trashy reality TV. Okay. Yeah. And there's one that I have watched two seasons of that I think is on TLC and it's called Mil Manor.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. And it's a little bit like Love Island where these young men go into a villa and they're all aged between 20 and 29 and they go to date these older women and the spin is the older women is each other's moms.
>> Oh, right. Yeah.
>> Do they know that they're >> they know? So, the boys are like going in. They're all 20 to 29y old young men, >> but they know that it's going to be a mil.
>> They know it's going to be an older woman. Yeah. But the this this twist is when they get there, they go, "Oh, the older women are my mom and a load of other hot women in their 50s and 60s."
>> So then it's also just like you have to be like chatting up and then while also like like Yeah. your mom >> being a pal son. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So it's wild and it's so gross. And you see these like 22y old men being like, "Oh yeah, like I watched my 65year-old mother get off with my other 22year-old mate." And it's just awful stuff. But you're kind of watching it a bit like this. You know what I for car crash TV.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> I do think Yeah. There's there's tears.
I think [laughter] my my actually got my new statement is that all reality TV should be painted with the same brush and it's not all trash.
>> Exactly.
>> But sometimes you need trash to just to take you away from other icks in life.
>> And also just to make yourself feel a little bit better about your own life.
>> Yeah. [laughter] You're like, "Yeah, it's not so bad. I could be in a mansion trying to chat someone up with my mouth."
>> But like there like there be a 40 year age gap like >> Yeah. Look, whatever you're into, you know what?
>> Yeah.
[laughter] >> So, what's what's your vent? Just >> my vent like it's going to get a little bit more serious from here. I'm sorry, but my vent is like I think it was announced the other day that Ireland is the most expensive in Europe for housing, healthcare, electricity, and alcohol.
>> Yeah, >> the cousy lives babes is destroying me.
That that was cost of living for anyone who who didn't understand what you meant.
>> Because he lives Jemma Collins just possessed me there for a minute. Well, as a result of that, like a lot of my friends have left the country. So, they're in London, they're in Canada, they're in Japan, they're in whatever.
>> When that had happened, had hoped it might be for a year or two and then they're like, "Oh, we're not coming back."
>> Yeah.
>> And I don't blame them.
>> No, it's hell out there.
>> It's hell out there.
>> If you have friends who immigrated to London or Australia, Canada, whatever, and it's just like, "Yeah, well, why come back?" Do you know what I mean?
It's like, what what's tier to come back to? Do you know what I mean?
>> H Yeah. Yeah, it sucks like and especially if you're like, "Oh, well, I've already moved here and I've set up shop here and blah blah." But it's also like they probably have a better just like cost of living or even just like just in general just a better day-to-day life than if they would back here. Like >> yeah, they just have better like Canada like they're renting apartments. Like yes, they're expensive, but they also have disposable income at the end of the month. It's not completely suffocating them. Like >> there's one bed apartments here that are in absolute abysmal state and they're going for €2,200.
>> I know.
>> And then people are making €2,500. So hang on, I'll live off three. Do >> it's ridiculous.
>> Do anything else. Like it's so stressful. I went out for a couple of points on Wednesday after work last week. And when I tell you I had like four points a bag of chips in a taxi home.
>> Yeah.
>> And I spent €120.
>> Eject seat.
>> No, honestly, right. I didn't like you know what I mean? My taxi was 40 quid home on its own. Like >> taxis are like a tener before you get into them. It's >> I know it's stupid. Yeah.
>> What? I visited car like no this might be a couple years ago but even still I gave your man a tener and he gave me back change and I was like I was like what no this no this doesn't make sense I' I've given you money why [laughter] you giving me money back I felt like I hadn't given him enough when I gave him tener but he was just like yeah whereas yeah in Dublin it's like like you said before you even get in it's tener you're just like it's ridiculous >> we were getting the taxi home the other day and it was €8 before we had moved anywhere just €4 service charge for you for whatever and it's like I haven't moved an inch.
>> Eight quid.
>> I know. I know. And like I would kind of love to immigrate, but there's parts of me that does love it here as well. And I have so many lovely things that are going on.
>> Yeah.
>> That I'm like, "Oh, do I want to start a new life? I'm in my 30s. Do I want to do all that?" But like >> it just does [ __ ] us. Like it's it's shocking.
>> You're right.
>> The end.
>> Fair enough. [laughter] Depending 10 slice for it to be snatched out of your hand a few times.
>> Yeah.
>> And then even just having a having a point. You're just like, "Oh, well, hey, things aren't great, but hey, why don't I just go out and have a few points?"
And then it's just like even the cost of a point is going up.
>> Even the cost of a point. I remember back in the day when we were 18, >> I'd go out with 20 quid.
>> And I would come home with change >> and you have got a taxi home and food.
>> Yeah. There used to be a night in my local nightclub. It was €250 drinks and I would like that would be you. You'd have four of them.
>> Yeah.
>> There's a tener.
