Tesla FSD V14 Lite - I Disengaged, But NOT For The Reason You Think
Added:Hello everyone. This is Rocco coming at you for another full self-driving video.
Uh we are on our way uh to uh Carl's Jr. in Phoenix and to kind of do some grocery shopping today.
Figured um it would be a good uh light rain test.
So it's been raining all day yesterday.
I didn't uh didn't even think about making a video yesterday. I was just staying home getting some stuff done. But uh today obviously we are going out and while there's a light rain I will probably keep uh myself on chill or sloth mode because uh I only have like 3/32 left of my tires. They're they're still my winter tires in here in the summertime.
So I'm trying to wear them out to just get the full use out of them and so I can get a full replacement cuz they were they're not any good for snow anymore.
They're just they're a little bit too worn to Yeah, just figure I'll just wear them out.
That being said, we'll see how it does getting onto the highway here. Actually, I'm going to go ahead and put it into uh chill mode and see if by chance it will merge onto the highway uh more chill.
You can see we are getting a little bit of fog here.
But that's not a problem for full self-driving. It doesn't need no lidar to do that.
Uh that was an appropriate behavior um for this this guy coming pulling out in.
Uh there's another car that would waited to turn. My car just like yielded for it.
I'm like, "Nah, that was not what I think I was not recording." Oh, it's quite foggy today.
Actually, I would argue that this type of fog Ooh, what's this truck doing?
That should be merging faster than that if you're going to pull out in front of a semi truck.
Also, my car needs to get turn his blinker on sooner. It's done this before on this version.
And that's to me is a slight regression.
Also, yeah, it shouldn't be getting getting no break in chill mode when cars are trying to pass and are behind a truck.
It should at chill mode this should stay behind this truck. And that's what I want because the roads are just damp and I don't have any fear of hydroplaning on this type of road. I'm just being extra safe today.
So, you can also see a difference on how this chill mode respond versus how this standard mode versus terrain mode respond.
So, there's a chance I will be making a long road trip up to Canada at the end of this month.
And I've done that trip twice before or several I've done that Actually, I have done it twice.
Yeah, I've just not the the same route.
I've done it half of it twice and then I went a different route the last time. That being said, the goal is to see how does freezing version 14 light improve over 12.6.4. I expect it to be quite good.
There's a guy Colby, I don't know his last name, but he's on X doing a cross country drive from I think Miami, Florida up to somewhere in Alaska.
And so far apparently he's done zero disengagements, which I when I read this is like no, there's no way.
Disengagements might be possible, interventions not a chance because the way it parks and everything else and my yeah.
They're not getting zero interventions, not a chance.
Like not a chance with what the way the car is driving and everything else, not a chance.
I've gotten multiple necessary disengagements and interventions.
So, I just don't see how that's possible on a cross country trip on this version.
Um Maybe we'll we'll find out. I'm going to do my own cross country trip up to here to Canada, I believe.
And we're going to find out if it can handle it.
The biggest thing is because my low tread on my tires, if it has a downpour and slow mode doesn't go slow enough, I might have to disengage to go slower and that's no real fault of the car. It's just a fault of me being cheap and wanting to get the full use of my tires.
This is actually working really well in chill mode, to be honest.
Um This is the speed I would want it to go right now. It's changed to 55 mph. It's a mild construction zone.
This is great. This is what it should be doing, in my opinion.
Okay, so the one thing about chill mode that's a little bit annoying is I feel like this slow mode should be doing this, not chill mode. Chill mode should be going right at the speed limit, in my opinion.
Um standard should be going just above the speed limit.
Like I feel like chill mode should be just going should go at speed limit. I guess maybe I had set my expectations wrong, I don't know. It is It seems to be creeping up there since now there's a car coming up behind me.
But I think that's the only the only reason why it's going up in speed because someone else is coming up behind me.
Like this makes sense. Maybe it's even got to go faster than the speed limit now.
But we're about Okay.
Um this is an unnecessary disengagement.
