Cypress wood produces uniquely heavy and wet sawdust that clogs sawmill dust blowers more severely than other wood types like pine, oak, or maple, requiring operators to manually clear the system or use alternative methods like shoveling to maintain efficient operations.

We Hit a BIG Problem Sawing These High-Dollar Cypress Logs…Added:
What you doing this morning?
>> Getting everything cleaned up and ready to start the day.
>> Welcome back to the Wallace Farm and Sawmill, guys. Today we've got a little bit of a treat for you. We've been cleaning up around here from what we cut the other day. We're going to be cutting some cypress. What do you think about that, Miss Brit?
>> Cypress is probably one of the nicest woods that we uh grow around here.
>> It is one of the nicer woods, more of the more expensive woods. Yeah.
>> Um, like it's kind of like white oak and cypress. They're up there on the higher echelon of what we cut as far as expensiveness. However, this is just a customer's log. So, he's getting the flat rate of sawing. And I actually will saw that cheaper than I will saw white oak because it's not as hard to saw.
It's going to cut pretty quick and easy.
And we're just doing one by 12s, which is also another thing that we like to do. There's one problem, one major problem, Britney.
>> What is that?
>> Every log is 16 foot. We're cutting 16 foot one by 12s. I tried talking the customer out of it, but he was like he likes one by 12s and they're firing up a jet out there. That was loud.
>> That was super loud.
>> Anyway, these 1x2s are going to be a little bit difficult to handle cuz 1x12 at 16 ft, that's like a rubber band. You need to shake it and watch the wave. But anyway, >> luckily we have the bomaly.
>> We have the bomaly. And uh I'll probably just saw the whole stack down and then the two of us will pick up the stack and move it around. We'll have to do a lot of like moving lumber together on 16 ft stuff, but that's no problem. We've got it set up now to where we can do that.
Let's get a few things cleaned up and I've got to move the dump truck out of the way. I'm going to go show you what we picked up this weekend. I'm headed over to the dump truck. Going to show you guys. I helped my uh my friend out who's been helping me get some of my electrical stuff done. And uh he had these in his yard. he wanted to give me, but his tractor broke down a few months back and he couldn't get them out. So, I took the dump truck over there and got it all. So, we loaded up the excavator and the dump truck all in one row there.
And we went over there and got this like I don't know, probably three tons of these little jokers right here. These are gum, sweet gum logs. Sweet gum logs probably not the most valuable thing.
However, they can be used for certain things and cribbing is one of them. Ties is one of them. Um, we'll probably just use them to make some blocking, some dunage to set stuff on around here cuz a lot of them are just small. probably make some 4x4s and 6x six's and we need a lot of dunage because eventually this whole area right over here cleaning all that up there and uh that's where I'm going to start stockpiling some one by pine lumber that is getting ready to go into our next big build and uh I'm going to go ahead and let you guys know the next big build that's coming up is a solar kiln. I'm gonna build a solar kiln and Britney and I are gonna put it right over there so that it gets full sun.
That's actually happening this week.
Unbeknownst to you, I'm telling you now, that is what we're doing this week outside of this particular video because we have got to catch up and get one load of this cypress out of here. So hopefully we can take four or five of those big 16 ft logs today, turn them into 1x1 12s and get them ready to go.
We also have to stack and sticker those forewarning.
>> Great. So, probably just cut the stickers out of them, sticker them on the same material, and uh that'll be that. But this is in the way right now to get these 16 foot logs through here.
Let's go take the trailer off brit, then dump these logs out.
So, we got this side all cleaned up where you can pull the truck right on through here.
We've been parking the trailer right about there.
Oh, he's coming a little closer this time. Getting it on out of the way.
But this has made we cleaned this spot up and it's made a lot more space for us to park our trailers.
Look at him. He's doing something totally different this time.
Let's get this trailer off. Is off. Now, let's go find us a spot to dump these logs out. Really enjoyed having the trailer hooked up to the dump truck.
