[00:00:07]Good everyone. Welcome back to Venom Dros. Today is going to be an exciting one. We are going to measure and milk our biggest death adder, Shaza. All right, so she's also got a challenger, Big Karen. She's pretty close by. Like, I'm actually curious to see whether Karen's bigger than Shaza now. All right, they're both monsters. Last time I measured Shaza was about 2 or so years ago and she was about 103 cm or 104 cm thereabouts. Like a like ridiculously big. Um, and I suspect she's grown a bit. Okay, so we'll soon find out. So I'm going to grab her. But yeah, there's Karen. All right, so Karen, she's a bit younger. She's huge, though. She's a bit more naughty than Shaza. Like she's trying to bite me a couple of times. Um, and I've got a milk a sack of death out of her. So, let's rock and roll. All righty. So, I'm going to get Shaza out. She's up here. Big Karen's down there. Um, I've also got Logan here this morning. He's going to help me stretch her out so we can get a good measurement. All right, Shaza.

[00:01:09]Oh, she's a big big death at her. And she's really heavy as well. Look at her size. She barely even fits on the bin lid. Um, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to restrain her first. Um, so Logan, I'll grab her. We'll get her up on the bench there. I've got the tape measure set out and we will get a bit of a look at her length, but I'll show you like I'll stretch her out across the pin and pad here cuz it's sort of hard to tell when they're curled up, but when you see her how long she is like have a go at that, would you? That is ridiculous how big she is. Going to restrain and get my fingers in there. Yep. You get on the tail. Block that vent otherwise she's going to do a poo poo on you. Okay. So, stretch her out.

[00:02:00]Try and um just stretch those coils if you can and push that tail all the way up.

[00:02:08]She's almost She's pretty well 108 cm.

[00:02:13]That's massive.

[00:02:15]Almost 1.1 m. That is And she's still got a bit of like twist in her.

[00:02:21]>> That's a big death out of her. far route. That is massive. So, let's milk her while I've got her. Um, cuz she is due. It is death out of day. Um, so go this way. Grab the venom boil.

[00:02:35]Last time I milked her, she almost bit over the like if you look at the size of her head and a venom ball there. Pretty wild. Last time she literally her fangs just caught the inside of that far side there. Um, which makes my fingers a little nervous.

[00:02:52]Oh, >> look at that. So, she almost went over.

[00:02:56]I'm going to have to start using it.

[00:02:58]We're going to start using big vials on her.

[00:03:00]>> That's a massive yield.

[00:03:04]>> Whoa, that is a B. Oh, she's double fanger on that other side, too. Haven't seen a double fanger for a bit.

[00:03:15]>> And now she doesn't want to let go. Look at that. Full autom. Isn't that wild?

[00:03:23]>> All right, so you want to put tail in and so yeah, we only just got her on the vial. So you see the like right fang went there, left fang went there. We are definitely upgrading the size of the vials we're using with Shaza cuz holy von schnitle, she almost missed.

[00:03:47]>> Safety hazard. Okay, Shazard was massive. 108 cm. I can't believe that.

[00:03:52]That's the biggest death add I've ever seen. All right, I've only seen I think two death adders get over a meter. Um, and it was only just where she's like literally she's going to crack 1.1 m, which is ridiculous. So, we're now going to look at our challenger Karen, who we named after Dylan's mom, Karen. Um, so you guys would have met Dylan in one of the recent Venom Diaries episodes. Karen is down here. They're actually from the same area. Karen and Shaza. Now I'm looking at her. I don't think she's nowhere near as long, but she's definitely got the bulk. Um maybe she hasn't cracked a meter yet. I'll be surprised now cuz when I milk her, I'm like, "Wow, she's massive." But then now looking at her after having Shazer out, I'm like, "Maybe she's not as big." No, she's not as big. She's still big, though.

[00:04:45]And a bite from her would 100% ruin your day. All right. Very quickly, but let's sit her out. What are your guesstimations here?

[00:04:54]>> Meter.

[00:04:55]>> A meter.

[00:04:56]>> Yeah.

[00:04:59]>> She's long. Oh, maybe she when she's stretched out like that.

[00:05:05]>> I'm going to say no. So, you're saying spot on a meter?