>> You get your fiverr taxi home with the girls. You get your fiverr little chipper on the way home. Sorted. Make nights out with Fiverr. Again, [laughter] >> one of the college nights I would have gone to was the rock metal night and it was 250 drinks. So like I would we would go there and I would hand over €10 and I would be given four strawberry lime coppers and then I was like well this is me now. You just have a grand old time >> just like I honestly feel like look I'm working. I have a bit of dollar like dollar bills. I'm not like but I don't know how students are doing it. Yeah.
>> It's just non-existent. Like I don't even think there's any student really nights anymore. You never see anything like that anymore.
>> I know. Maybe they are when I'm just old and I don't see them anymore. But like >> maybe that's why students aren't going out that much anymore cuz remember there's feel like the younger generation are more like healthy and >> health conscious. Yeah.
>> Yeah. But then they're also like, you know, I don't know like eating whole vapes and stuff. So I guess >> vaping in bed at 9:00 a.m.
>> I brought you the mood, didn't I? I'm so sorry.
>> No, no, you're right. Like there's a cost of the living crisis and a cost of drinking crisis, and one of those needs to be fixed >> immediately. Oh, yeah. Actually, I love the way the whole conversation actually turned to just go. [laughter] Like, >> but you're right. People can afford most things as well as discretionary things like pints. Like you might be like, "Oh, we don't need to go out." But like even if you wanted to, that's still Yeah.
>> And like I think like Ireland are such big drinkers because we can be quite a sad country at times, you know? So we like use it to numb ourselves a little bit. [laughter] >> It's like, "Oh, we can't even do that."
Like, so well, actually, why don't you just take the shirt off me back? Like, sorry. [laughter] I have this like metric in my head where I measure things in glasses of wine.
>> So like if I'm like if I'm trying to buy something and I'm justifying buying something to myself of like well you buy three glasses of wine no bother so buy it >> a month's rent.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. [laughter] I'm not going to pay my rent this month. I've got three glasses of wine to buy.
>> That's a fair metric. So some people might be like oh you can forgo that cup of coffee. You're like I'll forgo those three glasses of wine.
>> Yeah. My wallet and my liver thank me for it.
>> Yeah. [laughter] my vent and it's one I think we can all agree on.
>> It's people playing music on their phones on the bus. I think it's always been problem but I think post pandemic it's I think gotten worse. And I think that what's made it worse is Tik Tok.
It's not even people playing music on their phone and they're playing a whole song. It's people just scrolling through Tik Tok and you're just hearing like the the start of Yeah. You're just hearing like a here's my top 10.
you're just hearing like constant like two seconds of noise the whole time and you're just like oh my god like I understand whatever social media whatever is all rotted our brains but you don't need to brought the brain of everyone else around you as well you know I know I know we've just talked about cost of living crisis but like I think a pair of earphones aren't the most expensive things in the world that like you can you can get some cheapy10 earphones from like PC world or something what you do >> I don't think it's about the earphones though I think CO happened, everybody sat at home for a couple years and kind of just forgot how to behave in public.
>> Like it's it's just a level of like inconsiderate or something. I don't know what it is.
>> It's psychotic.
>> It's mad. And like it there's been a change in people's behavior since co.
It's really weird.
>> I remember I was on the bus a couple of weeks ago, a couple of months ago, and there was a couple sitting opposite me and right in front of them was a kid playing all of his Tik Toks on loud. He must have been about >> 11 or 12, I'd say. Yeah.
>> And the couple very politely leaned over and they were like, "Sorry, would you mind just like turning that down and putting your headphones on?" And he just looked and went, "No." [laughter] >> Kids, the kids these days, like honestly though, I'm like if I I would if as an adult now, if someone asked me to turn down my phone, I just throw it out the window. I'm [laughter] so embarrassed.
>> I would I'm so sorry. I'm getting off actually.
>> Would you want it actually? Yeah. Sorry.
>> Yeah. I'll get I'll just get another one. No. Have you ever been on the like say you maybe you thought your headphones were connected or something and you play something you just go like oh and and you immediately turn down like the shame that like washes over me when that happens. It's like have these people no shame.
>> Yeah. I think about it for weeks.
>> Yeah. Exactly.
>> You idiot.
>> Like do you remember those like drink driving ads years ago that was like never ever drink and drive. Could you live with the shame? We need those but for like people playing music. You know what I mean? You're like someone's like playing music and it's just it should have be a bunch of people being like, "Oh my god, absolutely scarlet for him."
Oh yeah, Jesus. Look at him. Bae is a small dick, too. And you know what I mean?
>> You know the wrong character skits. It it should be they should get him in and be like, "Why is he doing that? God, he's a weird and he's ugly, too. Why is he saying those things?
>> Why are you doing that for me?"
[laughter] >> Yeah. Why is he playing some of those tunes?
>> Yeah.
>> What about people on the phone?
>> Do you mean as in talking on the phone?
>> People having conversations.
