LIVE STORM CHASER- Severe Thunderstorms in Southern MichiganAdded:
Hi everybody.
We're getting started.
We got a line of severe thunderstorms making its way through about to hit St. Joe County.
Chase. Chasing has begun. We've got a little SE coming right in front of us right here about to pass over the Athens, Michigan area. Um, packing a lot of lightning, exhibiting a little bit of rotation on the southern flank as well. It's coming right towards me. So, I'm going to keep an eye on this one. Um, I don't expect it to do anything significant, but we're going to kind of follow its tail end through Athens and up towards uh Battle Creek Lancing. Um, we've got some warnings going out for 60 m observed 60 mile per hour wind gusts right now with these storms. A 63 mile per hour wind gust was reported with these storms as they um came into Benton Harbor. So, these storms do have some damaging winds on them. Widespread severe thunderstorm warnings across southwestern Michigan.
We are live on YouTube, Facebook, and we're also with Michigan Stormchasers, who is covering this event today.
Closely monitoring right now.
Making sure everything is running correctly because I just I just got out for this.
All right, we are rolling and we are live.
We're going to cover these for a good distance this afternoon.
We've got some equipment kind of making its way through as well.
My car is dirtier than anything, which is fine when I'm on dirt road right now. We got a tractor coming through.
Get Woodstock off the dash.
It's a ditch mower.
All right, I'm checking radar with the with this cell.
>> Just a few prefrontal clusters here.
Not really looking too too exciting as of now.
This is going to get its act together because it's moving into an environment of 1100 downdraft cape. So that's part of the reason why there's concern here.
It's primarily damaging wind threat today. Going to be a windbag type of day.
We'll be following these storms east.
These storms are moving northeast at 55 miles per hour. Moving in at the northeastward rate, meaning we can probably keep up with it, especially on that southern flank, which is now widespread severe warned across Indiana all the way down towards Wabash, Warsaw.
So, it's going to be kind of an active day today for chasing.
Got the road commission out here doing some work on the dirt roads.
Make sure my stream's hot. Working.
Make sure it's working here on MSC.
Okay.
Sweet.
Yeah, this >> considerable severe thunderstorm warning for Alagan County.
>> Real quick here, there's a little bit of a notch on Dam Road.
>> These storms could produce wind gusts of 70 mph or greater today, which is why >> these are a bit I'm a bit more apt to chase this this wind bag today, mainly because of that.
Hello to Raffle Bike05, Jazz, Danny, um, Blanca Howard.
My chat's not working on my live feed, so I won't be able to check it too often, but we're going to make our way towards Athens and then we're going to get back on the storm. I want to fill up with gas and clean my windshield, but these storms are coming right for us. So, we'll be in we'll be on tap to to intercept.
We're going to kind of file these the whole way.
I got to clean my window.
But these prefrontal clusters are getting close to me and I'm going to follow these as the line the main line makes its way in.
It's kind of nice that I know the roads around here.
That's a benefit.
Yep. Damage threat considerable with these storms to the north.
That's expected. These are going to be some gusty winds today.
It's kind of like the gusty winds we had a couple weeks ago with the exception that there's actually lightning.
Where's my other dash mount cuz I need it.
I want it.
There it is. Ah, stay up.
Sorry this guys. This is bumpy road.
get to Athens to fill up with gas before I get on these The prefrontals in St. Joe County have got some lightning attached to them and they are exhibiting some light rotation.
I don't expect them to do anything tornatic.
Oh, that's a big pothole. What is this road? It's a Michigan road. That's right. I forgot. Didn't click. Okay, we're fine.
line up on radar. I take it back.
Uh, it kind of does, but we'll get on it right after we get gas.
And we're getting on this cell in Colen Leonidis area heading towards this is heading this storm is heading towards Factoryville. So, you'll see some pretty neat structure on this guy in then we'll follow it along M60. That's a plan. We've got a plan. Execute.
Oh, these these road workers are going to soon to get a little wet.
But they're repaving the road.
I'm going to be first one on the new road.
All right, turn left.
Okay, at least gas is a little cheaper here.
All right, I got to get gas real quick.
Sit tight. I got to get gas.
Was it just was it for this cell that is to her southwest? Because I am curious.
All right, that's it.
All right, we're rolling.
All right, here we go. Let's get out of here.
We're locking in M60 to go.
Yep. I'm definitely I don't think it's going to do anything, but it does have rotation on the look.