[00:05:10]I'll say 98 cm. Okay. Well, >> we're okay. So, we'll just get her in position. She's a lot more jumpy this one. Chaz is pretty chill. This one is definitely a little more jumpy.

[00:05:26]So, let's get her over to the measuring tape.

[00:05:34]Stretch her out. Oh, not even close.

[00:05:37]>> We were dreaming.

[00:05:39]>> Dreaming. We're like two fishos exaggerating our catch. She's still big.

[00:05:43]She's 90 cm.

[00:05:45]>> 90 92 93 92 >> on the dot.

[00:05:50]>> Still a big death.

[00:05:52]Still a very big death. And she's I reckon she's a fair bit younger than each other. So there's every chance she's going to hit that.

[00:05:59]>> Lot more growing to do.

[00:06:00]>> Yeah. Meet Mark. I'll listen to the expert here, would you? Here we go. You ready, Karen?

[00:06:09]That was a good squirt, too. there.

[00:06:11]Actually, yield's not as big as Shaza, but definitely solid. You're looking at probably 80 milligs there, where Shaza probably punch punched out like 130, maybe 140. Have a go at that, would you?

[00:06:24]And uh no double fanger here. But still, she's got a really nice pink in her like lip line there. E, and down I guess her sides, her flanks. And then she sort of that's like typical colors for when they hang around the What are the trees? What am I thinking of?

[00:06:45]Um Um >> I'm trying to think of the trees I the bark they hang around under. Oh man, this is really going to do my head on my head in. It's It's one of the red gums.

[00:06:57]Um >> I'm not a tree.

[00:07:00]>> It'll come to me. All right.

[00:07:03]Um and go and go and go. Oh, >> so they got that really red bark and then like the red leaves. So these guys love around that. Um especially up the midn north coast where there's not much sandstone in some spots. All righty. So Shaza absolutely smashed Karan there in size. Um Karen's definitely got the more fiery attitude of the two, but you know she's a bit more relaxed. But yeah, both massive snakes and bigger than average.

[00:07:31]Generally with adders, death adders, sorry. The males average between like 50 to 60 centimeters. Females are like 70 to 80. So they're, you know, standouts.

[00:07:40]Definitely. A milk a boy for you. How we ID like keep the IDs for the the sexes of the the snake. So see if you look on here like each card's got its own like a specimen card. It's got like the species. So we got the common name there and then the Latin name where it was caught. Um and then it sex. So 1.0 means boy. When we sex a snake, deaths, you can do it visually. Um, but generally you probe them with these little sex probes. Sounds weird, but Oh, look at this. Look at this. Look at this. Look at this. This one is tail luring. Hold on. I'll just close this. This one thinks it's about to get fed. Won't touch it, but see it tail there is wiggling flat out.

[00:08:20]So you see that he's wiggling his the tip of his tail. Adders generally hold on to their poos a bit longer than most snakes. Like they can hold on to it for like a month and then they just do this huge big dump. Uh and then they want to feed virtually straight away again. So that's what she's doing there. And she's tongue flicking trying to work out whether I've got a mouse here for her or not. Um but she'll get fed tomorrow cuz we'll milk her in a sec. But I'm going to get this boy out cuz this is this is an average size male. He's um pretty solid snake too.

[00:08:53]Um, most so you can see the tail. I'll do it on the mat over here. It's a bit safer for Chloe. So, see, look here. That's where the vent is right there, Chloe.

[00:09:05]And his tail is almost as thick as my finger cuz there's two snakes and lizards got two penises. So, there's two tucked in there. Where the girls is a short, really thin tail. Okay? So, it's what you can I can almost look at most snakes and tell you visually whether they're male or female. Um, but we use these. I'll just leave him for a sec there. We use what they call sex probes.

[00:09:27]But you just like for like that death, I'd use one this big. And you slide it up like if that's the tip of the tail down here, you slide it either side there. For a boy, it would go in probably like two or 3 cm. For a girl, it only just go in like that. Like that's a massive one. So, it's like a what you'd use for a big python. Let's milk him. Moving around on me.

[00:09:56]Much smaller head on the boys, too. Um, compared to the those big girls, you know, their heads are massive.

