BRICS membership requires unanimous approval from all existing members, meaning India's opposition effectively blocks Pakistan's entry into the bloc. India has consistently vetoed Pakistan's BRICS membership requests due to security concerns, including Pakistan's alleged support for terror groups that have conducted attacks in Kashmir and other parts of India. The 2023 Johannesburg summit established that new members must have diplomatic and friendly relations with all existing BRICS member states, and founding members decide on expansion through full consultation and consensus. This creates a structural barrier for Pakistan, as India's opposition alone prevents its accession regardless of support from other BRICS nations like China and Russia.

India Pakistan Tensions Escalate Over BRICS | Full Report | Latest News追加:
As India hosts the bricks summit, one question is on everyone's mind. Will India once again block and veto against Pakistan's entry into the bricks.
Foreign ministers from BRICS nations are arriving for the bricks summit to be chaired by Indian external affairs minister SJ Shankar in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, Iran's foreign minister is also expected to pay a visit to Prime Minister Modi to explain the current geopolitical crisis, attacks on commercial shipping and the West Asia war. But the big question for India remains over Pakistan. India is the chair of the bricks this year. Still Pakistan has once again been pitching and requesting to be granted permission for entry into this economic block.
Speaking to Russia's past news agency.
Pakistan's ambassador to Russia Fzelnia Tmyazi again appealed to Moscow to appeal to India to allow Islamabad to join the bricks. The Pakistani diplomat was quoted saying, "Pakistan is a natural partner of bricks. Only one country opposes Pakistan's accession to bricks. No other country has any objections to Pakistan joining bricks."
Of course, the one country he means is India. In fact, Indian press information bureau has been fact-checking various numerous social media posts by Pakistani bot farms over India leaving the bricks and Islamabad getting entry. This is the same kind of fake news propaganda that Pakistani bots and officials were spreading during the war last year when Indian military was hammering Pakistan.
>> It's all over the social media.
>> The fact is that India is the chair of bricks and will also host the bricks leaders summit to be chaired by Prime Minister Modi later this year. Today bricks accounts for 40% of the world's economy and 45% of global population with India and China the biggest growth engines in the world today. For years however Pakistan has been making such appeals repeatedly to enter bricks and for years India has simply been shutting the door on its notorious neighbor.
This is a report from Al Jazzer back in 2023 when Islamabad made a formal request to join this group. Even back then, India had vetoed and blocked Pakistan's entry. While the bricks admitted multiple new members including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia and of course Iran. Since the start, BRICS claims to be inclusive, which means all decisions need to be unanimous. Thus Pakistan knows despite China's backing it cannot gain entry without India's approval. India and China are founding members of bricks along with Brazil and Russia even South Africa had joined later. Hence the Pakistanis have been trying to woo India's strongest ally the Russians to build this consensus. Ahead of bricks foreign minister's summit in India.
Pakistani ambassador to Russian news agency TAS stated quote Pakistan is a member of the SEO and India is its member as well. Therefore Pakistan can and should be a BRICS member. All other countries with the exception of India have expressed a strong desire to see Pakistan as a member nation. Our news report on India China tensions was ranking among the top five in Google news videos. I showed Patal. Subscribe to Incon News for the most informative news content. Now remember, no country will openly say that they do not want Pakistan in the group. But back in 2024, it was during the brick summit in Kazan, Russia that Putin helped break the ice between Prime Minister Modi and Xiinping which eventually eased the India China border military standoff. Even then, Prime Minister Modi had declared that while India is open for bricks expansion, any decision must remain unanimous. Prime Minister Modi had declared India is ready to welcome new countries into bricks as partner countries. In this regard, all decisions should be taken by consensus and the view of bricks founding members should be respected. The guiding principles, standards, criteria and procedures adopted during the Johannesburg summit should be complied with by all members and partner countries.
Now, a year earlier in 2023 at the Johannesburg summit, the BRICS members agreed to quote new standards and criteria for BRICS membership expansion.
Now, this document clearly stated that any new member must have quote diplomatic and friendly relations with all existing BRICS member states unquote and that founding members will decide on expansion based on full consultation and consensus. So Pakistani social media users saying that India cannot block its entry is just untrue. India has been laying the groundwork to keep Pakistan out even before Islamabad made a formal request to join this group and India has been fully justified in blocking Pakistan's entry. Pakistan's active hand has been proven behind multiple terror attacks in Kashmir and the rest of India. Concrete human and electronic evidence links Pakistan-based Islamist terror groups to multiple attacks from 2001 parliament attack to 2008 Mumbai and now the Pelgam attack last year which actually sparked a 4-day India Pakistan war. In fact on the eve of the brick summit New Delhi called out Pakistan's crossber terror in Kashmir and exposed how China is actively helping Pakistan protect such terror organizations. India soon to be the world's third biggest economy also does not want a failing economy like Pakistan to enter and dilute the development agenda of the bricks and push its own fake propaganda and Kashmir narrators.
We have already seen how Pakistan with the help of China tried to dilute the SEO statement against the pelgam terror attack and attempted to remove references to Pakistanbacked terror group TRF in UNC statements condemning the Pelgam terror attack in Kashmir. Now you just cannot straighten a dog's tail and a zebra cannot change its stripes.
So expect Pakistan to pedal its own fake propaganda if it ever gains entry into the bricks.
There is another bigger question. Is Pakistan just a US puppet or is it really a Chinese puppet? It's really unclear and it depends on the day of the week. But BRICS is viewed as an alternate to the US controlled G7 and Western economic networks. In fact, BRICS nations are now increasingly moving towards trade in national currencies away from the US dollar to protect themselves against unilateral and whimsical US sanctions. So having an American puppet means Islamabad would try and do everything to stall the development goals of the BRIRC nations.
The New Delhi Summit is India's first major event under its current chairmanship of the group. No doubt it sets the stage for the bricks leaders summit to be held later in India this year. It would be interesting to see with the Chinese president Xiinping visits India after Prime Minister Modi himself attended the SEO summit in China last year. The visuals of Prime Minister Modi handinhand with President Putin and Xiinping sent shock waves to Washington and we saw Trump immediately tone down his attacks on India over trade and tariffs. But for Indians, another set of visuals completely went viral when Prime Minister Modi and President Putin walked by ignoring the Pakistani prime minister standing in the background. So does Islamabad really think it can woo Moscow away from New Delhi? Even when US tariffs couldn't break the India Russia bond, then there is no way Islamabad could ever imagine to do so. Even Pakistanis believe their entry into the bricks is challenging.
A foreign policy analyst Mohammad Fzel was quoted in the media saying the path forward for Pakistan now is quite challenging and a long one. It involves a significant degree of politics among the founding members on induction of new members. Pakistan's case is particularly beset by Indian opposition which could depend on the health of the India China relationship. During the brick summit last year in 2025, Brazil laid out the red carpet for Indian Prime Minister Moni with a state visit and bestowing the country's highest civilian honor to the Indian Prime Minister. During his address, Prime Minister Modi made it clear BRICS must remain united in condemning terror in all its forms. Modi stated, "We cannot weigh the victims of terror and the supporters on the same scale. Condemning terror must be a principle not a convenience. The BRICS declaration also condemned the Pelgam terror attack by a Pakistanbacked terror group in the strongest terms. It stated all those involved in terror activities and the support must be held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with relevant national and international law. With bricks adopting such a nononsense approach on terror, what do you believe? Should India continue to block each and every attempt by Pakistan to join this group? Leave a comment with your opinion.
