Deep-sea swellsharks (Cephaloscyllium isabella) living nearly 4 miles underwater in the Tonga Trench exhibit synchronized body inflation across multiple kilometers in complete darkness, a behavior scientists captured on pressure cameras but cannot yet explain, as the sharks cannot see each other and no known communication method accounts for this coordination.

Deep-Sea Sharks Are Communicating in the DarkAñadido:
Scientists just discovered that deep-sea swell sharks living nearly 4 miles underwater are inflating their bodies in perfect sync with each other across multiple kilometers, and nobody knows why. Meet Cephaloscyllium isabella, a bizarre creature pulled from the Tonga Trench at depths of 18,300 ft. When threatened, this shark does something wild. It sucks seawater into its body cavity and inflates like a balloon until its skin stretches so thin you can see its organs right through it.
Researchers thought this was just a defense mechanism against predators, but then they deployed long-term pressure cameras across the sharks' known habitat and discovered something that completely changed everything. Every single swell shark in the area was inflating at exactly the same time, perfectly synchronized across several kilometers of ocean floor in complete darkness.
>> [music] >> These animals can't see each other.
There's no light down there. Yet somehow, they're moving together like they're part of an orchestra.
They're all inflating and deflating on the same rhythm night after night. It suggests these sharks are communicating with each other in ways we don't understand yet. Maybe pressure waves, maybe chemical signals in the water, maybe something we haven't even imagined. The deep ocean is still keeping its secrets.