Definitely worth investigating.
It's got a little uh over Okay.
Right.
Yep. I see it. Got a base.
I'm going to pull off.
I've got eyes on the cell.
This is overly honest.
See right there.
Yep. You're some inflow, but the wind is blowing this direction with it. So, it's not really uh unless the inflow is following along with it.
We're off the road. We're We're safe here.
But you can see that guys, right? Look at that motion. I don't think it's going to do anything.
Rain's going to pick up in just a second.
Got the core of it right there. See where the heaviest priest is falling right there. Rain's picking up a little more here. Great. Watch my car. I need it.
I'm getting a wash.
Whatever's happening in this guys is right here.
Got rising motion on the left side there.
Might have a forming shelf cloud right here. And it might be rotating a little bit.
Trying to get a good eye.
Could be a downverse forming right here, too.
Could have some strong winds on that.
It's going to merge with the line behind it in just in a little bit cuz that line's moving faster than this thing.
You got good rising motion on these scud clouds here.
And again, the air is flowing into the storm there. Warm moist air flowing in.
It's coming in fast towards me.
Can hear the thunder.
Woo! Look how fast that's rising into that.
Yeah, it's getting lower here.
And it's rotating. That's rotating.
What are we doing?
That cloud is spinning.
It's going to pass to my north.
But I think it's forming into a shelf. I think that's what we got happening here.
Except you do see that counterclockwise motion on that, but it's drifting this direction.
I think it's just a forming shelf.
See the rain the rain shield behind this storms are blowing in. There's the rain right there.
This is moving at 55 miles per hour.
We're going to have to blast east in a minute.
But man, this is beautiful.
We'll get a gauge on how these winds are as the shelf passes through.
There's a bunch of rising with this. So that main piece is moving to my north.
Just like I said, that main feature right there. See how See how it's kind of wrapping right there?
Clouds are weird, but they're pretty stinking cool.
We got a nice shelf up right here. Very nice.
Low hanging cloud kind of settling over Athens with the gusty winds picking up again. And there could be 60 mph winds.
Some places will have embedded gusts of 70 mph.
Oh, here it comes. Oh, that's why it smells bad. There's roadkill right there. Okay.
Woo. Feel the cool rain. Cool air. I can feel it.
Wow. It feels so much cool. The temperature just dropped rapidly right here.
Cool air backside.
It just it changed so quickly.
All right, let's move. Stick with it.
That was a rapid change of temp.
All right, we're going to get east, go northeast towards Burlington. We're kind of in line with this cell as it begins to merge with the line behind it. New considerable severe warning for Hastings. 80 mile per hour winds being observed now. That's significant.
You got to take cover if you're in uh Hastings, Door, Grand Rapids, Kentwood.
Right now, the current warning for this area is 60 mph winds. However, this line is organizing with that the rotation with this cell here. Again, it's weak. I'm not expecting tornadoes today, but you can see the motion in the clouds is pretty still pretty sweet.
Very gusty winds up in Grand Rapids up to 80 mph in some spots.
All right, we got to go north. Where am I?
Where'd it go?
In the air. Oopsie.
Right here. It's right here. Okay, there you go.
Yeah, there's a lot of lightning on this cell though out here.
We got severe thunderstorm warnings on this line going all the way down to Fort Wayne.
80 mile per hour winds is not to play around with in uh Door uh Wayland.
That's significant guys, Cutlerville, Kentwood.
That's heading your way. If you're on the nor, particularly if you're on the northern side of that warning, you need to take cover.
All right, we can see the main feature of this storm again.
It's shelfing out. That's what we got happening here.
these these storms will merge with the line behind it soon.
Man, that is beautiful.
We just passed the place where the Union City F3 went through.
Yeah, this thing's shelfing.
It's a shelfie.
Sturgeis is about to get hit by this severe thunderstorm. N Ottawa Oh yeah, that's gorgeous.
We're in Union City now. Look at that, guys.
This thing's taking in the warm, moist air.
There's really not enough spin in the atmosphere to do anything significant in terms of tornado damage, but straight line wind damage is definitely on the table today.
There's likely going to be a good deal of damage in um southwest northeast Alagan southwest Kent northern Ionia count northern Ionia.
Sorry, Barry.
Need to get my places right.
Got a new got into some new rising motion on the left side there.
Bet you that's got a gorgeous shelf in Sturgis right now. Structure day.
