We Bought a 40 Year-Old Drag Car (700HP)Added:
We just bought this 40-year-old 750 horsepower drag car. Why? Well, because a bunch of no-name YouTubers decided to challenge us to a drag race where you win not only bragging rights, but respect. And to some people, that's more important, but also money. Lots and lots of money. Drinking candy from YouTube babies is easy, especially when you track down a race proven 1984 Oldmobile Cutless fueled by alcohol and your competitor's tears.
But can a 40-year-old Osmobile beat a bunch of Supras, GTRS, and a $400,000 McLaren?
This car came with a pager.
>> Oh, sorry guys. Got to go win a drag race. Welcome to big time.
So, a few months ago, the boys at Throttle hit us up and they're like, "Hey, we're doing this thing called the Throttle Throwdown. It's YouTuber verse YouTuber drag race out in Pennsylvania May 2nd. You guys want to be a part of it?" And we were like, "Listen, brother, we're drag racers. Of course, we could be a part of this." Uh, but in all seriousness, we were like, "Hey, we don't get get out to the East Coast very often. It's going to be a big event, a lot of fans, a lot of fun. Uh, which by the way, if you want to come out there, tickets in the link in the description below. Come out and say hi. That'd be a lot of fun. And there's a lot on the line. Obviously, respect, bragging rights, $10,000 that we get to donate to the charity of our choice. So, we want to win this thing. However, we don't own a drag car.
And I know what you might be thinking.
Jeremiah, you guys got plenty of project cars. CJ2A is too cool. Bud is way too cool. The Camaro is broken, but we're turning that into a race car. And we got the Fox Body, which would probably be a really good drag car, but we don't want to blow up another engine. So, we have been scouring the internet, and we have found this, a 1984 Oldsmobile Cutless.
It's got big time written all over it.
It's got a 427 cubic inch small block Chevy that runs off alcohol, makes 750 horsepower. It's got a rear end that's capable of taking 1,000 horsepower. It's got a trans that's capable of taking 1,500 horsepower. And it comes with a trailer.
>> All for the low price of >> $9,999.
>> So, you know what that means, boys?
Freaking cue the road trip music.
>> Morning in Tuen, Arizona, and we're about to go check out what's it called?
Showtime.
>> That's the car's name.
>> Yeah, >> showtime. Big time. Showtime. We had a nice trip last uh last evening. Slept in a haunted house. We're all pretty tired today. But uh yeah, we're meeting up with this guy Rick. Rick has raced this car for 25 years.
>> I think him and his son started building this car after they saw the show Pinks.
>> Oh, yeah.
>> Yeah. Regardless, we're looking at a Gbody today. I'm not going to say which one, but it's it's got all body to it.
>> Wow.
>> Look at this sucker.
>> Let's see it.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Bone scraper custom.
>> Oh yeah.
>> Is that the guy who painted this?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Give me the rundown.
>> All right. So, this is your primer button. Okay.
>> Listen.
Oops.
>> Hey, can somebody turn the switch on on the on the back bumper?
>> Sure.
Jesus.
>> Also, it's it's like 8:30 in the morning right now on a Monday >> outside this stranger's house. His neighbor.
Why would he do that? Why would That's the loudest. Oh, it smells of alcohol.
All right.
R790 Pro SST. Look at that big old bottle of nitrous.
>> Nice. Nice little tubbing.
>> Cool.
>> Bathtub.
>> New battery.
>> Brand new. Just bought it for you.
>> Wow, >> dude. Rick's the guy. Got us a new battery. Yes, it's fast. No, you can't drive it. Don't ask. I like the OG factory tail lights on this 442 Oldsmobile.
Dang, dude. Oh, this is your >> You all right?
>> These two wires need to be connected.
>> Okay.
>> It's cut because I was experimenting >> with alcohol. Do you got to change plugs and oil more often?
>> No.
>> So, the vacuum pump sucks it all out.
>> Okay.
>> So, fuel in and then it shoots it in into the throttle body. What are all these?