You changed my navigation route without me asking to, and so I did not go this way. This is the way I'm supposed to be going, but you changed my navigation route and I didn't ask it the car to do that.
I'm going to call that an unnecessary disengagement cuz that's insane. I told it to go this way and the car is no longer going this way.
I can't even re-engage because it's not it's not going to go.
That's That's quite frustrating to me that the car keeps changing the navigation route.
And if you look here, uh where is this?
No.
This.
I only have it set if it changes the speed by 5 minutes, and there's not a 5-minute difference between these two routes. In fact, the highway that it's suggesting that it wants me to go will actually be slower most of the time because usually there's traffic somewhere in here.
But the road we're going is this road back up in here.
And it's this road that goes along in here and back over it.
Um along the highway. And that road never has traffic or any backups. So, it's annoying that it wants to go that way. And annoying that it's not automatically rerouting since we're off the highway at a light, you'd think, "Okay, we'll go go back off."
So, that this is something that seems to be new with this version that I The old version would do this as well, but nowhere near as bad. I I find that all the time is the car changing my route. I chose one route, I started the drive, and all of a sudden it's going a different way.
Eventually, it's going to update here.
There. That's the route I wanted to go.
You saw at most a 2-minute difference, which is not accurate to me because like usually I go faster on the back roads, which I can go back in the standard mode since the road's not wet.
But um the back road like this, I will go faster on. So, percentage-wise, I'm actually quicker.
So, it's probably only a 1-minute difference.
And so, that's that's I would have preferably gone these roads than the highway, personally.
And for also, when it comes to the FSD testing, it's more interesting because you have more stock wise, more cars, more scenarios that can get unique unique testing.
And I did say disengagement earlier is a necessary intervention because I chose a specific way I want the car to go and then the car's changing it.
That's not where I wanted to go to.
So, now I have to I have to intervene to to do that. Unfortunately, because I can't get it to change quick enough, I had to disengage. But, it definitely was necessary in my opinion because I want to go this direction. The car shouldn't override my desires, essentially. That's actually going to It's such an interesting thing with AI that it's like humans versus the computers is the AI going to like just override you and not listen to the human?
That's an interesting philosophical question, I suppose, to ask on there.
Very good behavior >> Oh.
>> until that.
That That's something on that seems like it double takes on unprotected lefts, even though it doesn't see anything. And so, it taps the brakes just a little bit.
And why Well, it's like all about safety, but I'm like the camera's supposed to respond quicker than the human is, so what's it seeing? I didn't see anything.
I don't know what the car saw. It's like it just has to like tap the brake because oh, I thought I saw It's like it's trained off of a human that like I've done that where you go rolling into an unprotected left because of the blind spot in the B pillar and like oh, is there something there? And so, you you let off the accelerator real quick and it goes in the region, so it has like a essentially a quick brake tap.
But, it almost seems like it's hitting the friction brakes and not the regenerated brakes. So, it seems more harsh versus just kind of rolling rolling through.
Uh it just quickly taps the brakes instead, which is less smooth and less enjoyable from a passenger standpoint.
Okay.
So, we're doing good. I'm going to bring us on the way back out and we'll see you at Carl's Jr.
Okay, everyone. We are headed out to Carl's Jr. as you can tell it's drier now, no longer raining. The sky is clearing up, so this is great.
Um I was feeling the last couple of videos of this. We are um indeed going to have a disengagement.
Every single time I'm going here unless I like add a cone to that corner or something, it's going to disengage.
So, cuz I don't want to damage my car.
And I think I need to go fix that problem.
I got some drinks in a bag and they kept them rolling around on the floor.
I wonder if let's just put it down the slot.
I don't know, maybe it's more conservative.
We'll see.
Maybe it like swings out wider or something. It has like smoother turns. I I don't know. Worth a shot.
Do something different. Cuz this this right in front of us to the right right here. You can't see it on the camera.
Okay, see I probably can't tell from the video.
