[00:00:12]It became one of the first towns in America governed by black citizens.

[00:00:16]Princeville [music] became a symbol of black independence, resilience, and survival. But Princeville sat near the Tar River, and devastating floods struck the town again and again. Then in 1999, Hurricane Floyd devastated Princeville.

[00:00:32]Many believed the town should disappear forever, but the people of Princeville [music] refused to die. Princeville still stands today, a symbol of black resilience, survival, and [music] determination.
