Building a successful and resilient life requires following God's approved plans (blueprints) and starting with a strong foundation of His word, rather than pursuing personal desires; storms and challenges don't create foundations but reveal what you're already built on, so obedience to God's word is essential for withstanding life's difficulties.

I'm Built Different | Bible | Hollis ThomasAdded:
Matthew chapter 7 verse 24. We're in week three of our series Bible. We're teaching about the importance of and the authority of God's word. Here's what it says in verse 24. Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Verse 25. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house. Yet it did not fall >> because it had its foundation >> on the I think I'll start reading right there. Will you look at your neighbor and help me announce my sermon topic?
Say, "Neighbor, >> neighbor, >> I'm built different."
>> I'm built different. Clap your hands if you're ready to receive God's word. I'm built different.
I I'm built different is a modern slang term used to describe someone who is uniquely wired, made, or equipped in a way that sets them apart from others.
especially when it comes to their mindset, their resilience, their discipline, their preparation, and their ability to handle pressure. This is a term used to explain how you can keep going when you wanted to quit. Why, Pastor Hollis? Because I'm built different. This is how you survive things that you thought you couldn't.
Why? Because you're built different.
This is how you're still standing after everything that happened. Because you are built different. This is how you still got a smile on your face even though all hell is breaking loose in your family. Why? Because you are built different. This is how people cannot tell from the outside what you're going through on the inside. Will you look at somebody and tell them it's because I'm built different?
Wh watch this. A and and and I'm not comparing you to somebody else when I say I'm built different. What I'm actually doing is comparing the new you.
I wish I had somebody who have church with me. I'm comparing the new you to the old you. Because there was a time when you would have lost your mind with everything that you're GOING THROUGH.
BUT YOU'VE BEEN IN YOUR WORD uh and you've BEEN PRAYING UH AND YOU'VE BEEN FASTING AND YOU'VE BEEN WORSHIPING AND NOW YOU'VE GOT THE BENEFIT I FEEL LIKE PREACHING OF BEING ABLE TO SAY I AM BUILT DIFFERENT. SO THE DEVIL CAN'T USE IN THIS SEASON WHAT HE USED TO USE IN THE LAST SEASON. WHY? BECAUSE I AM BUILT DIFFERENT. WILL YOU LOOK AT YOUR NEIGHBOR and tell them God's building you different?
>> In fact, I want to begin our time together today with this truth. Here it is. is it's not on the screens, but it should be in your notes. It's hard to trust the construction when you've already ignored the instruction.
>> SO, DON'T SHOUT ABOUT HOW YOU'RE BUILT DIFFERENT when you're ignoring the instructions for building.
>> Can I go further?
>> I'm going to do it anyway.
Many people are complaining about the life they've built while ignoring the instructions that they skipped.
And so I'll complain about where my life is currently while ignoring the instructions that I skipped over.
So I'm mad at God for the life I'm living while ignoring the fact that I didn't follow God's instructions for living.
Here it is. Because you cannot build without a blueprint.
Oh, this is so good. Blueprints. What are blueprints, Pastor Hollis?
Blueprints are the approved. Somebody shout approved.
>> Blueprints are the approved plans for building.
The approved plans. IN OTHER WORDS, YOU CAN'T JUST BUILD what you think is a good idea.
INSTEAD, YOU'VE GOT TO BE WILLING TO BUILD WHAT HAS ALREADY been approved by God. PERHAPS YOU'RE AS FRUSTRATED AS YOU ARE currently because you've been trying to build the life you wanted, not recognizing that sometimes the life God wants you to have will be an interruption to the life that you wanted to have.
>> You wanted to be married by now, but the last three people you dated were crazy.
And now you're mad at God that you're not married while ignoring the fact that God actually saved your behind from making the biggest mistake of the last time you were going TO BE HAPPY WAS THE DAY Y'ALL SAID I DO.
