I Tried The BEST NEW AMP From A 100 Year Old Brand

[00:00:00]Luxman has a brand new class A amplifier. We have it right here. We're going to show you more of that, but I first saw it when I was at Expona a few months ago. It was stacked with the new D 100 CD player and a couple other Luxman components along with some Martin speakers. Uh they also have the brand new B100 which is another Centennial mono amplifier. But today we're going to open up and I'm going to show you and you'll hear some customer reviews as well on the new L100 from Luxman. All right. So this morning we're actually doing a little bit of uh moving stuff around. We got to do a demo in a little bit.

[00:00:40]>> So Tom's got the ISO acoustics.

[00:00:43]We're going to put those under the monitors that we have here.

[00:00:48]The gold 200 5Gs. I think I got that right. and uh he wants to hear it on some vinyl.

[00:00:56]>> So I pulled out this dual uh CS618Q.

[00:01:01]Reason being is he has a blue orifine cartridge. So I wanted it to be something that would sound familiar.

[00:01:08]We're going to hook that up with the Yamaha RN2000 because he has an AS71 from Yamaha. Give him the same sound.

[00:01:16]Yeah, the amp's an upgrade, but >> pretty good.

[00:01:18]>> It'll give him the same sound profile with the speakers. So, we've been totally redoing this as we wanted to do for the past couple days. So, I already moved the techniques down right above the parasound. We have the Yamaha RN 2000A.

[00:01:34]And then there is the Dual CS618Q with the Oron Blue. That's a direct drive turntable from Duel. And Tom is getting the speakers ready.

[00:01:49]>> This isn't I haven't really investigated like taking these feet off like the spikes. Can you do that? Have you done that, Lenny?

[00:01:57]>> No, I just put them under the spikes >> because you probably can. There's a better way to do this where you can actually get these threaded and attached. But we are just going to really quickly Sorry, Allesians.

[00:02:09]>> Let's give myself >> Yeah, I find I don't usually do that. I usually with the spikes the way the new Neos are, I just put the spikes in them.

[00:02:16]Yeah, but you know for setting things up and you do want the iso acoustic facing forward for setting things up having it attached like it just makes it so much easier.

[00:02:26]>> Well, in a normal >> I could have just popped this down >> in a normal scenario where you're not changing things out 10 times a week.

[00:02:35]>> Makes total sense.

[00:02:36]>> You should just have iso acoustic and all of our speakers. You'll see like the suspension gets a little wobbly like you kind of have to >> this side first. I can come hold it for you.

[00:02:47]>> I'm professional.

[00:02:50]But you know, some sometimes you have to kind of get them sitting on them right because they'll weigh them down unevenly.

[00:03:00]See, these are all just all smooshed up.

[00:03:03]>> So you got to kind of give it some of that. That's basically it. Today we are opening up the brand new Luxman L100B, the 20 watt class Amplifier.

[00:03:16]It's brand new. But first, we're going to have to take out this L505Z, which was the one that we were giving away these past couple months because we have a winner. Tom, I'm going to move this real airship box here.

If you guys haven't seen these subs, they are like this thick and they sit against the wall or they can sit on the wall. So, we can't wait to show you guys those. But, they come with the wireless kit. So, it's like easy wife factor sub approval here.

[00:04:01]Wood grills you can get for them and a stand. Really cool stuff. So anyway, we got one of those. We'll show you that later.

[00:04:09]But we got to get this 505 boxed up. So I have to unhook it, which means I should probably turn the volume down.

[00:05:21]>> Trying to find that box. So, we just we look for the Luxman stuff and then it's like a process of elimination. But I don't see it. We can move some. There's the new rail box right there. Look how Look at that. You fit the whole sub in that box, >> which is kind of crazy.

[00:05:41]>> It's It's all the way at the bottom.

[00:05:44]>> So, we got to get to that and then we're going to be able to hook up the new one.

[00:05:47]>> I'm I'm very excited. I honest I didn't get to listen to this out exponent. I mean I you know maybe a little but um not really like I'm going to here but it is amazing. This is Luxman Class A.

[00:06:01]Class A has been my favorite. It changes all the time.

[00:06:06]You know I'll be like I'm a base head. I like solid state. I'm being very careful with this. Don't mind me. And then I'm like dude tubes are just the way. But then it's just too much. Honestly, I've been using an Ever Solo Z10 as a preamp and I've really been enjoying that. But class A amps, I like class A. The class A parasounds are some of my favorite amps.

[00:06:59]>> L100 Centennial. So, this guy's 20 watts.

[00:07:08]>> Actually, you know, if you get into like a JC1 Plus from Parasound, I think those are like 24 watts of all class A plus.

[00:07:14]>> Yeah. I mean, like, it doesn't sound like a lot, but it is.

[00:07:18]>> It's plenty.