>> Now, here's the thing for me would be like, "Oh, yeah. Sorry. Oh, I'm actually just about to get on a bus, so here I'll bring you back." Even though it's like you could in a way technically have a phone call, but I just like the idea.
I'm about to get on a bus with other people. So, actually I I I won't I I'll talk to you later. Wouldn't do that.
Also depends what you're talking about.
Do you know what I mean?
>> I don't talk on the bus.
>> Music annoys me in a way that listen to other people's conversations do not. My AirPods are like click pause and I'm like >> oh no. Phone calls annoy me more.
>> Really?
>> Yeah.
>> Oh no. What if it's Oh no. Music absolutely annoys me more cuz I feel like someone talking it's like they if they're talking on the phone they could have just been like it could have been two mates talking. Do you know what I mean? that in a way it doesn't bother.
Now it depends also if you're talking on the phone you're like >> if you're talking loud if you're just like oh actually yeah I have a few I have to do this and that but if you're literally just like yeah so anyway the doctor said it's malignant or whatever you know if you're talking like a like a loud volume or something >> that I could get on board with.
>> But like yeah if you're just having a conversation I'm like well you could have just been talking to the person beside you. They think that's okay. But like if it was two people and they're talking so loud I'd also be like okay that's egregious as well. Like >> we were yeah we were on the bus a couple weeks ago and me and my boyfriend were talking and he'd only like he wasn't really familiar with the area. So we were going past the bus and I was like that's a nightclub I used to go into and we were going past whatever and like just giving him a little tour and telling them all about it and this man in front of us turned around to join the conversation and he's like do you remember that nightclub blah blah but he was missing half an ear. [laughter] I was like how did he hear that now half or is that how you lost it now? Someone pulled it off for being [laughter] facetiming on the bus. Another cat of fish.
>> Yeah it's a bit weird. Yeah. And then you're just like in the back of it.
You're just like, "Okay, I'm like a background extra." And you're >> FaceTime. I had a woman beside me on the treadmill recently facetiming in the gym >> and I was like, now that's an Etica I've never experienced before. She was having a full on the treadmill walking in the chat.
>> Now it depends if it's angled, you know, against the wall or something and no one else in the background. But if you're literally just like, okay, you're like effectively just like filming other people in the gym by that little like that's mental.
>> I hate people. [laughter] >> But it's saying we're we were talking about like Yeah, just like postco people don't know how to act. I mean, at gigs as well, you know what I mean? You have people like, I don't know, you people with like ring lights in their phones and taking full things at concerts now where it's just like they're making content instead of seeing a gig or whatever. And here I I I've I go to many gigs. I love getting my like, you know, 10 seconds of the per whoever's on stage, but like I'm also not like, "Oh, let me get a full studio ring light and like blind everyone behind me who's also trying to watch the gig." Like um yeah, it's mental. Yeah. So, sorry. My vent is um everyone post pandemic sorry h before we are talking about the bus though the worst thing I've I didn't see this happen but I saw the aftermath is I went to sit on the seat and uh I'd looked down and there was just what I think are either fingernails or toenails just on the bus and I was like someone just giving themselves a full manny petty and just leaving them on the [ __ ] floor of the bus and I was like that's [ __ ] and disgusting.
>> Oh my god. Was there 10 of them?
>> I didn't go counting, but there was I say enough of them. There was enough of them that looked like a full set.
>> Oh my god. Oh my god. What? I've actually got to go like what what possesses somebody? I wouldn't do that in the house.
>> I'm like maybe sure if you nicked your hand, you went ding. But I don't think I'd be going and you're gonna crack out all 10 fingers and go go to town.
>> Oh my goodness.
>> Yeah. So there you go. And that was also post post pandemic. So just [ __ ] look after yourselves and [ __ ] stop wrecking other people's [ __ ] time.
>> I hope that there's like some sort of like societal study done on the universal psyche of the way people behave and we can be like, "Oh, what changed there?"
>> Like what what was it that people stopped caring about?
>> I haven't clue. There's defin there'll be something. Do you know? But it's like the type of people, you know, take their like shoes and socks off on a plane and stuff like that. Do you know what I mean? It's just like, do you know what you should do? You should get like 10 of those people that do all those repulsive things in public. Throw them into a house together and put on TV because watch Surely they can. They're so self-centered that they don't realize what they're doing, but surely they'll get triggered by each other.
>> It's like the traitors, but they're all traitors basically feelings. But yeah, what would you call it?
>> Something's in my head like scruff or like >> scruff. [laughter] Thank god I can cycle home. I'm like, are you getting the bus now?
>> Yeah. Oh yeah.
>> Well, I see toenails on that bus. I swear to God. Well, we're all getting the bus later, so who knows? I'm sure we can get all three of us back in and we'll have the three different vents about the bus. People are gross. There's any one takeaway from today's episode?
People are gross. [laughter] That does it for today's episode of the podcast. Guys, where can people find you? Justine, we'll start with you.
>> You can find me on Instagram at Justine Megan Comedy and on Tik Tok at the same thing.