That's the furthest right it can possibly go and be acceptable. Any further right it bumps out and I have to disengage. It's just not a comfortable uh good experience cuz you don't know if it's going to bottom out cuz it's a couple inches make a big difference right there.
Okay. So, yes, Sloth Mode is too slow for me. So, we're going to go back up to Standard Mode.
Uh it definitely feels very sloppy, very slow.
I'm a fan of going about five over in this spot.
Feels about right.
Okay, so this is a section of road I have not yet done on version 14.
And we're basically going to see how it handles. It's only a you know, this section here.
Not anything too crazy.
But, nonetheless, I haven't tried it on version uh 14 yet. Up here where that semi-truck is turning, if I came in just a little bit earlier, that would have been a good test because I wouldn't have been able to make that turn with the semi-truck coming.
However, past versions have cut this corner too too sharp. Let's see how version 13 does 14 does.
Ooh, very very close right there. I didn't like that because you can't really tell from the video, but there's a drop-off right there. If I'd have been a couple inches from going off the drop-off and like, "Yeah, it's too close for comfort for me."
I don't like that.
It's not looking that long, does it?
I don't know.
Can't see my head in the video, I don't think.
Must be it's still 10 seconds to look away as well as 10 seconds looking at the screen.
Huh.
Yeah, that must be a hard spot to turn out of this little that blind turn right there.
That ultimately worked fine. Um, it's good.
Uh, car slowed down, didn't about it overly slow down. Could tell the car was still accelerating as in the lane.
And handled that situation great.
Okay, car.
I don't know if I couldn't quite tell if my car started like releasing the brake before that car released the brake. I think like they did it simultaneously.
So, I don't know if it did it so quickly that it looked like it was simultaneous or if it just um, happened to do it beforehand.
So, it has to slow through railroad tracks prior.
I don't know if it's hard to tell if it's slowing because of this car or because of my car.
But, regardless, that was the perfect speed going over the that particular set of railroad tracks. That was a lot rougher than the ones further west of here uh, going this direction, which are smoothed out with the road and you can go over much quicker.
Okay, as you saw, it just went into a bunch of potholes right there.
As I didn't really see it till last second, either. I probably would have disengaged for them. But, you can see how this person's going around all of these potholes. My car's just going right through them.
So, that's something I don't think even AI 4 version 14 does correctly. I suspect version 15 will do that.
Which would be really nice to see.
Perfect.
Yep, that's exactly where I would have gone on this roundabout.
Okay, I don't know what was going on right there.
I don't know if you saw the wheel jerking back and forth, but that was a lot of hesitancy for what apparently no reason. I'm going to have to review and see if there's anything on the screen maybe. I'm not sure, but that was um uh something I never saw in 12.6.4. It's that type of hesitancy on what appeared to be a clear open road.
Okay, let's see how it just does going into the parking lot. I suspect it's going to go all the way through and not find a parking spot again. I'm only going to do this for the video. I don't actually like it auto parking.
Nine times out of 10 the auto parking has sucked for me.
I um once I'm done kind of making videos, I'm going to just park myself most of the time because it's in in my opinion it most of the time it is not good. Maybe for superchargers it would be good.
Okay. Okay, I changed my Okay, this time fine. Perfect, that's I might have parked in that. I decided to be away from the cars, but these parking spots are so wide here.
It's fine.
And yeah, that that See, that was one of the best park jobs I've seen.
I it's not saying much because nine out of 10 again are they suck.
I I'm not even exaggerating. Maybe maybe four out of five suck. So, one two out of 10.
Two out of 10 are good.
So, yeah, that that's as good as it gets in terms of parking. So, I don't know.
Let me let me know what you guys think.
I just wanted to kind of get some additional video footage out just to give you some something to look at look forward to until they fix a few of the bugs. I think there's going to be at least a point release before this goes wide, but I really do hope by August you guys have this on your car and you're able to try it out.
I look forward to you hearing your thoughts and we'll see you in the next video. Thanks for watching everyone. Bye.