[00:07:20]>> We were checking out an 8watt class A amp the other day, and it was great. Absolutely great. Now, if you're looking for like crushing bass, and you know, that's that's a different story, but for most people, just listen to some music, this is plenty. It'll sound so good.

[00:07:41]So, what comes in it? Luxman L100. There is Hold on. I love these. It's like two halves.

[00:08:34]I was going to have a couple more. So, okay. Here's the pamphlet. Now I wonder we should compare this because I forget that you know these were nice pamphlets that came with the 100th anniversary set.

[00:10:22]>> Yeah. And so, not only does it have the other color of the VUS, but it has the control knobs of the 707, not the 505.

[00:10:33]>> 707. You're thinking Power Quest. Yeah.

[00:10:35]So, so yeah, the uh it has the control knobs of the 507, but they're also a little shinier, which is very cool.

[00:10:45]Oh, yeah.

[00:10:47]>> So, the front kind of does have a different look. Get some ASMR. You know how they do that? Like, you know, with microphones, you do the gain, you just turn the gain way up.

[00:10:56]>> You just want me to film ASMR videos now?

[00:10:59]>> I don't know if I'm comfortable with that.

[00:11:02]Let's plug it in and see what it looks like. So, we plug it up here. Maybe we take a look. Let's pull those side covers off.

[00:11:07]>> Yeah, that if you're repacking your Luxman, you might not really pay attention when you first get it. And then if you're boxing up later, you think, "Oh, these go on the front and back." They do not.

[00:11:16]Protects the volume knobs.

[00:11:19]These side panels.

[00:11:22]Oh, yeah. The logo looks good. Like the Centennial logo.

[00:11:27]>> Oh, I got to see this actually.

[00:11:36]It's got the little class A red print up there.

[00:11:40]>> Want to see?

[00:11:41]>> Looks good.

[00:11:44]>> Oh yeah, that is nice.

[00:11:48]>> It's very nice. I want to see the back now.

[00:11:50]>> Oh yeah.

[00:11:51]>> Has Let me see what's on the front. So we got all the inputs in the input selector. that badge, power button, separates, moving coil, moving magnet, uh AB speakers or A and B speakers. You have bass treble, balance or bypass that with line straight. You got a mute function and the lua volume control right there, plus some headphone outputs. They have like these rings around here are different. Like just a little >> Oh, yeah. They are >> little ornamentations and >> it's got like little bit of like aluminum maybe around or metal around the outside of the volume knob.

[00:12:29]>> Yeah.

[00:12:31]>> But you still have >> a lot of nice details.

[00:12:33]>> Mhm. It's the smooth edges, the machine work on the top of, you know, this is very similar what you get on a 507, but you know, you got these vents and just the machine work is so perfect. On the back, got two sets of speaker terminals down there. You got the nice Luxman speaker terminals >> and balanced.

[00:12:56]>> Yeah. All the inputs have the little they come with these little like plastic uh noise stopper type things, but with Luxman you're supposed to take all those off.

[00:13:06]>> Yeah.

[00:13:07]>> So, we're going to take all those off.

[00:13:09]You have a nice ground and phono input and then Yeah. two balance inputs over there. So, it really is giving you like a 507 level.

[00:13:22]of what's on there.

[00:13:23]>> Oh, yeah.

[00:13:24]>> Any preamp? Oh, yeah. You said >> preout main in.

[00:13:28]>> So, you can use it as a preamp. You can use it just as an amp.

[00:13:32]>> You know, I've gotten into triggers and they're nice. I have Yeah, I I triggered everything on my rack. I leave my sub on all the time because it doesn't have standby. It's a TX from But I uh the the streamer is the main like the the first out of the trigger system. So, I just do the app, you know, open up the Matrix app. It's a Matrix GT1. And just turn it on. The whole thing turns on.

[00:13:54]>> It's actually awesome.

[00:13:55]>> We couldn't do that here. That'd be way too many cables.

[00:13:58]>> Yeah. The triggers are pretty sick. Now, all the inputs are goldplated.

[00:14:05]You couldn't see that with the caps on.

[00:14:06]Maybe you could, but they're all goldplated. So, there's a nice, you know, gold touch throughout the entire back. You got four line ends. uh one that has a better build. Uh which I don't know why that is. Uh maybe that's the one that you're going to put line straight. I'm not actually sure because everything would work on that, you know, bypass, but they do make one with the the upgraded inputs. I I totally I noticed one thing when I you're looking at the uh front panel and the buttons that are there and the controls that are available. And then if you actually look under the VUS, there are little lights for extra controls and they're here on the remote. And so the phono preamp in the Luxman is actually really nice. So you do have moving magnet, moving coil capability. And you have your subsonic filter, kind of like a rumble switch like from Parasound. And then you also have your loudness button, and that is, you know, like the old school, you know, the loudness buttons and switches and all that stuff from back in the day.

