The subconscious mind can create physical sensations like touch through guided imagination and focused attention, as demonstrated by a hypnotic technique where a person experiences a sensation of touch on their arm without any physical contact, showing how the mind can translate imagined sensations into real physical experiences.

Can Your Subconscious Mind Create Physical Touch?
Added:I'm not going to touch you, but you're going to feel it anyway.
And by the second arm, you'll stop questioning how [music] you're listening, you're breathing, you're somewhere comfortable or comfortable enough.
If your eyes want to close, let them close.
If they'd rather stay open and rest on something, let them.
Either way [sighs] works because either way, you're still listening.
And it's the listening that does the work.
There's no effort in this.
Effort is the one thing that gets in the way.
So, as you listen, you can let that go first.
>> [music] >> You don't have to make anything happen.
You only have to notice [snorts] it happening.
[music] And you may discover that each imagined [sighs] touch takes something with it as it fades, like a thought or a piece of the day.
>> [music] >> So, let's begin with one hand, whichever one feels easiest.
Let it rest where it is.
[music] And now, how would it feel if there were a touch on the back of that hand?
so light and faint that it feels [snorts] just [gasps] barely there.
[music] A slow stroke starting at your wrist, [music] moving over the back of your hand, [music] tracing out along one finger, [music] and then gone.
[music] And again wrist, [music] hand, [music] finger [music] gone.
[music] Notice the rhythm of this.
how the second stroke was more distinct than the first.
That's how this works.
Each one feels a little more vivid than the one before.
And there's nothing you need to do to make that true. [music] You might feel a warmth beginning in the palm.
Not heat, warmth.
[music] A warmth that spreads on its own once it starts.
And as the warmth spreads, your hand can relax and soften completely.
[music] wrist, hand, [music] fingers gone. [sighs] [music] That hand feels heavy now.
Pleasantly, uselessly heavy.
[music] And now the touch begins. A little higher from the inside of your elbow [music] all the way down, [music] forearm, wrist, [music] hand, [sighs and gasps] fingertips, [music] and away.
One long [sighs] unhurried stroke downward, always ending past your fingers [music] again. And this time it starts higher still.
Mid upper arm [music] down past the elbow [music] down the forearm out through the fingers and gone.
[music] Do you notice what's going with it?
Every stroke that runs down that arm is carrying something out.
Anything that side of you has been holding on to gets picked up at the shoulder and drawn all the way down and out.
[music] Now, the touch starts at the very top of your shoulder, [music] down the outside of your upper arm, [music] past the elbow, [music] along the forearm, [sighs] [music] over the wrist, [music] out through the fingertips.
>> [music] >> and away.
Nothing but a warm glow is left in its place.
That's all that's in that arm now.
A glowing [sighs] warmth.
[music] Of course, you have another arm. And I'm curious how much faster this one will go because your mind already knows the pattern.
And a mind that knows a pattern falls into it easily.
[music] the back of the other hand, wrist, [music] hand, fingers [music] gone.
It already feels much clearer, doesn't it?
Warmth in the palm.
[music] Weight in the fingers [music] from the elbow now [music] all the way down and out [music] from the upper arm.
[music] all the way down and out [music] from the shoulder.
The whole length of it [music] down and down [music] and out past your fingertips, taking every thought on that side with it.
>> [music] >> Both arms now. [gasps] Both arms warm.
Both arms [sighs] heavy. [music] Both shoulders finally letting go of the shape they've been holding all [gasps] day. [music] And now, both at once.
>> [music] >> Two strokes, one on each shoulder, moving down the outsides of both arms together, [music] past both elbows, [music] over both wrists, [music] out through all your fingers.
>> [music] >> and gone [music] again.
Both shoulders [music] down [music] and gone.
Each wave leaves the same wide, [sighs and gasps] warm, glowing energy behind.
>> [music] >> And as each stroke moves downward, something else moves downward with it.
[music] Your thoughts, your attention, [music] you down with every caress, [music] deeper with everyone.
[music] Now, what happens if a touch goes the other way?
Starting at your wrists and moving up, [music] up the forearms, [music] up past the elbows, [music] up toward your shoulders.
>> [music] >> Notice how a bit more awareness comes back as your mind lifts just slightly toward the surface. [music] That's fine. That's supposed to happen [music] because now one long stroke from the shoulders [music] all [sighs] the way down. [music] Do you feel that?
You sink deeper than before every single time. [music] That's the trick of it.
Coming up a little makes sinking back down feel immense.
>> [music] >> up from the wrist halfway to the elbows.
[music] A little more awake [music] and down from the shoulders [music] all the way [sighs] out.
>> [music] >> Twice as deep as before.
[music] Now, [gasps and sighs] small taps along the outside of your arms.
Light, quick, scattered.
[music] Small points of contact are sending ripples through you.
>> [music] >> Ripples of relaxation moving inward, echoing down, [music] waking you slightly, [music] loosening you enormously.
[music] And after the ripples, one long slow stroke from both shoulders all the way down.
[music] All the way out.
[music] Down you go.
[music] >> [music] >> The next touch begins higher [sighs] than any of them.
Two hands resting on the top of your head.
Just resting [music] and then moving down over the ground.
[music] down the sides of your head, [music] past your temples, [music] behind your ears, [music] down your neck, [music] across both shoulders, [music] down both arms.
>> [music] >> out through your fingertips [music] and gone.
Something in you may have gone completely blank right there. [music] It's remarkable how little it takes, isn't it? [music] Again, from the top of your head, [music] down the sides, [music] down the neck, [music] the shoulders, [music] the arms.
[music] out [music] and flank up from the wrists. [music] A touch of alertness. [music] Small taps.
[music] Ripples [music] and down from the crown of your head.
[music] One [sighs] long unbroken stroke all the way out through your fingers [music] blank. [music] Hypnosis really is this simple.
All it takes is a voice, a described touch, and a moment of silence in your mind.
So take that peace with you when this ends.
[music] You can stay exactly this deep and let yourself drift on.
[music] [music] And when you're ready, you'll come back up on your own, effortless and easy.
And from now on, whenever you settle in and think of these long, slow strokes running from your shoulders down and [sighs and gasps] out through your fingers.
You'll find this same warm sense of peace comes back to meet you faster each time.
[music] So now upward from your wrists, [music] up your forearms, [music] past your elbows, [music] up to your shoulders.
Alertness coming back with it.
[music] Up over your shoulders, [music] up your neck, [music] up to the top of your head, [music] and all the way awake.
Taking a breath now. [music] Moving your fingers. [music] Coming back at your own pace, [music] but we're not quite finished.
One more stroke from your shoulders all the way down. [music] And one more from the top of your head down [music] and out.
[music] Enjoy.