>> I'm preaching to somebody today. I can feel it in my spirit. You're in the room. I know you are. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? THAT SOMETIMES THAT BREAKUP WAS THE PATHWAY TO A BREAKTHROUGH BECAUSE GOD WAS SAYING, "WE'VE GOT TO GET RID OF THEM ON this level so that I CAN TAKE YOU TO THE NEXT LEVEL." And I'm going to TELL SOMEBODY AND YOUR FAITH IS GOING to rise because I'm believing by faith THAT THIS IS MY SEASON AND MY TIME TO GO TO THE NEXT LEVEL.
>> OH, this is critical. And you got to catch this be because blueprints um number one they have to be sketched.
In other words, the the architect um when he's drawing out these plans, he doesn't use a pen at first.
He first uses a pencil and he begins to sketch out the plans. Why does he use a pencil? So that adjustments can be made.
See, it's easier to make an adjustment if I use a pencil than it is when I use a pen. And some of us are mad at God right now because you wrote your plans in ink.
>> And now you're holding on so tightly to what you want that you find it difficult for you to open your hand long enough for God to put in your hand what he wants you to have.
>> Oh, this is critical church. you got to watch me because plan uh blueprints they must be sketched but then they have to be submitted.
In other words, you got to go. So, so once the plans have been been approved by you, you then got to go have them approved by the powers that be.
>> So, so we get ready to do some renovations on a building, you get ready to do renovation on a house or build a house or or whatever the case may be.
You cannot go uh and just start building whatever you want. Instead, at a certain point in that process, you got to take your building plans and you got to take it downtown to the office of permits and you got to tell them, "Here's what I plan on building." Does that meet the code?
>> This is why I can make this biblical.
This is why the Bible says, "Submit your plans to the Lord and you will what?
Prosper." And what I'm telling you is is that if you want TO BE WHO AND WHAT GOD HAS CALLED YOU TO BE, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO BE HUMBLE ENOUGH TO SUBMIT YOUR PLANS TO GOD.
Thank you for the one person that's filled with the Holy Spirit in the room.
Who clapped? All the rest of us, we got to have a tearing service immediately after this one.
If you watch a house being built, the builder doesn't start with the roof.
The builder doesn't start with the walls.
He doesn't start by building that beautiful Jack and Gal uh master uh bathroom suite that you wanted with the walk-in closet, the center aisle so you can put all your shoes in it.
He doesn't start by building a deck with a with a hot tub and a pool.
He doesn't start there. He doesn't start by by He doesn't start by putting in windows or installing doors. But if you watch a house BEING BUILT, THE BUILDER ALWAYS STARTS WITH THE FOUNDATION.
>> IT'S THE PART OF THE HOUSE THAT YOU WON'T ALWAYS BE ABLE to see, but if it's wrong, you'll be able to tell.
>> Oh, y'all missing me.
ONCE THE BUILDER INKS, ONCE HE PUTS THE FOUNDATION IN, you may never see that foundation again, but you'll be able to tell if something's wrong.
>> Here's how I would say it. If the foundation isn't strong, eventually you'll be able to tell that something is >> Oh, slide your feet back. I want to come down your row. How's your foundation?
>> Oh, let the FOUNDATION OF A HOUSE HAVE CRACKS in it. Eventually, something that's supposed to be straight is going to start leaning.
The roof is SUPPOSED TO SIT FLUSH ONTO THE HOUSE, BUT THERE'S GOING TO BE LITTLE CRACKS IN THE ROOF. AND THEN WHAT HAPPENS WITH THOSE CRACKS IN THE ROOF?
Water starts leaking in. And now you got mildew and you've got mold and you've got drywall that is deteriorating. And now, watch this. The most expensive part of a house to repair is the foundation >> because they have to use this this this engineering method where they literally use these expensive hydraulic pumps to pump the house up off of its foundation, install stilts, and then start working on the foundation while the house is hovering above it. It's dangerous and expensive. And depending on how much has to be repaired, you can't live in the house while the foundation is being fixed.
