Why do I keep choosing the same patterns?

Behavioral patterns are repeated, predictable ways of thinking, feeling, or behaving that become automatic over time, often serving as temporary survival mechanisms that reduce discomfort and provide familiarity. We continue these patterns due to four main reasons: emotional vulnerability and chronic stress make us more susceptible to falling back on familiar behaviors; reinforcement of previous behaviors creates evidence that the pattern works; core beliefs about ourselves and others provide justification for continuing; and systemic hopelessness makes us accept patterns that institutions tolerate or reward. To change patterns, interrupt them by asking 'Is this effective?' rather than 'Am I justified?', understand what problem the pattern is solving, and replace it with healthier alternatives that serve the same function.