The colon cell now has a high top on it.
Storm is moving pretty quick. We're probably going to drop south on this line forming in uh it's going to head towards Cold Water soon. We'll probably get on 69 and blast south a little bit.
cuz the stuff up here, although it's producing considerable severe winds in uh portions of southern lower Michigan, that ne that line down there is something we can catch up to better and will be easier to see across portions of southern uh southern Michigan.
So, I'll probably do that pretty quick.
This is a pretty storm though.
Yoohoo.
Heat.
Heat.
Wonder what it's like over in uh Kent right now. I'm going to take a look at the MSSE stream.
detail.
Please any Capital County.
The weather sounded in less than 5 seconds when the recording was so highly recommend.
We have Sherwood, Baroque, Factoryville.
Oh my goodness. I I was crashing out there for a minute, but we're back.
Spring Arbor. I need to drop south when I get towards Oh my apparently.
Austin, I have your camera. Is anybody else chasing? Let me know.
>> I plan to chase. I'm moved up here so that I can get a good road network.
We're back.
We're still chasing. We're in Concord.
We got to get to Spring Arbor. Get north. Get on one. Get on 94.
Need to find some open fields. We got a big shelf foreman.
Nice thing is that it turns into a highway. M60 does. And merges with 94 and goes right by passing Jackson. All right, good. We're cutting through Spring Arbor then.
Oh, that was stressful. Okay.
But we are back.
Are we good, boys?
Officer Fowler, St. John's Dubler, St. John Oh, that shelf is beautiful. Woohoo.
All right, let's see if we can find a field air a field area near Spring Arbor so we can have a look.
Unimpeded view is what I want.
All right, stay on my window. There we go. Woo!
There's your selfie.
Shelf clouded view.
Heat up here.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Got a nice cumulo nimbus forming right in front of me here in Jack that's over Jackson. But you can see the shelf cloud with this line of storms that is progressing um through or progressing right towards Jackson C Jackson right now.
There's your cloud.
It's nice towering cumulus forming right out in front of me.
It's beautiful. We got an got a beautiful base. You can see it right here.
The winds on that line heading into Lancing are destructive.
Particularly dangerous situation unfolding there.
Look at that cloud. It's beautiful.
Beautiful there.
All right, we're approaching Spring Arbor.
Spring Arbor University.
I considered college here once, but I didn't go.
There you have their clock tower.
We're staying ahead of this. We're going to get on a northward facing road in a minute and you'll get a good look at that shelf cuz then it's going to merge right onto I94 and then we're going to keep blasting east. We'll chase this all the way to Ann Arbor.
Still got the shelf peeking out there a little bit. There's now rain falling with this with this little cell that popped up right here. You can see the preip beneath it.
It was forming and now it's starting to drop some rain out ahead of it. Might have some downburst winds with it.
That's over Jackson right now.
This storm is catching up with us. We got to hurry. It's right The shelf is right on our six, guys.
It's right behind us this storm. Once we get on the highway, we'll we'll outrun it. But we're not going to be able to outrun it on out in town like this.
7 m 94.
Observe 70 mile per hour winds with this coming through.
Moving northeast at 55 miles per hour.
All right, we're back out in the country roads and then it's going to turn to a two-lane in Jackson, so we'll be just fine.
All right, we're moving on a northeastward track. Get a look about behind.
You see the shelf? Very nice defined shelf now.
Oh yeah, we'll get out ahead of it now.
Just cut through Quincy.
Oh.
See, my plan was to originally go south, but I didn't because my stream went down and I was trying to figure out what to do. So, I just kept on going east. So, now we're following this kind of northbound instead.
Heat. Heat.
In just a minute, we'll be turning northward um on a two lane. You'll see at the shelf then we just got to get there.
It's going to open up in just a second.
All right, it's opening up into a two lane now. It's going to turn northward towards well the north.
All right, we're turning north. All right, we are northbound. It's pretty tree covered, but you can get any views, you'll get them.
Oh, okay. Okay. Go ahead. Go ahead, buddy.
All right. We're going to get clearing up here. You'll see the shelf in just a second.
Oh yeah. Look at that. Look at it.
Woo.
There she is.
There she is, y'all.
Right by the airport right now. Right by Jackson Airport.
>> All right, let's keep going.
We're getting to Detroit.
Oh boy. Oh buddy. That's a big shelfie right there. That is a big boy shelfie.