So now you got to pay a mortgage in one place and rent in another place because you didn't take the time to prepare. Now you got to pay the expenses of a repair.
And I don't know who I'm talking to, BUT I'M TIRED OF HAVING TO REPAIR WHAT I COULD HAVE TOOK THE TIME TO LET GOD PREPARE IN THIS SEASON. GOD, PREPARE MY MIND. PREPARE MY MONEY. UH PREPARE MY HEART. PREPARE MY MARRIAGE. PREPARE MY CHILDREN BECAUSE I'M TIRED OF HAVING TO FIX WHAT I COULD HAVE just let you build the right foundation.
>> Am I doing all right today?
>> Here it is. The same way that we need blueprints to build a house, we also need a blueprint in order to build our lives.
In the same way that a builder starts building a house with the foundation, we must start building our lives with the foundation. And that foundation is the word of God. Is this making sense today?
>> Well, watch this. It's dangerous because we live in a cultural climate that likes to prioritize fruit while ignoring root.
We we want to assess your house based upon the curb appeal, but ignore what's going on in the foundation.
In fact, God wants to build you differently. He wants to build you differently in many areas of your life, but I know at least three that I want to give you today. Number one, he wants to build your character differently. Watch this. Because God is more concerned with who you are becoming than what you are building.
Is this making sense? God is more concerned with who you are becoming than he is with what you are building.
Oh, Hollers, you've led this super fast growing church in Nashville. You're building this super fast growing church.
That's great. But God cares more about who Hollis is becoming than he does what Hollis is building.
Because if you're not careful, the enemy will find a way to keep you from becoming what you're building.
So everything will be strong except for the person who is building it.
You'll build it strong only for it to break you.
>> Am I helping somebody today?
>> Can I ask you a question? Have you been building a career that's eventually going to break you?
Have you been building a business that eventually is going to break you because you paid more attention to what you were building than you did to what you were becoming?
>> And so you WALKED IN THE DOOR OF THE BOARDROOM, but you hadn't become the person you were supposed to be in order to stay there.
>> So now you keep visiting the next level, but you can't stay there long term.
>> God wants to build your character.
Somebody shout character.
>> Say it like you mean it. Character.
>> So sometimes God is waiting for you to develop principles before he gives you a promotion.
And now you think that delay is punishment when actually it's preparation.
It's God saying, "I'm going to delay what you want long enough for you to become who I want."
Is this making sense?
Oh my God. God wants to build your character differently. Number two, he wants to build your composure differently. Oh, this is good. Because storms don't just test what you believe, they reveal what you're built on. I I'm a sports fanatic and one of the uh one of my sports that I really love is football. I love football. Uh I particularly love quarterbacks.
And when I look at a quarterback, one of the things that I pay attention to is how composed are they?
Because a quarterback's job is to do what with the football? To throw it, right? So the quarterback is sitting back there and he's in a shotgun and he's overlooking the defense. He's like, "Blue 42." Why do we always say blue 42?
Where did that come from? He's like, "BLUE 42." And he's looking at the defense and he's getting ready to drop back. And as he's dropping back to pass the ball, does the defense just let him throw it?
They do something called rushing the passer, which means there's some big old guys on the other side of that line that are doing everything they can TO TACKLE YOU BEFORE YOU CAN THROW the ball. And so the quarterback has to know how TO STAND THERE WITH ALL KIND OF STUFF RUSHING AT HIM AT ONE TIME AND STILL BE COMPOSED ENOUGH TO DO HIS JOB EVEN THOUGH THERE'S PRESSURE COMING FROM THE OUTSIDE. CAN I TELL YOU WHAT YOU YOU YOU SHOULD BE PRAYING AND ASKING GOD FOR?
