Typhoons are tropical cyclones that are numbered rather than named, with intensity classified on a scale from tropical depression to Category 5 hurricane; storm surge occurs when strong winds push water toward the shore, causing water levels to rise significantly above normal tide levels, and coastal protection structures like breakwaters and natural rock formations help mitigate these effects.

OMG! Riding out Typhoon 6 in Shimoda, Japan! #typhoonAjouté :
Hey everybody, Mike Tiburzi here at Tiburzi's Island Adventures. And I am sitting in Shimoda, Japan.
And we are under a typhoon right now. This is a typhoon number six. They don't name their storms.
They number them.
And if you don't know what a typhoon is, it's their equivalent of a hurricane.
But, hurricanes have categories, one through five, five being the worst. And then once the winds die down a little bit, they settle with they rename it as a or recategorize it as a tropical storm. And that is it settles down even more, it's categorized as a tropical depression.
This particular typhoon, I think, falls under the category of tropical storm, maybe even tropical depression. The winds are probably 50 to 60 miles per hour. Uh we do have somewhat of a storm surge, and I'm going to show you what it looks like right now. This has been going on all night. And if we look over here, we can see the water. And I believe it's about high tide, so this is about as high as it's going to get. It's been blowing like crazy all night, and it's going to continue through the day. And you do have somewhat of a storm surge because usually the water is up to here.
And now it's way up here.
But we do have a breakwater, and we do have natural rock formations that help them protect this little cove.
So here we are, staying safe in Shimoda, Japan, in the middle of typhoon number six.