That way, we can just load the dump truck down and take the excavator with us all at the same time and we're not in two separate vehicles. Much better. So, we have a lot of people always asking in our comments about John and where he's at. But John has become a ROR. And although not all those who roam are lost, we don't want to take any chances with our John here. So, that's where the sponsor of today's video, Satellite, comes into play. So, let's go ahead and get it put on. Check it out, John. Your property is 30 acres and the satellite collar works effectively in open spaces ranging from 0.5 to 100,000 acres as long as there's signal coverage in your area. Now I don't have to worry if I turn John out in the yard to go roaming just a little bit because we'll always know exactly where he's at. Let me show you. That's why we started using the satellite collar. It's not just a GPS tracker. It actually lets you track your dog and set virtual boundaries and monitor your dog's health all at the same time. We can set up a virtual boundary right from our phone. That means no wires and no physical fence. So when Jon gets close to areas that we don't want him going, he gets feedback and starts learning his limits. Even out here, the signal's been really solid, which is a big deal on a farm like this.
It claims to cover the networks of most major US carriers, even offering broader coverage than some of the well-known brands that you've probably heard of.
So, this is one of my favorite parts.
You can even see John moving in real time. When choosing the boundary, I wanted him to have a big enough space where he could move his legs, but not too big so he wouldn't get too far away.
The batter has been holding up really well, even with the full days of use.
So, I noticed on John's satellite collar that he has been going to a certain spot every day. Let me show you. Right over here behind the new building is a nice shady spot.
And he has been hanging out right here in the cool shade. We found your spot, bud. So, if you have dogs on the farm like we do, John is our protector of our chickens and of our goats and our cats.
He is a big baby. He loves everything.
And I do like giving him some freedom to run around. And satellite gives me the confidence of knowing that I know where he's at all times when he is out doing his roaming. But my favorite part of the whole thing is I can set a boundary to know exactly how far he can go and it'll let him know that he's not supposed to go any farther than that.
So, if you guys want to check out the satellite collar, I will leave a link in the description below. And you can also use our code Wallace for an extra $100 off. That's a really good deal.
Dumped out right here. But these three logs right there are the logs that we got from our place behind here on out through there. As you can see in the last video where we've been out there cleaning up a little bit.
Let's see how these logs are going to slip on out.
Nice. Go ahead and get the dump truck parked somewhere out of the way. These are actually the logs that we are going to be working with today. Britney is doing a little cleanup, moving these little ends we cut off the other day so we can get over here and get these logs first out of the way.
So, the Bumbleite mini skid steer actually comes in handy.
every day. Like so many tasks can be done by that thing. It's crazy. And uh does really exceptionally well at handling small short stuff like that where these forks over here on this tractor and seeing them and getting to the small stuff, it's a lot harder. It's really easy to see them on that thing.
And uh but it also will handle a big log. So I like that about it.
now that big white oak might be asking a lot. So, going to go grab the tractor for that. Also, check this out. We noticed that's an insulator and that's an insulator. They're both stuck down in there and it's growing up. So they're probably down in there four plus in to block off that end of the log or dig down in there and get them out somehow.
I'd see what the customer wants to do there, guys. cuz I don't like to uh just take the forks and get it up high and get it to roll in hard and fast. If you do that, knocks the meal all around. And we don't have this one bolted down. So, don't like doing that.
I prefer if we find the can hook and roll it up here nice and smooth.
>> That's a massive log.
>> Log was just really heavy to start with.
So even rolling it off there.
Yeah, I could tell it was heavy. But a 16 ft. It's positioned great on the mill for sawing right now. That's a good thing.
>> Nice when you roll the log off and it's right in position, ready to cut.
>> So, we got the log all up there. I've lined it up for the first cut. Shooting to open up a face cut of about 6 in. But before we get started cutting, Brit, what you want to tell them?
