Chiropractic clinics typically offer a range of services including manual adjustments, muscle release therapy, and instrument-assisted soft tissue work using tools like the Activator and Graston tool, while massage therapy encompasses therapeutic, relaxation, lymphatic, hot stone, and cupping treatments; the optimal treatment sequence between chiropractic care and massage therapy depends on individual circumstances, with acute pain or locked joints potentially benefiting from mobilization first, though patient preference often guides the decision.

You Gotta Get Treated Here featuring Dr. Dana Richards of Beddington Chiropractic & MassageHinzugefügt:
Hey guys, it's Amanda from Massage Therapy Media back for another episode of You Got to Get Treated Here. I know it's been a while since we've done one, but we're here in beautiful Calgary, Alberta. We're at Bedington Chiropractic and Massage. The owner, Dr. Dana is going to take us on a tour of the clinic. Her parents actually met one of our team members in Mexico and they've got a fantastic product. Look out for that product review coming soon. But for now, let's go check out the clinic and see why you got to get treated here.
All right, we're inside the clinic. Dr. Dana, thank you so much for taking time to tour us around today. And you guys at home can't see that Dana's little guy is here, so we better make this quick before he gets annoyed with us. This clinic has a long-standing history here in Calgary. Dana, why don't you tell us a little bit about the history and how you ended up becoming the owner of Bington Chiropractic and Massage.
>> All right, so yes, it has a long history. The clinic was established in 1993. It always was in this mall, which in itself has changed a lot. Um, but it been a staple of the Bedington community for many years. Um, as when I was a little girl, my mom would bring me to the chiropractor. I would take along to her appointments. And the chiropractor that originally owned this clinic was a wonderful woman who I guess kind of stole my heart. So, when I was in grade 12 and it was time for me to decide what I wanted to do as an adult, I thought about all the adults in my life. And I thought about her and it had to do with the clinic and what she did, but I think honestly mostly it had to do with her personality and her warmth and she always seemed so happy. So, I said, "Okay, I think I could be a chiropractor." and I looked into the school for it and yada yada. Um, and then fast forward 8 years later, I went to school. I went to University of Calgary in Calgary and then I went to the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in Toronto. I graduated and when I came back, she was ready to sell her clinic. So, it just so happened that I was ready and she was here. So, I was the one that took over her clinic. So, this is what is now Bettington Chiropractic and Massage. So, I grew up just up the street from here and I've been a part of this community for my entire life. That's amazing. I mean, the universe just opened a door wide open for you and you stepped right in. I love that. So, you're a chiropractor, but I see just even with the menu behind you that you offer other services. I know there's products. I did mention at the beginning we're going to be doing a product review because I think your parents actually invented something. So, can you invented it? I love that even more. I love that even more. So let's go through what are the products and services that people can expect when they visit you here at the clinic. Okay.
So at the clinic the p our primary breadandbut business is chiropractic and massage therapy. So we have five amazing chiropractors here. We have six incredible massage therapists here. So that's our main uh business. We also offer custom orthotics and compression socks and then a variety of products that we sell to the clinic as well. We also have a lot of therapists that um do prenatal care. So, both prenatal massage therapy and prenatal chiropractic care.
And so, that's a big part of, you know, the clinic as well. And we also have one special product. That's the product that I invented. It's called the Backbone Prenatal Cushion System. And so, it's a cushion system that allows a pregnant woman to lie face down on a massage therapy table or a chiropractic table comfortably to receive a treatment or assessment in the prone position, which for a lot of pregnant women, having the ability to lay face down is like amazing.
>> Yes. Yes. And sometimes it's more comfortable than a sidelineing massage, especially when you're pregnant. So, it's it's been great.
>> Amazing. So, are we ready to see the rooms?
>> Yes. I'll take you back.
So, this is your treatment room, Dana.
And I see a lot of tools that you have around here. Some of them I recognize, some of them I don't. Why don't you tell us what types of treatments you do in this room as a chiropractor?
