Hawaii Quake Daily Trends MAY 23rdAdded:
A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook Hawaii late Friday night. USGS [music] says it struck at 9:46 p.m. Hawaii time, about 7 miles [music] south of Honaunau Napo'opo'o on the west side of the Big Island.
The quake was about 14 miles deep and shaking was felt across the island chain.
Near the epicenter, [music] reports reached very strong levels with minor to moderate damage possible.
But this was not [music] listed as a tsunami event. And USGS says the quake does not appear to have directly affected Mauna Loa or Kilauea.
The likely cause was deeper tectonic [music] stress, the Pacific oceanic plate bending under the weight of the Hawaiian Islands.
Several small aftershocks had already been recorded and more may continue in the coming days.
In [music] Hawaii, volcanoes get the attention, but sometimes the whole island chain reminds it is still moving.