[00:15:04]>> That is on here as well, which is really cool. And that that's one of those things where it just kind of moves your speaker drivers with less power so you can, you know, kind of drive your speakers at a lower volume. But that is a vintage thing as well as the uh Did you mention the line straight like the separate and all that? So you can do like >> um you know separate everything and and all that. So just wanted to make sure you didn't miss that.

[00:15:28]>> Good. Good. Yeah, I tried to I tried to cover as much as I could, >> but it's just good looking. And I can't wait to plug it in and see it lit up.

[00:15:35]>> Yeah.

[00:15:36]>> Hopefully we can see it with the the brightness. I mean, it's a little it's a little dark out today.

[00:15:40]>> You can't see that on camera, but >> we're in a uh pretty rainy for days.

[00:15:45]>> So, I'm going to be letting Tom hook all this up any which way he wants, but I am going to request that we keep the Martin Oscar trios hooked up. Uh because I heard the Luxman on the Martins at Expona and it sounded incredible. Such a good pairing. I love the look of these speakers. They are just beautifully done with the wood. Now, in my head, I was like, I'm I'm excited to hear these on the Martins. Oh, yeah. Class A on the Martins will be >> Class A on the Martins is going to sound really good.

[00:16:14]>> Mhm. Cuz these are, you know, it's a very clear and and you got that brother tweeter, but it's got richness, but a very defined, but a very rich mid-range.

[00:17:56]>> He brought some whiskey which is also very cool. Uh but he got to help us get that initial listening time in on the Luxman. So we got we got to see what he thinks about this. Right man, >> it's pretty amazing. So Jared uh they they uh came by the store and we had just unboxed the L100 and I kind of had like a little listening session myself and then you know it's perfect day for you to come by cuz I'm like dude we got this brand new all 100. It's not broken in at all but it's still pretty nice.

[00:18:28]>> So I stole all those. I'm adding them to my demo playlist because they were all great.

[00:18:31]>> Uh but you have you got a bunch of vintage gear and you've got some KH Model Fives. Um, you know, you have like a nice system, but what did you think about hearing brand new Luxman with, you know, class A? It's 20 watts, class A, all brand new, all state of the yard, super low noise floor, all that kind of stuff. So, >> it's it's definitely next level over what I have. I have a good system, but it's definitely next level. Uh, it sounds I would say kind of tube- like in that the the way the transients and and the just the reverberation, it just sounds like the instruments are in the room.

[00:19:07]>> Do you mess around with tubes at all?

[00:19:08]>> Yes.

[00:19:09]>> See, I try to, but I just it never it never ends. I always get out of it. Like once I'm in it for a little bit, I'm like, I need to take a break from this.

[00:19:18]And that class A has been my favorite because it's just such a sweet spot in terms of >> you get like the zero distortion from like solid state, >> right?

[00:19:27]>> But like just the chunky and that weight >> dimensional.

[00:19:31]>> Yes, dimensional is good.

[00:19:33]>> Yeah. When I say tube black, I don't I don't mean warm and rolled off. It's dimensional.

[00:19:37]>> That presentation >> like you can touch it. You can touch the sound. It feels like >> Yeah.

[00:19:41]>> Very nice.

[00:19:42]>> And that wasn't the only thing you listened to though. We we were over here because we just kind of reset this a little bit today. Yeah, this system sound really nice, too.

[00:19:53]>> This is the Mofi Source Points, the eights. And we were powering it with the Yamaha, the RN 2000A.

[00:20:00]>> Yeah, this actually came together really well. I mean, ever solo can get a little bright. Yamaha can be a little synergistic, but when it all comes together, it's great. And this definitely was an example of that.

You've been a Luxman guy for a while. You've had a lot of vintage Luxmans, and you still have some, right?

[00:29:15]>> Yeah. Well, actually, I got rid of my last piece of Luxman um not too long ago. I had a M20, a T20, and a C or uh I'm sorry, MO2, TO2, and a CO2. and I restored those and I ended up selling them to kind of consolidate things. Uh, but yeah, I've been I've been in the Luxman stuff since the '9s, you know, back in the back in the '90s when it was the Alpine era. It was still good stuff.

[00:29:43]>> Mhm. Oh, yeah. And you were telling me you bought what? You have an R 117 and a and a CD2.

[00:29:49]>> Yeah, I had an R17 I bought brand new and I had a DZ12, which I actually still have. And um yeah, R17 at 160 watts per channel, that thing was just a freaking tank. And um unfortunately, my apartment got hit by lightning uh sometime in the uh late 90s and that was bye-bye R17.

[00:30:14]So, and it was flawless, too. That's the other that that was the part that really hurt is this thing was absolutely immaculate. Um, but yeah, Luxman just for me has always been that that shining star out in the horizon.
