This substitution masterfully bridges the gap between traditional gospel and modern jazz harmony through sophisticated chromatic movement. It provides a practical yet elegant way to elevate standard progressions without sacrificing their soulful foundation.

Lovely Piano Substitution Moving From the 4 to the 3 Chord in Any Gospel SongAdded:
[music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Hello guys and welcome to the music empire, the channel that spreads the gospel of our Lord and savior Christ Jesus through the challenges given us.
For some reason I'm feeling like it's been a while we learn something, but today we are learning something on this channel.
And in today's lesson I want to show you um a very nice substitution that you can do on the four or some very nice chords that you can play while holding the four chord instead of playing the regular four. Um we substitute with certain chords, but we maintain the four on our left hand, okay? Also some very nice chords we can play when the progression um is normally [clears throat] moving from a four to a three, okay? So um some few days ago I played this song um for you are glorious in the key of B, right?
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Yeah, so I want to use that same song um to explain the concept I'm coming to show because yeah, um, if you check the comment section, a few people have been saying they want a breakdown. And of course, I I intended to break down this song, okay.
I did it in the key of B, so I'll be teaching this lesson in the key of B, but I don't let the key of B scare you.
I'll take my time and explain everything. And if you're interested in seeing, um, a part two of this lesson in the key of F or even what I've done here, um, if you want me to play it in the key of F, um, kindly let me know in the comment section below. There's something I've realized about myself that the sound of keys and even the chords and and and everything actually influences how I play a song. What I'm trying to say is, um, as you have seen me play, um, for You Are Glorious in the key of B, if I go to the key of F, um, the play will end up being different because I'm in a different key, different environment, different feel. Yeah, so if you're interested in seeing my approach to the same song, uh, in the key of F, kindly let me know in the comment section below. But for now, we want to dig into this concept using this same song and in the key of B. So, I was talking about the four, right?
Uh, and the song is actually being started on a four, right?
>> [music] >> So, here's how we play here's how we have a four.
Then to the three.
>> [music] >> That's what we want to focus on.
Okay, so for you are glorious, da da da da da da. Yeah, so, um, and the four, now, I want to show you something called on the four. If you pay attention to the song very well, the four is prolonged a little. So, for you are glorious, that's on the four. And worthy to [music] be praised. Okay, so for you are glorious, there's thing you can do in this section like for you are glorious. [singing and music] Okay, so if you look at my right hand, what I'm doing on the right is is is down. On the second chord, I'm playing a five whilst maintaining the four.
Anytime you have any song that's the four or the five is prolonged a little, you can just play your four at the beginning.
Then the [music] next one, play a five.
Okay.
So, I'm I'm just playing a five two five over the four. Basically, what I'm doing here. By the way, very soon we'll be making these chords more advanced than how it is looking like right now. Okay.
So, that's one trick. For example, if I pick this local song and then what?
>> [music] >> Okay. The the same chord appears over there where you play a four over five.
So, we have like >> [music] >> then we can do do to the four then to the C over like Okay.
So, we like we have them >> [music] >> On the four, I can do a four over five, okay. So, I have a four on my left.
A four on my left and a five on my [music] right hand.
Yeah. So, that's another application of that. So, we have the for you are glorious glorious.
>> [music] >> Okay.
Then we go to our three.
Then we go to our six. [music] Then we go to our two.
Then the five.
Then >> [music] >> here is where I actually want to really make the change. We can go to the four again.
Then three.
>> [music] >> But you know what?
Um we won't go to the four and stay there, and go to the three.
And we'll just do a flat five to the seven.
And to the three.
So, let me play it again for you to see.
I'm using the same song, okay? So, I have a four.
Three.
>> [music] >> Six.
Two.
Five.
Now, we won't go to the four.
The song is about to start again, but we won't go to the four. We'll go to the flat five. This is a perfect substitution, so look.
>> [music] >> To the seven.
Then to the same three again.
>> [music] >> So, you see the substitution occurs here. What I did a four, then I played a five for the four.
But this time I'm not doing four and four. I'm doing flat five, seven. Let me play the first chord again, and let me play the second chord again. So, the first one is the four.
>> [music] >> Now, the next that that it's direct substitution is this.
Okay. Last one.
>> [music] >> versus I couldn't do.
>> [music] >> Okay. So, let's let's break down um chords.
Um so, one of flat five.
>> [music] >> It's basically an F minor seven, even though I've gotten to what our um Yeah.
Software is showing us an F minor seven, but voiced in a different way, okay? This is an F minor seven chord.
>> [music] >> So, if you check my voices very well, you realize that um it's still the [music and singing] same notes forming that this chord I'm playing.
That's why he sang F minor 7 to give.
So look, I have the F or I have the flat 5 on my left and on my right and I have the 6 flat 2 [music] 3 and 6 again.
Okay.
So [music] then to the 7.
Okay, so on the 7 I have 7 then flat 3 and 6 on the left. On the right hand I have flat 3 5 and 7.
Okay, so we have >> [music] >> then >> [music] >> Where can we apply um this concept of replacing the 4 with a flat 5 7 [music] anytime your 4 wants to go to the 3?
Very simple. Let's take a look at Da Na Se for instance.
If you don't know Da Na Se uh then it means you're not a Ghanaian.
Let me show you Let me play the progression for you to see.
Then um I will do the substitution inside for you to know what I'm talking about, okay? So there's an aspect There's a part of Da Na Se that goes like >> [music] >> So it's like every say that's a 4, okay?
>> [music] >> Oh, then go to the 3.
6 2 >> [music] [music] [music] >> So, as again, this part >> [music] >> Every say Oh, yeah. So, even if you don't know that song, Dunsin take note of the progression.
The part of the song that goes like four >> [singing and music] >> three Okay. So, at that area, what you can do is this.
Every say Oh, yeah.
Have you noticed this?
>> [music] >> You see? So, we did what? Four then we stayed there [music] and then we came to our three.
Now, we are substituting the chord.
Every say Oh, yeah.
>> [music] >> Okay.
Yeah, so that's an example.
Any song that has a four to the three you can take away that four and do flat five seven over there. Okay.
So, um I am Father, we declare like a declare So, like we are Father, we declare >> [music] >> that we love have you.
Something that you can do, that we love you.
>> [music] >> That's just one something, just totally love.
Right? But there there's a four. Father, we [singing and music] declare that we Now, I'm going to our three.
Right?
>> [music] >> So, we can put this over there. Now, look.
One, two, go like Father I can't I can't really sing. So, so let's see.
Father, we [music] declare that we >> [music] [music] [music] >> You've got to go to my church sing that place and then and play but I I believe you got it.
So, the golden principle I'm giving you here is any song that moves from a four to a three can be replaced with >> [music] >> flat three. So, the four we take away the four and then we replace it with what?
Flat five, seven [music] to the three, minus four or three.
As long as you understand this principle, what you have to do next is um check the the the the the space or the interval that you have to execute what I'm talking about. Either very fast or take your time and do it.
Okay? Yeah. And like I said, if you want to see the the breakdown of um or another version of the "For You Are Glorious" in the key of F, kindly indicate in the comment section below.
And uh I'll work on that for you, okay? I want you to study these chords and sit down this week, ponder over the progressions you have learned, and see how best you can apply it in other gospel music.
Um so that your church play will improve.
Yeah, so that your church play will really improve to the glory of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus.
God richly bless you.