>> Those are your injectors.
>> Oh, okay. So, it's it's delivering fuel to two places. In here and to each sort of port. How many passes do you get off a three gallon tank?
>> One.
>> Oh god.
>> Yeah.
>> So, this is a jack car built specifically for bracket racing. A bracket racing is all about consistency.
Can you dial in your 1/4er mile time and get as close to that number as possible without breaking out? That's just going faster than you said you could go. It's a way to get into the sport of drag racing if you're not wanting to spend tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars to go faster. But here's the thing.
We're not bracket racing. We're racing heads up. Fastest car wins. So, we might be able to squeeze some more juice out of this thing. And since Rick has built a consistent and reliable car, it should survive this showdown no problem. Is this a pager?
>> Yeah, that's Yes, it is.
>> Yes.
>> Rick not only showed off his beeper weather system, he had an OEM original lighter that he proudly showed us. And then he insisted on giving us a preview of the line lock system.
I'm just waiting for the cops to show up, bro. There's no way we could do this in a neighborhood in LA.
It's 9:00 a.m. in the morning. Rick's just like Monday.
>> So, that sealed it for us. This thing absolutely ripped. The last thing we got to do, load it up and get back to LA.
>> Tight squeeze.
>> Bye, baby.
Now, we have a personal love for keeping vintage race cars on the road. And nothing is more perfect than keeping this 40-year-old beauty that Rick built in his freaking own garage. This was his daily driver. He drove it to work when it had interior and a nice radio. And then he did what all of us car boys do, and that's take your daily driver and make it unusable 99% of the time. But the 1% that you do drive this car makes you feel so goddamn good that you want to do that 99% of the time. We're going to get this thing up on the lift and check out its undergs.
>> Can you hand me 10 mm?
>> Dude, I can't. I got my hands stuck down in there.
>> Hey, no problem, man. I got you covered.
>> Oh, thanks.
>> Yeah. Yeah. I always come equipped with things like this.
>> Thank you.
>> Yeah, I love cars.
>> That guy looks familiar.
>> He does, man. He loves cars. Who was that? Yeah.
>> Yeah. And the crazy thing about this whole endeavor is that it only cost us like five grand.
>> Five grand? I know this thing cost more than five grand. I was there. It was like 20 grand. What are you talking about?
>> I don't know what you're talking about.
I think you're scramble brains or something.
>> I don't have scramble brains and I'm not misremembering and I can prove it cuz today's sponsor is China.
>> Oh, sure. You're going to prove it.
Okay. Good luck, buddy. And when you have a project race car, you're going to need a smarter way to manage your money because you're going to be spending a lot of it and possibly even forgetting how much of it you're spending. With Chime, you can set savings goals right in the app. I'm talking emergency funds.
I'm talking vacation funds. I'm talking new laptop funds. Or if you're like us, I'm talking future broken race car funds, which is great because with Chime right now, you can earn 3.75% APY on your savings. Meaning, if you had $6,000 in a Chime high yield savings account, you'd earn $225 a year just by letting it sit there. No monthly fees and no minimum balance required. You're just earning money with your money. So, don't wait to start the next part of your build. Start automating your savings and make your money work for you. Chime members can also get 5% cash back with Chime card in a category of your choice.
Groceries, gas, dining, travel, and more. The link's at the top of the description or you can go ahead and scan the QR code on screen. I've been using Chime and Jerry should be too.
>> I guess you're right. Now, before we go 130 m an hour, it's been a few years since this car made a run down the drag strip. So, we're going to get it on the lift, get it up in the air, and take a look underneath it. See if we got any loose bolts, seeing if we have any glaring issues. Cuz the last thing we want to do is find that out uh after we've got a pass out of drag strip and then come back and be like, "Oh gosh, Coming down on the locks.
All right, let's take a gander.
Nice. The loudest exhaust ever.
>> I like this.
>> Oh, different, huh?
>> So, like the the notes clockwise is plus plus three compression plus five on extension.
>> Longer to go straight at speed.
