A lot of people get nervous around carpenter bees, but for the most part, the ones dive-bombing your head and acting aggressive are just stingerless males bluffing and trying to guard their females nesting area. So, do females have stingers? Yes. And the females are actually the ones that chew into wood so they can create a tunnel with chambers to lay their eggs. So, how do you tell them apart? The males typically have a bright yellow patch on their face, while the females' heads are completely black.
