The focal mechanism of an earthquake reveals its fault type and helps determine whether it is associated with a specific fault system; this magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Johannesburg, California, showed reverse faulting and was not associated with the Garlock fault, despite occurring in a region with historical seismic activity including the 2019 Ridgecrest and 1992 Landers earthquakes.

Magnitude 4.1 Earthquake near Johannesburg, CA. #earthquakedude #garlockfault #ridgecrestAdded:
Magnitude 4.1 earthquake near Johannesburg, California occurring on June 1st at 3:34 p.m. Let's talk about it. At the time of the recording, there have been 12 aftershocks with the largest one coming in at a magnitude 3.4. Now, this earthquake occurred southwest of Ridgecrest, California.
And as you can see, it comes in at a magnitude 4.1 with a depth of 7.6 km.
The aftershock forecast predicts about a 4% of another magnitude 4 plus earthquake. Here's the interesting part, the focal mechanism is showing reverse faulting. So, this earthquake is not associated to the Garlock fault. Before I continue the video, I want to remind you guys that I'll be running the Long Beach Half Marathon in honor of my dad who's dealing with stage four cancer and I'm raising money for the American Cancer Society. So, even if you guys can donate a couple bucks, the link is in my bio. Thank you so much. Now, here's where things get interesting. Do you guys remember on July 4th, 2019, the Ridgecrest earthquakes? That earthquake terminated right about there. And in 1992, the Landers earthquake also terminated in this region right here. So, there's a gap between the edge of the Ridgecrest earthquake and the Landers where we think potentially might be another potential spot for another earthquake.
Now, will this determine that? Probably not, but we'll continue to monitor it.
So, make sure you follow for updates.
And let me know if you have any questions.