GOD, GIVE ME THE TYPE OF COMPOSURE THAT WHEN THE DEVIL IS TRYING TO KEEP ME FROM BEING A GOOD MOTHER, I'LL BE ABLE TO STAND AND STILL COVER MY BABIES. THAT WHEN THE DEVIL IS TRYING TO [laughter] KEEP ME FROM BEING A GOOD FATHER, I'LL BE ABLE TO STAY COMPOSED AND STILL COVER MY CHILDREN. GOD, GIVE ME COMPOSURE.
God wants to build your character differently. He wants to build your composure differently. But he also wants to build your cravings.
Oh, slide your feet back.
I want to come down your row because your foundation will always be shaped by what you keep feeding it.
Is this making good sense? God wants to build your cravings differently because God knows that one of the biggest enemies to your future is what you keep feeding yourself today.
Oh, this is good. What do you crave that you shouldn't?
Oh, God.
So, so you grew up as a child who didn't get a lot of attention and now you're an adult who do anything to get attention.
You need God to rebuild your cravings.
You you grew up as a child who didn't get a lot of love and now you're willing to do anything to get love.
And so you've gotten yourself in all sorts of relational predicaments trying to chase after something. Watch this. Cravings. When you allow God to build your cravings, it gives you the ability to choose not to feel a legitimate need illegitimately.
Did you hear what I just said?
So, oh man, I don't want to be alone.
Okay, your craving for companionship, that's a legitimate need. But if you're not careful, you'll let that legitimate need keep forcing you back to a toxic relationship.
If you're not careful, you you you'll allow your desire for love, which is a a legitimate need, to force you into relationships that don't reflect God's standards or God's desires.
>> Is this making sense? So, so when you say God, build my cravings, what you're saying is is God, what I need you to do is I need you to build me in such a way to where now I'm not chasing after something you already said no to.
Why? Because your cravings feel good today, but they might kill you tomorrow.
And God as a loving father refuses to allow you to have a diet of things that are going to cause health issues tomorrow. Now, if you if I let Ava pick out every meal, Ava and Allison pick out every meal. Deuce pick out every meal he ever wanted, they would probably eat trollies and ice cream every day.
Every day.
But because I love them, I'm in the car like, "No, baby. You can have ice cream or trololis, but you can't have both.
I'm going to break on one of them. Not I can't say no to both.
Daddy, can I have this? No. Have you had dinner yet?
If I if we let Ava eat what she wants to, the Ava the type to where if I if I grill chicken and then and then make like corn or broccoli or something, she's going to eat the meat but not the vegetables.
But as a loving father, I say, "Hey, baby, make sure you eat that broccoli."
What What am I doing? I'm I'm I'm trying to build her cravings in such a way that I don't let her continue to build an appetite for what she wants but never for what she needs.
I am teaching today.
And so the passage the passage that we're studying today closes Jesus's what we call his sermon on the mount. This is found in Matthew chapter 5 through Matthew chapter 7 where Jesus is teaching about the kingdom, righteousness, prayer, relationships, sex, money, anxiety, judgment, and obedience. If you want to know what God has to say about those topics, what Jesus said about those topics, read Matthew chapter 5 through Matthew chapter 7. Okay? Is this making sense?
If you want to know what Jesus had to say about money, read Matthew chapter 5 through Matthew chapter 7. It's his sermon on the mount. Okay?
Jesus ends this sermon with a parable that we've read a portion of today called the parable of the wise and foolish builder.
Jesus is suggesting to his disciples then and now that even though I have taught the word, me teaching it is not enough. Y'all have to respond. He's talking to you and I that we have to respond to what he has taught. Is this making sense? He has given us an opportunity for obedience.
Oh, I'm trying to help somebody today.
Jesus knows that the measuring stick, oh, I'm afraid to say this. Jesus knows that the measuring stick for a successful life is not if the house is standing, but rather what can the house withstand.
