Hottest Weather of the Year Arrives This Week

[00:00:00]All right, now with meteorologist Steve Pierce. We've been worried about the heat all afternoon and evening. We just got some new information.

[00:00:06]>> My fingers are burning up. I was typing over there in the weather center. Uh yeah, I got latest ma uh model data just came in, Joey. I'm cons not concerned.

[00:00:15]Uh we got a pretty significant heat wave coming. This is going to be the warmest weather yet of this uh summer on the way. It's not going to be a long duration event, but we've got a couple of days that are going to be 95 to 100 coming up. I'll get to that here in just a second. This is a spot where you're going to want to cool off this week. And this is very typical this time of the year. Fog and low clouds pushed up against the beaches this evening.

[00:00:38]Seesaw. You see a few bonfires out there on the beach. Nice and cool down there.

[00:00:42]Temperatures in the 50s. Here's a sign that we're warming up already in Portland tonight. We're way up above where we were this time last night. 73°.

[00:00:49]Subaru Portland camera on top of the coin tower. Notice those overnight temperatures real slow to cool off as that ridge of high pressure continues to build over us. And we've got these high clouds streaming in over the top of us that came up from the southeast this evening associated with some monsunala moisture and remnants of a uh tropical cyclone down off the coast of Baja California. Tropical storm I should say and that'll continue to push up over the area coming up over the next 24 to 48 hours. All right, daytime highs today 85s at Vancouver. Portland average is 83. So that's two degrees above average.

[00:01:24]60s along the coast. Warmer as you go south in the valley. Salem 88 and Eugene 89. Corvalis 89 or Eugene 88. All right, central and east side of the state.

[00:01:34]That's where the hot stuff always is this time of the year in the mid 90s.

[00:01:37]Still right in the lower 70s here in the metro area at 11:00. 50s along the coast with the fog and low clouds. Uh it's about 6° above where we were this time last night in the metro area and warmer than that over in central Oregon, Madress and Ben at 7°. All right, Monday morning get you out the door on your way back to work. Start of the new work week. Mostly sunny skies. We're going to have filtered sunshine tomorrow. We'll call it. A lot of those high clouds like we had today will be uh present tomorrow and again on Tuesday. But notice those temperatures significantly warmer. We're going to be up around 90 for daytime high tomorrow. All right. Normal daytime high in Portland this time of the year, 83 degrees. There's your uh upper 80s there about a week ago. Then that cool day with those thunderstorms last Thursday on the 16th just 67. But we are headed up in a big way. About 30 degrees over where we were last Thursday.

[00:02:29]Rainfall, I don't see any coming over the next 10 days with the exception of perhaps an isolated shower or thunderstorm uh about a week from when we had it last week on Thursday as we kind of transition out of this heat.

[00:02:42]Now, why is all this happening? Well, this big upper level ridge of high pressure over the desert southwest, which is usually there this time of the year, nudges a little closer to the Pacific Northwest. that last night it was staying over there in the mountain west. Tonight it's moving in closer.

[00:02:56]This is on Tuesday and Wednesday would be the peak of the heat before a trough sets up off the coast, pushes a little more marine air in later in the week and cools us off back into the 80s. There's those high clouds you see Monday and again on Tuesday. This model tends to overdo a lot of this. You're still going to see lots of sunshine out there coming up and that'll continue on into uh Tuesday and Wednesday as well. smoke forecast. We're going to see a lot of that around with those fires over on the central and east side of the state. But again, most of that is going to stay on the central and east side of the state.

[00:03:29]All right, 7-day forecast. More sunshine on the way on your Monday. 90° and then sizzling hot. That's what I'm calling it on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Neither of those would be records. I'm going to keep a close eye on this. Josh will be in tomorrow give you an update on those temperatures. And then we just cool things down slowly as we get to the end of the week.
