Storms move through north Georgia as sunshine returns

[00:00:00]But, first let's get a check of the weather this morning. Meteorologist Nicole Hartford in for Chesley. I mean, we had some powerful, fast-moving storms through Atlanta this morning.

[00:00:08]>> Yes, these showers developed over metro Atlanta and pretty much exploded across the city bringing heavy rainfall and some lightning in some locations.

[00:00:17]They're still ongoing up into far northeast Georgia. Right now competing views across much of north Georgia. I actually saw the sun peeking out on our Truist Park camera just a few minutes ago. We're seeing some breaks in the clouds in some locations while others are still dealing with areas of patchy fog and of course some rainfall. Those showers that brought heavier rain across the metro earlier this morning are now up into the northeastern corner of the state. still producing some pockets of heavy rainfall here and there, a couple rumbles of thunder out towards the east of Helen with some areas of some moderate rainfall. But, these are on their way out and much of the morning hours will stay predominantly dry. We are not done with the rain though. This active pattern is still lingering and our setup is all in all about the same.

[00:01:00]We've got this stalled front up towards the northwest of us. It's pulling in moisture from the Gulf as well as the Atlantic, but you'll notice that that stream of cloud cover that's been settled in across the southeast the last couple of days has started to shift eastward. That's going to open the door for us for not only a few breaks in the clouds throughout the day today, but also lower rain chances. So, while yes, we do still have rain in the forecast, not as many people are going to be seeing rainfall as we get into this afternoon and evening. You'll be able to enjoy a little bit more dry time throughout the day today as well as tomorrow. Now, I know a lot of rainfall across north Georgia and we officially are above average for the year for this month. We've surpassed what we typically get in a month for May across the Atlanta metro area. So, in a typical May, we pick up just over 3 and 1/2 inches of rain. This month so far, we've picked up almost 3 and 1/4 inches of rain in part thanks to the nearly 2 inches we've gotten at the airport the last 2 days and we've got more rain in the forecast the next couple of days. So, this marks the first month since September that we have been above average in the way of rainfall. We desperately need that rain, and while yes, this will likely bring some positive impacts to our drought monitor, we're still in a major deficit for rainfall for the year so far. We're running about 5 in below what we typically see by this time of year. So, we need multiple months like this to really start to see some big changes.

[00:02:22]Rain chances today and tomorrow will be more isolated, 30 to 40%. So, I would still urge you to keep an umbrella close by, keep an eye on the radar for outdoor plans, but like I said, a lot of us will end up staying dry. Those rain chances will start to become more widespread again as we go into the end of the week and the start of the weekend, so keep that in mind for any of your weekend plans. Here's our forecast track through this afternoon. So, a couple breaks in the clouds, a few peaks of sunshine, but cloud cover is going to be pretty stubborn. By this afternoon, isolated showers and storms will start to bubble up once again. Those storms that do develop could still produce some very heavy rainfall, and especially with how saturated the ground is, it could lead to some localized kind of pooling on roadways. So, just be cautious of that, but overall, no widespread threat for flooding or widespread severe weather risk. Isolated activity expected today.

[00:03:08]Those showers and storms will kind of taper off through the overnight and will rinse and repeat into tomorrow. Mix of sunshine and cloud cover, isolated storms developing again as we go into the afternoon with periods of heavy rainfall. Those rain chances, like I said, will start to go up as we get into the end of the week with lower rain chances, with the possibility of a little sun here and there. High temperatures are going to be a little hotter, so we'll get up into the mid to upper 80s both today and tomorrow. An incoming cold front brings the better rain chances for the start of the weekend, so Saturday does look pretty soggy, but some cooler, drier air starts to move in by the end of the weekend. It looks like we will likely still have some rain around Sunday, Monday, maybe into Tuesday, but after that period, it looks like this active pattern may start to wind down with some drier conditions by early to middle of next week.