>> Longer to go straight at speed. Nice.
>> Dip the pinion down a little.
>> I I wonder why he ran in a square tube on one side and then a round on the other.
>> Well, probably to compensate for driver's weight on this side. You know, this is lighter than that.
>> You're right.
>> What?
>> Good springs right there.
>> Good springs.
>> Good springs. What's this guy right here?
>> Oh, this is old brace.
>> Custom rectangle tube out of two squares.
>> It's a big sway bar fella. Yeah, these are crazy. These links, >> these are incredibly short.
>> Yeah, those are dinky.
>> So, like the tabs have been re relocated back, which is weird. Normally, you'd want them longer and these are even shorter than they were.
>> Did Is this a special? This is a special rear end, though.
>> It's a Yes. A 49 in.
>> Yeah. With a brace welded to it.
>> Yeah. Nice. For strength.
>> We also got custom beadlock wheels.
>> Yep. Just screwed into the beads. Pretty good. And I like how the some of them have extra holes.
>> Yeah. In case you want to >> Yeah.
>> Yeah. They probably just got hollowed out and you didn't have a >> Look at this big ass thing.
>> Yeah.
>> A little tow hook.
>> Yeah.
>> Some extra rubber.
>> Good for latching her down. Yeah. The amount of rubber caked on back here is a good sign.
>> Yeah. That's sick.
>> This thing's been doing passes. We should probably get parachutes, huh?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We're going to get a parachute for sure. 100%. And the parachute The parachute is going to It's pretty much going to uh just exemplify the whole purpose of this car, which is to shut up a bunch of stupid YouTubers.
>> YouTubers are dumb, dude.
>> YouTubers suck. We're a media company.
We're a conglomerate. We're on top of Mount Everest.
>> We're private equity giant.
>> We own a Panda Express.
>> That's in case.
>> Oh, not bad.
>> Yeah.
>> Better than the rears.
>> Jinx.
>> Nice, dude. I mean, >> I don't know. There's there's nothing like crazy like where I'm like nervous now.
>> Yeah. It's almost like some guy spent like 25 years, you know, like finally tuning this thing to do one thing, >> dude. Buying like race cars that have been tested on.
>> It's like buying time.
>> Yeah. Yeah. It's just like, oh, we don't have to figure this out. That's why the Trans Am's so good. They race that thing for 25 years. This guy's been building this. You know what's funny? Rick told us he watched the show Pinks back in the day with his son and he was like, "You want to build a car?" And he was driving this car to and from work and he's like, "Let's just use this thing and $80,000 of his own money and years of his life is now this."
>> Well, hopefully it did good things for their father-son relationship and didn't ruin it, you know?
>> I hope not. I hope I hope he was patient and kind. Which, by the way, you guys, you know, last time we talked about this, we were like, "Hey, we're going to put the VK into this."
>> Yeah.
>> After chatting with Rick, >> I think if we were to swap this engine out, it might kill him a little bit.
>> It might.
>> Yeah. So, doesn't feel right. And we're still waiting on parts.
>> We're still waiting on parts. Like, we're still >> races in one month.
>> Yeah. Yeah. We haven't got the parts we need to build that motor. So, I think what we're going to do, this is what we're gonna do, is we're gonna try to get as much out of this as we possibly can. Yeah. And >> it sounds like Rick was leaving some on the table trying to bracket at 10 seconds flat. He said he was only ever tapping the nitrous, right?
>> Never full pull on the nitrous, >> right? Bleep out nitrous. We don't want people to know our secret yet.
>> Got any play in the bearings?
>> A tiny bit in the ball joints and bearings, but not not enough to really worry about it. Check.
I'm stronger than I thought, dude.
Scary strong.
>> Scary freaking strong. All right, cool.
Well, uh I think we're all I think we're pretty good to go. I mean, technically, I think we should just drop this sucker down, load it up on the trailer we got for free.
>> Yeah, dude. What a come up. and then get this thing to the track and do a couple passes. Test the old girl out.