>> Did you catch that? I'm going to preach to them over here. The question is not is the house standing. JESUS SAYS THE QUESTION is what can the house withstand?
>> It's not are y'all married, it's are y'all happy.
>> It's not it's not are you going on dates, it's do I like the person sitting on the other side of the table.
>> Cuz a lot of y'all going on dates cuz you hungry.
Y'all so silly.
And building on God's word is not an invitation to a better life. is an invitation to the best life.
>> Did you catch that?
>> All right, look at this. Put this in your notes. Don't just agree with the word, apply it.
>> Matthew chapter 7 verse 24. It says, "Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the what?
>> On the rock." Jesus says the wise builder is not just someone who listens but someone who responds.
Biblically, wisdom was not just intellectual. It was behavioral.
You can't claim wisdom just because you know it. You claim wisdom when you do something with what you know.
>> Oh, God showed me that they they weren't really for me and you didn't break up with them.
So you want to brag about the fact that you knew and still crashed out.
It's like, "Oh, that's crazy. You real special.
You knew how this was going to end and you kept going anyway."
OH, WOW.
Let's Let's jump to verse 26. I I've got to hurry.
But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.
Yeah, y'all pray for me. This is somewhat isogetical, but I I bet that was a nice house, too.
Oh, for real. I bet it was a real nice house cuz cuz the builder didn't invest any money in the foundation so they could put all the money in the other stuff.
You see where we where we where we allow ourselves to take shortcuts at?
>> Am I helping anybody?
>> I bet it was a nice house.
OH, IT WAS SO I BET THEY HAD THAT KIND OF HOUSE THAT they couldn't wait to invite people over to. You ever had that friend who's just so eager for you to come over?
Come see the house. Come see the house.
>> Such a nice house until a storm came.
Such a carefully curated Instagram profile until a storm hits you. OH MAN, YOU JUST LOOK SO WELL PUT TOGETHER ON THE internet until life hits and now we recognize that instead of building your house on stone, you built it on sand.
Notice both builders hear Jesus, but both builders do not obey Jesus.
Look at your neighbor. Say, "Don't be mad at me."
We both heard the same word.
I did something with it and you didn't.
Don't be mad when you see what God does in my life in the next season because we had the same word and the same Bible and the same 24 HOURS IN THE DAY. I CHOSE to do something different with mine.
Uh-oh. One obeyed, one ignored. The difference was not exposure. It was application.
Verse 27. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against the house, and it fell with a great crash.
I've got to hurry. Because storms don't make you fall apart. They reveal where you're already cracked.
>> Watch this. Watch this. Watch this.
Watch this. Watch this. Your faith was already cracking.
And so that layoff just exposed the fact that you didn't think God was your source. you thought your job was.
>> And so now that they've downsized your department, your faith has walked out the door because you never believe God to provide for you. You believe that you would have to provide for you.
>> Is this making sense?
>> And now you're in a crisis of faith because what do I do when what I built on washes away?
>> [snorts] >> Oh God, help us today.
Storms don't create foundations, they expose foundations.
The same storm hit both houses.
Oh, this is good. Which mean Oh, help me, Holy Spirit. I got to go. I got to go. I got to go. Oh, this is so good. I didn't see this in the first service.
The same storm hits both houses.
>> ONE HOUSE OBEYED. ONE HOUSE DIDN'T, WHICH MEANS OBEDIENCE does not exempt you from a storm.
YOU CAN BE DOING EVERYTHING GOD TOLD YOU TO DO AND A STORM STILL JUMP OFF. AND BECAUSE I WAS OBEDIENT DOESN'T MEAN THAT I WON'T BE IN A STORM, BUT MY OBEDIENCE WILL MEAN I'LL MAKE IT OUT OF THE STORM.
CAN YOU TAKE 15 SECONDS AND CAN YOU GIVE GOD PRAISE BECAUSE YOU'RE BUILDING YOUR LIFE ON THE WORD OF GOD ON CHRIST THE SOLID ROCK I STAND. ALL OTHER GROUND IS SINKING SAND.