[00:10:07]How's Oh, good squirt there, too.

[00:10:09]Actually, that's a massive yield for a little snake. Whoa, look how big that is.

[00:10:15]That's bigger than Shazes. I don't know why today he's given me so much, but that that's the biggest yield I've ever gotten out of him. Holy moly. And he's just shed his skin. Actually, he probably missed his last milking session cuz he was shedding. I can see the bits still stuck on the tip of his tail there, which I'll get off. But look at that.

[00:10:34]That would wreck your day. Should we get this girl out that was looking for a bit of food?

[00:10:41]Um, pretty fiery snake this one. She has lunged at me a few times on the pinnad.

[00:10:47]She's only caught about a year ago or so. Real nice looking snake. This is a local death adder.

[00:10:56]And so you'll notice this snake's really gray.

[00:11:00]Um so she was caught in an area where the sandstone is really gray. All right.

[00:11:07]Um See that?

[00:11:10]See how fast they moved?

[00:11:13]Oh, see that strike? You can't even see it. It's that fast.

[00:11:18]350 km an hour. You are not getting out of the way.

[00:11:24]If that thing wants to watch her, if you're in the strike zone, like she literally I don't know if we even got that on camera. She struck forward at me and it was just like clicking your fingers.

[00:11:37]A. Oh, see her walk her fangs over the the venom ball plastic then. That she's almost pulling out of my grip. Oh, she's strong little snake. She's so strong.

[00:11:50]She's pulling her tail from my grip.

[00:11:52]I've got to get her off the venom. It's funny. Like Shazer and Karen were so much bigger, but they were so much easier to deal with. Oh, double fanger. Look at that. So, you've got a loose fang there and then the new fang in front. I reckon I can get that. So, that'll be completely loose. Bill the dentist.

[00:12:14]Voila. Look at that. Let me put her away and I'll get that fang and I'll show you. She is fiery.

[00:12:22]So, that's the fang. And there's actually a slit down the front of it where the venom comes out.

[00:12:32]>> All righty. Last death adder um for today. Anyway, follow me. Follow mate.

[00:12:38]She's another nice big female. Another nice real dark gray one like the one I just had out. Um, uh, she's not too bad generally. I think we got on camera then the strike from that last snake. Um, how fast it is. So, she's actually getting pretty she's not going to be nice today. Come on. here.

[00:13:09]Oh, maybe she's not going to be my friend today. So, this is going to be the last one I'm going to do for the moment.

[00:13:16]We are smack bang into Oh, into the start of school holidays.

[00:13:21]Another double fanger.

[00:13:24]Another That's a third one. Um I don't know if she's going to let me get that though, so I might.

[00:13:30]It's still, you can see it sitting there. It's like slightly longer, but it's not right out. So, it might still be attached. So, I won't try and um and get that one. Oh, and it's dropped it bottom tooth. Look, that's cool. I need to get that. I haven't got I've got lots of fangs, but I haven't got any teeth for people to look at. So, I'll see if I can cuz it's crazy. Yeah, I got it. Yes.

[00:13:52]So, I'll put her away and I'll come back and deal with that cuz a lot of people don't realize the venomous snakes have got teeth as well.

[00:13:59]Yeah.

[00:14:02]Yeah, they got teeth for holding on to their prey. They're just not as big as a fangs. They're much smaller. So that's it on the tip of my finger there. So that's a not a fang. It's just a holding tooth. All right. So when they're grabbing small mammals and lizards and birds, that's actually what they drive in to help hold this the prey in position. And then they use them to walk over the prey so they can swallow it.

[00:14:26]All right. So, but so sharp.

[00:14:30]And yeah, they replace them like they replace their fangs.

[00:14:34]All righty. How was that? I'm still blown away that Shaza is 108. I know she was like 103 or 104 last time, but I was expecting her to just grow like a centimeter, not another 4 cm. That's wild. And yeah, she's the biggest death adder we've ever had in the program of the history of the Venom program. So, it's really exciting. And you know, Karen's getting close. She's not far behind. Bit more growing to do and she might end up catching Shazzle. We'll see what happens. Um, but let us know in the comments who you want me to measure next. What species?