We're going to follow it.
All right, we're moving.
We're going to follow this exit by exit after we get through Jackson.
We're not pulling off at all in Jackson.
New severe warning countywide for that includes Adrian, Blissfield, areas like that.
Heat.
Heat.
Lots of lightning. We might head south towards Adrian, honestly, once we get off the highway.
There's a lot of lightning on the southern southern fringe of this.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
and I got to make a decision here.
I could go south.
Have me a little bit more advantage on these southern county spots.
Yeah, I'm going to go south.
Yep. We're going to get on 127 southbound here up ahead.
All right.
We're going south.
Oh.
That's That's going to stop happening.
My word, that suction cup ain't a good one.
That's all I'm saying.
Doesn't hold for too long.
A lot of people getting off here.
That's going to be fun.
I'm doing this as a hope to uh get past the uh crazier traffic.
So, if I cut south towards Addison and then take 223.
Oh, yeah. We're going to 223.
Yep. We got to get to 223. So, we've got to keep going south. Storm is to our right to our right here.
We're going to try and blast south to get to the other part of the line.
We're definitely getting past these trucks cuz they will slow us down on 127. That's for sure.
They're holding some heavy equipment on this thing.
You might get a view of the shelf here.
We're turning.
Not really. There's trees in the way.
We're going to try and get south as quickly as we can in hopes that we can stay ahead of these things and get in a better open area.
Retro row raggy.
I don't know if I'm going to be able to outrun it, but we'll find out.
I'm going to try I think I can do it.
I think we can do it. We're going to try.
Let's try not run this puppy. There's your shelf. Yeeha.
Heat. Heat.
All right, let's see if we can get to Adrian before or let's see if we can get Yeah, we're heading towards Adrien. Got Some pretty prefrontal clouds forming right here. We got two cells actually popping up right here. Might get a bolt.
Heat. Heat.
All right, things are starting to open up.
There it is. See how it's starting to retreat? The storms further west are starting to storms are starting to retreat further back westward as you go south, which is why we're heading south.
If we get south and we get to 223, we are golden for the rest of the chase as long as we stay ahead of this line.
All right, let's see if we can get you back on there and not have you fall there.
All right, we are going to switch my cameras over real quick.
I got to let my phone cool down. Won't be gone for too long, everybody.
There's some too.
All right, the shelf cloud should be on that eastward view cam right now.
We'll see if it We'll see if it ever pops out.
Oh yeah. Look at that.
Gorgeous.
Sometimes gives us a big commercial test to see DT.
is ready to handle.
>> Oh, >> that was a stone.
is coming soon.
You guys have been tuning in today taking that extra initiative to find out the entire state, but currently it's at 127 down towards the Hillsdale County areas specifically also just prefrontal cells.
>> [clears throat] >> out and about today. So, Wake County, you guys have been cancelled before does continue and is also going to sell heading up in Adrian there is dark out there.
Never right now.
mention the same pressure.
has not right now.
Jackson, thanks very strong.
All right, buddy. Have fun.
Heat. Heat.
Woo!
That is a pretty storm.
each.
exactly to the north.
Good.
>> Yeah. So, they are going All right, let's look at maps real quick.
Where are we going to go?
>> South towards Addison actually looks pretty good.
Yeah, let's get down to Addison.
Filipino just north of downtown. I would not be surprised if the do issue to the south and again lower. You don't have much action not going right now to alone high school in Paragan counties but this may fill in as the afternoon moves on. You can see a short view pop up by around 5 to 6 p.m.
Here going back to the Get that Heat.
Heat.

as you can see here in the grand I'm guessing this is Addison.
>> Not yet. Once we get the views will be much better.
75.
All right. So, this is Addison. Now, I need to figure out where I want to go now that we're in field areas.
boxes red out.
>> There's the edge of your shelf. This is not the strongest part of the storm. It looks like as well.
Everywhere you go, no matter where, no matter when.
>> Dollar General is 60 m radar.
So they just didn't trip the whole area network but there's a reduced inside this orange box because it is taking a little bit longer to exit and Jackson County Here comes the outflow. We got gusty winds.
Look at those turbines.
>> Turbines are cranking.
There's a straight shot road coming up that we'll take that will hopefully beat this line.
600 16 looks like the shorts down All right, we're almost start road then we'll turn that road 66 miles See the gusty winds on that tree right there to our left?