>> Sure. So, I guess the biggest tool is going to be a hands. So, we do a lot of manual muscle work. We do like muscle release therapy, that type of thing. We do manual adjustments as well. Um, alternative to manual therapies like that. We have other tools we can use to adjust the joints. That includes the activator. That's this little tool here.
It's just a spring-loaded device. Kind of feels like this on your hand. And we can use this to get motion into joint segments that we want to move. We have um instrument assisted soft tissue stuff. This is called a grass and tool.
So this is to break up you know scar tissue or adhesions and different types of tissue.
We have a bigger massager which is down on the floor over there. It's called the thumper. It's just for massaging bigger broader areas of the body. And then the table itself is a tool. So different parts of the table move. We've drop pieces. So this part of the table comes up and down when you're lying face down.
We can use that to adjust the lower parts of your sacrum and your pelvis.
Um, there's also drops on the neck piece and on the chest piece as well. I'm very interested in the larger one on the floor. I've never had a treatment with the Thumper. And you know, we did a lot of traveling yesterday. My back's a little sore. There's a table here and a chiropractor. I don't know. What do you think?
>> Let's do it. Let's do it.
now that my teeth have stopped vibrating a little bit. That was incredible, especially around the hip and glute area. And after a day of traveling, that was well needed. I thought of something when I had my face down in your table.
Um, as a massage therapist, I often get asked by my patients because I refer to chiropractors in my neighborhood. Is it better to get the soft tissue work and then see the Cairo or vice versa? I know how I answer this question. What do you typically tell your patients in terms of seeing the chiropractors and the massage therapists here?
>> That's a common question. People ask me this all the time and the answer is it depends. So, it totally depends. Some people just have a preference. Some people like to be, you know, loosened up in a massage before they come in for an adjustment. That's totally fine. There's no right or wrong answer here. Some people, like I would say if someone's in more of an acute pain or has a locked, stiff joint, it might be a good idea to get it mobilized first. So, a you're a little more comfortable on the massage table, but also so the massage can um be a little bit more effective because you have joint motion while you're lengthening the muscles. So, it really is a preference thing. There's only a few instances where I would clinically suggest someone to do one over the other, but generally it's going to be a what do you like? Makes sense to me.
And here we are in one of your massage rooms. I did notice on the walk down the hall to get here, there's a different piece of art in every one of the rooms.
Were you very selective in the room decor or are you like me? I'm just like that looks nice. Let's pick that one.
>> I think I'm more like you. More of a like this looks nice. We when I took over the clinic had a very different um I guess aesthetic and energy. So we and it at this point, you know, it's been around for a long time. So we had a fresh coat of paint and then it was definitely a we wanted to go with the lighter blues to kind of match the branding, but very much just a I like this, let's choose this. I am a registered massage therapist and I know that within our profession there's so many different types of therapists. What would you say people can expect when booking an appointment with a registered massage therapist here? Do you have a variety of different types of therapists and what does it look like? Yes. So, we provide a variety of different things.
So, I think like the main the main thing is going to be like a therapeutic massage. Um someone who's coming in with maybe an injury. We see a lot of motor vehicle accident injury. or somebody who's coming in with a specific need.
Maybe it's their shoulder, maybe it's headaches, like I said, maybe it's maybe it's prenatal, we do a lot of prenatal massage as well. Um, so therapeutic massage, we also do relaxation massage, lymphatic massage, we do hot stones and most of the therapists, we do a lot of cupping.
>> Okay. I teach cupping. So, I love that.
And as people who've been following me for a while know, prenatal is one of my favorite treatments to do. So, I love that you guys offer such a variety here.
And I did see the hot stones over there, and I love that, too. So relaxing.
Dana, thank you so much for allowing us into your space today and letting us know why you got to get treated here. I love all of the services you guys offer and the cushion system is amazing. Can't wait to start using it in my own practice.
>> Thank you. It was a pleasure having you.
Thank you.