>> Uh, I was just sitting in this chair and I looked down at my shoes and I thought, these Brunt Boots have they're hanging in there, buddy. They have been some of the best shoes that I have ever had. I also have on my brunt shades that I got from their website, guys. She's wearing the Marin. Believe you have the soft toes on, don't you?
>> Yep. These are the soft toes.
>> They are the soft toes. But they have been protecting her feet here on the farm, keeping her dry. And man, I'm just thinking right now in my head, that's why I had to stop there for a second. You getting close to a year, eight or 10 months out of those right now.
>> Almost a year.
>> And uh still waterproof.
>> Still waterproof.
>> Still waterproof. Still working. The crazy thing about these shoes is they keep you warm in the winter time, but still in the summertime, my feet don't sweat. So, >> they breathe good. It's the magic that they use when they make these. Like I said, if you guys are interested in any of Brunt Workware's attire, glasses, they got it all there. Check out the link in the description below. All of their materials that we have used thus far have held up wonderfully and great.
Their shirts, I like them. They breathe really well. Check them out. The boots are absolute perfect. Britney is in love with the Marin soft toes right there.
And uh like I said, check the link in the description below.

So, when sawing cyprus, there's one very bad thing that you have to deal with.
And all that fuzz that is on the log or on the bark will come in here and will clog this chute up over and over. So, like look at this.
Here's a piece of bark.
See how furry that is? That's what caused it to clog. So, we'll be picking this out 30 times today.

Well, we ended up getting the log squared up to 12 in wide and we got to go all the way down through here. Now, we are doing some plain saw lumber. So, two options here in my way of thinking would be to leave it all on there cuz I think we'll have the head clearance to get every bit we need above it. Um, if we do have to take some off or whatever, sometimes it's best to saw down about halfway, then flip the can all the way over and then saw down to the bottom so that you relieve the stress off each side uh individually, you know, so it doesn't bow away. But if you can leave all the weight on there and let it all hold itself down. Sometimes you can get away with just sawing straight through.
Probably going to just saw straight through here, it's going to be fine. All this lumber is oversized. It's uh it's being sewn at an inch, a full inch. And uh it's going to end up being plain down to 3/4. So I think it's going to work out good. Uh going to show you the grain here in just a little bit on some of this stuff. But before we do, let's get this can cut down all the way into 1x12 lumber. So guys, this is where I was telling you that a little chair would come into uh you know, being in handy because we're going to saw through all this and take it all off at once with the tractor. So, so here's sol Heat.
Heat.
Brit's going to go dump those slabs off.
We're going to pick up this whole stack at one time.
Get these all edged out before we take the whole stack over there to stack it all. We just stack it all together.
Heat.

So, we got all the lumber over here.
We're going to go ahead and get it stacked and stickered.
those all stacked and stickered. Tyler's counting them now.
>> 13 1x 12 x 16s and 13 or six 1x8s. So, >> that's a nice stack.
>> I'm going figure up the math real quick on that. Looks like we are just going to take us a little drink of water and do that about four or five more times here this afternoon. Uh those uh particular that particular log made 272 board feet of lumber.
>> It's nice.
>> So yeah, that was a lot cuz I like to put about 500 board foot to a pack.
Tractor handles it well. Um yeah, so that's a lot of lumber.
>> The only good thing about the 16 ft is that it does add up quick. It does add up quick because once you're sawing it, you're basically sawing two eightfooters in one row. So, your footage adds up quick. And when you're sawing for the board foot like we are here in this situation, hey, 272 board feet took us like, I don't know, 30 minutes to saw that. You know, it actually takes a little bit longer setting up the camera and all that, doing all that stuff versus just straight up sawing and not doing that. So, >> um, yeah, we probably could cut >> in one by 12s. I'd say we cut about 500 to 600 board foot an hour if we wanted to with our current setup. It would be better if we had some things set up and we didn't have to edge on the mill and everything. But anyway, we're going to go now and we're going to cut a bunch more of these. Probably going to throw this thing over on a time lapse. Join you in the in the end and we're going to show you what we get put together here.