Uh oh. Watch this. I'm done. I'm done.
I'm done. I'm done. I'm done. I'm done.
You can stand to your feet that way.
I'll stop. If y'all stand up, I'll stop.
Is this good? Y'all >> watch this. Watch this. Y'all, the musicians, y'all can join me on stage. When they started playing, I really stopped in.
Storms don't create foundations. They do what? Expose them. All right.
Here are three storms that will reveal your foundations. Are you ready? Number one is a storm called suffering.
Suffering.
Oh, you're so saved until it's time to suffer.
You mean to tell me suffering is enough for you to cut somebody out?
You mean to tell me that suffering is enough for you to abandon your prayer life?
Suffering begs the question, can your trust survive your disappointment?
Is your faith resilient enough to be disappointed but not give up? I I told you guys that we we've been uh believing God for a building throughout the history of this church. Even before we launched, people don't even know this. So, we launched the church on January 28th of 2024.
Eight weeks before we launched, we didn't know where the church was going to be.
So, when I tell y'all I got crazy faith, like, I think something's wrong with me.
Y'all were seeing those ads on Instagram and Facebook about a church, and nobody knew where it was going to be at, including me.
Everybody was telling me, "Hollas, eventually you going to have to move the date back." I was like, "No, God's going to do something.
Hollers is getting close. You're going to move." No, God's gonna do something.
And the whole time I'm telling everybody else what God is going to do, the people that I'm asking, can we have church in their buildings and can we rent this concert hall? Can we be in this church?
They're telling me no.
While I'm telling everybody else who's following me, God's going to do it.
Meanwhile, I'm picking my faith up off the floor every time I get disappointed.
Listen to me, Amanda.
And a part of building your life on God's word means that your trust is going to be have to be stronger than your disappointment.
Can your emotions handle unmet expectations?
What do you do when God don't do what you wanted him to? That's suffering.
Number two, the storm of temptation.
This is this begs the question, can your convictions survive your desires?
>> Can you hold on to what you believe when you want to do something else?
Trust me, I'm not. Everybody think you like you single by force. Like no, I'm very much single by choice.
I can have somebody if I wanted somebody, but I'm I just don't want anybody.
I got to hold on to my convictions.
There's nights where I have desires, but you got to hold on to your what?
Convictions.
Is this making sense, y'all?
Are you able to say no externally without being able to tell yourself no internally?
Lastly, the storm of pressure. I'm done.
I got to stop. The storm of pressure.
This is can you survive?
Wait.
Or should I say can you survive?
>> Wait.
CAN YOUR FAITH survive God telling you hold on?
You hate being put on hold.
I know you do. Cuz when somebody puts you on hold, what do you do? Hang up. I know you do.
Just ghetto. Cuz I do it, too.
Watch this. But that's how we do God.
>> When God says hold on, we hang up and we start building our life on what we want to do and on what we think is best because God is taking you too long.
Father, in Jesus name, I pray that by the power of your Holy Spirit, you will give these your people the unique ability to trust you and to build their lives on your word. God, we thank you for your word. We thank you that your word is truth. We thank you that your word is power. We thank you that your word has the ability to help us build a life that is pleasing to you. SO, FATHER, I PRAY BY THE POWER OF YOUR HOLY SPIRIT THAT YOU WOULD HELP US TO DEAL with every other DESIRE THAT WOULD PUSH US TO TRY TO BUILD OUR LIFE ON what we want, but instead give US THE HUMILITY TO SUBMIT OUR plans to your word, to your will, and to your way. Yes, we'll obey. Yes, we'll do it. Yes, we'll follow you. BECAUSE FOLLOWING YOU IS THE BEST thing uh we could ever do. It's in Jesus' name we pray. If you believe it, give God praise all over the room.