>> Let's go run what we've grown. Let's >> do it.
Okay, we are at Verona Dragstrip and the goal today is very simple. We have three objectives. The first, this thing allegedly pulls a wheelie. So, we're going to say we're going to pop a wheelie. The second is it does a 65 in the eighth mile. We're going to try to hit that time, maybe go faster. And then the third and final and most important goal, do not break, do not crash. If we can do that today, it will be super successful. And then we're on our way to the East Coast to go beat a bunch of YouTubers, including that one right there.
It's pretty cool.
>> Pretty cool. What do you got under this thing? Huh? Was it >> not a 2JZ?
>> Whoa. P RP.
>> Incredible. You guys dinoed this?
>> We did.
>> You going to talk numbers or what? I got to milk it out of you. This thing's sick. Look at that. Damn. You're not lying.
>> Oh, they got a fire. We should probably do that, right?
>> No.
>> We don't.
>> It does. cuz it does add more weight.
Yeah, but they got the carbon bucket.
So, yeah. Well, you know what? Best of luck.
>> This is all painted.
>> Yes, sir.
>> Whoa. With the with the fancy wheels.
>> You think you think this thing scares me?
>> Chance.
>> They should be scared of that right there.
>> That beauty. Now, while this is all fun and games, it's time to lock in and get serious. This is a 130 mph, 3,000lb missile that runs on a fuel that if it catches on fire, it's invisible. Here at Big Time, there's no such thing as walking into the shallow end. We're deep in diving, boys. There it is.
Where do you want me to do a burnout?
Okay, first little pass trying to figure out the car. Um, it's a pretty sticky throttle. It either it either likes to be all the way on or off. So, just getting sorted with that.
But car feel good. Didn't do anything crazy. So, uh, yeah, it's going to give a little bit more burnout. Tire slipped a little bit, Mike said on the first pass. So, um, yeah, just more burnout, more grip. See how she does. Pass number two.
Okay, second pass of the day. We did a 7second, which is pretty good cuz we're still like figuring stuff out with the car. That's awesome. We did a wheelie.
Heck yeah.
And we haven't crashed or broken the car and that's the main goal. Uh just getting comfortable with uh goodbye baby, you know. Just getting comfortable. getting caught. We're getting to feel each other. You know, this this door this thing rattles and the window rolls down as you go down.
That's something I learned. You know, some of these things makes makes creeks and cracks and sounds. These cords get tangled up. There's a lot of crap going on. You know, we just got to figure each other out. Let's go do another pass.
Let's hit that 65.
Heat.
Heat.
Holy, that's incredible. Oh my god.
Oh my god. Oh. Oh, I get why Cletus does this. Oh my god. It's incredible.
That might be the best feeling in Oh my goodness. I don't know what we did, but that was pretty good. 65. Let's go. On the money.
On the money, Phil. 65. Did it, baby. On the money, dude. 65. Let's go. Okay, so we did two full passes. We did a 65 33 and 65 flat. So, we tied the time that we wanted to do, but we pulled a wheelie and we still haven't broken the cart or crashed. So, that's very good. But now, it's time to up it up. Up the game up.
We got a nitrous bottle. Let's freaking use it. You open it all the way.
>> So, what's this rattling around back here?
>> That's probably a couple noises you've been hearing.
>> Okay, we got our nitrous bottle hooked up. We have confirmed that the system is working. We got a full bottle. Let's go test it and see if we can beat 65.
That work.
So the eight got a 6 4 3 8 at 108.8. 8 94 mph.
Let's go. Mission accomplished. Three missions, all accomplished. Now it's time to tweak this thing a little bit.
Cuz you know when it's going great, you got to tweak it a little just so you can go faster. Then we're going to get a cool livery put on this thing. So, make sure you like and subscribe if you want to see what we do with Goodbye Baby.
That's the name of this car. Goodbye baby.
>> Goodbye.
>> Deuces in the mirror. We're shipping it out to the east coast. Come hang out with us. Tickets in the description.