Well, we're getting quite the stack here, but I want to show you some of the actual grain so you get an idea what cyprus looks like.
It's pretty.
It's nice wood. And back at it to do it again. Here we go.
Well, we're back at it this morning.
I've been back out on the land clearing.
Now I'm back over at the sawmill.
But I did want to interject here, let you guys know that we've ran into one seriously major issue in saw in this Cyprus.
Do you know the major issue?
>> I don't. Oh, you're talking about the blower.
>> So, I talked with a buddy of mine last night, and this has not been something I've had to deal with in the past, but then again, I thought about it. I don't know that I had a blower the last time I was sawing Cypress.
>> It's been a while. It has been a while.
But anyway, I think I was sawing cypress. The last time I saw cypress logs to any serious amount, I think I was on the LT15. So, I know I didn't have a blower then. That system cannot handle cypress sawdust. Cypress sawdust.
I would have to show you. I had to clear it out like three times yesterday. If you look at the time lapse, you probably could see me going in and clearing the system out. But the sawdust is so heavy and so wet. And those logs, I mean, they are fresh failed, but normally sawing greens the ticket. But anyway, you can grab the saw to squeeze it like play-doh and it will hold the shape.
>> It's like a ball and then it gets stuck in the blower fan and just will not work.
>> Yeah. We're not talking about like I did at one point show the bark and all that clogging up. No, no, no, no. The sawdust itself is problematic. I don't if I have too much of a trouble with it today cuz I think there's probably 4,000 ft of lumber we got to saw. I saw 1,000 foot yesterday. We saw 1,000 foot yesterday.
But >> I think if it starts clogging up today, I'm going to unhook the hose, knock it out of the way, and just shovel it because >> I'm not having any trouble with this system in pine, oak, maple, uh we've done um cherry, we've done hickory, I've done ash. Yeah, >> on this system like lately like no issues, >> but that cypress just won't it don't function through that. I don't know. You may have to have a lot bigger one to handle that or maybe any of them wouldn't. It may just clog them all up.
I don't know. But yeah, that was the one major issue. We are uh winding down on video and all this. We probably have a lot of video of cutting cypress at this point. But I did want to mention that that major issue did come up and uh it's it's been a problem. Man, this next log up is an absolute massive monster. It's over 16 foot long and about 25 inches on this end right here. So, this is just it was quite heavy bringing and putting it on the mill. Well, back to sawing. We got to add up to the list and hopefully try to get out I don't know a couple thousand ft this week for that guy specifically. Uh again, I think there's probably 4,000 ft total here.
And there is another one cut up and another one for the pile. I think we're going to go and stack this one. We're nearing at like day and a half uh of sawing. We're nearing the 2,000 board foot mark. So that's a lot of lumber we've been sawing.
>> A ton of lumber.
>> And I think I just realized after looking at the log pile, we at least have that much again to go. So my estimation somewhere in the beginning was 3 4,000 ft over there. I think it's what I thought it was. And there's at least it's at least 4,000 ft of those boards over there. So um yeah, this this stuff has been a challenge in the fact that the blower just it just gums up. I don't know. I've never had that happen with my blower system.
on pine or oak or anything, but it it couldn't handle it. So, we decided to just unhook the hose and get the shovel out in the meantime because we were going to just be stuck with slowly clearing the system every so often. So, I was like, you know what? We're on Cyprus. We'll just shovel this one. That is going to do it for today's video, guys. Hope you guys are enjoying this.
This one had a lot of sawmill content in it. And we had a comment in our last video that when are we going to do some more sawmilling? So, hope you got hope you got your feel right here.
>> We've been doing a lot.
>> I'm just kidding. We did get our feel in in this particular one because we're just sawing a lot of it. Chair is coming in extra handy for this because like I said, once you get to a certain point, Britney would get right over here and sit on the end of this beside me and we would spend the next six or seven minutes just making pass pass cuz we're going to use the tractor to go unload this all at one time right into the stack.