>> Gusty winds still happening here.
>> Oh, very gusty winds, huh?

a tiny little gap over the surface and the radar just can't move up because it is just over here.
Our time right now just hit the 4:00 hour. We're live interchange TV and Tik Tok and Stormchasers top screen.
You're supposed to come southwest.
He's mowing his yard, bro.
>> What a guy.

state of Michigan.
Washington County is a gap right now surrounded by a bunch of severe winds.
Looking at our velocity once again here, our wind radar. The wind is now how is up next. We also have a decent shot of the storms as they move into How. I'm going to see if I can switch over my camera real quick.
Switch my video source.
I remember how I do. It's been such a long time since I've actually had to switch my video source over here.
One second.
Share my screen. Sc screen. Share.
And it actually will not let me share my camera. That's unfortunate. They want to show the shelf cloud moving into uh the Howland area, but it will not let me.
That's a sign of some gusty winds moving into Howell. In fact, we take a zoomed in look at some of the pixels here. I am seeing 70 to 73 mph pixels right here on Fowlerville Road.
The road near Leighton Road. This is traveling right down 96 towards downtown Howell.
and maybe they will upgrade their warning to consider seeing the time.
That is quite the pocket of wind there in Fville area. Let us know what you guys are seeing once we're here in terms of the wind out there. And of course, if you have any tree damage, please send that in immediately. Um there's multiple ways you can do this. I'll go ahead and briefly real quick since there's a lot of wind damage coming in out there across the state. Again, we are on Facebook, Michigan Stormchasers. Feel free to post any of our photos and any one of our posts besides the live stream. We'll be able to see it if it's in the live stream.
>> Whoa.
>> Additionally, we have our messenger open. Please only use that for damage reports and please do not ask us questions about timing and whatnot. We are tracking the storms.
>> I've got dust here.
>> Messenger.
>> Big dust is getting kicked up right here. Strong wind.
>> Also on Facebook, we do have a community page called Michigan Storm or >> Holy Reports. You can join that community and submit your Whoa.
I'm so sorry.
I need to pull off the >> mine is showed you guys that how c can there for a brief second. That was the >> I got a strong down burst here.
>> And there we go. Washington is finally getting a new severe warning.
>> All I've done the past 5 minutes, 10 minutes is just post warnings. This is one way one other.
>> Oh yeah. All these orange boxes you see on your screen right now are severe thunderstorm warnings. There's about 15 or so counties in a severe thunderstorm warning. Now show you this is a widespread event across the state.
>> Wow. Oh my word.

All right, I'm probably losing connection.
I do hope that was recording though when that happened.
All right. Good.

All right.

Correct.
[clears throat] up here.
Wow.
That was weird.
Well, we're going to turn around here.
Let me let me just mention something.
The storm was severe warned, which is the which was the correct warning for this storm. My guess is that was just a wasn't really in a position to where there was a tornatic signature with it.
Um, that's my that's my thought. So, it's definitely I mean it definitely is a uh it's weird, but it was not a tornado.
I don't believe that was a tornado in the slightest right now.
Really?
That spooked me.
tree was going to fall down. I was like that was but it didn't.
That was an experience.
>> [music] >> What happened?
Heat.
Well, I'm hoping the sun peaks out back here a little bit.
Let me check.
It really doesn't that much, but team. Other locations impacted by these severe thunderstorms include Goodland Township, Burnside, Adica, Elba, Kings Mill, Silverwood, and Thornville.
on the most building has once again a considerable speed for 70 mph winds and that is all hail is less than any sized human nature and we do apologize for the live cutting out again we did power and internet twice today with our area welcome back in if you are just tuning I am currently on generator backup closing stream and at some point we are actually going to need to refill my generator soon. So at some point we may need to have Chandler take advisor in operations because I need to Yeah. Heat.
Wow, that was interesting.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. All right, it's time to plot a course back home.
Heat. Heat.
Dad. That was just so weird.
But anyway, >> [music] >> Heat. Heat.
Also looking at sag and shasure warnings guys are Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
[music] And the next stop sign. Turn right.
Heat. Heat.
Especially if you know someone that is out of this line >> in about 1 and a half miles. Keep left.
>> All right, guys. I think it's time to shut down.
We're here. We're fine.
So, thanks.
Things actually pop up, but right now it doesn't look like things are going to be too interesting. So, um, >> yep. We'll see what happens. Thanks again,
