Maple Love ~ ππ Seedlings update!Added:
Maple family, what is good? Okay, so today is the day I'm going to go over the seedlings that came through last year.
And so this will be their second year of growth. And I'm going to go through some of the ones that have come through this April, this springtime, and have a look at what kind of interesting traits the seedlings are showing uh from last year and this year.
Okay. So, I'm going to start with the ones from last year.
Um, they've all still got their labels in.
So, this one came from a beautiful Asakazuki mother tree. It was in the garden center. I asked if I could take some of the seed. They said I could take as many as I wanted, so I took as many as I could.
and the variety of different traits I got from the seedlings that came through on that tree was just amazing. So many different lovely looking seedlings came from that tree. Um, so it's you can see it's got an Sakazuki type leaf.
I'm liking the red margins on this one as well. I'm just going to let it grow.
Um it's got a bit of a red bark.
Uh so yeah, just see what happens with that as it keeps growing really. Um this one came from the same tree.
Um what else we got?
Even this one that came from the same tree as well.
This one came from the same tree.
Let me just turn around. Hold up.
So, this one's got more of a serrated edge.
So, as you can see, there's a lot of different traits.
Quite a lot of cultivars I've grown seed from.
Vast majority of the seedlings that have come from it have been very similar.
Um, like you look here, that's just like a sea of of green.
Trying to see what So, yeah. So, it's between that bamboo stick and that one there. So all these here are the label faded on that. So this one's going to be a mystery. Um but yeah, there are certain culivars that do show a lot of the same traits.
So when you do get a tree that gives seed that produces different traits, that's a really good one to experiment with.
and grow seedlings from.
And what else is that?
This one's a tray one seedling.
Okay. Yeah, serrated edge on that with a bit of a red margin on the outside.
This one, I don't know if it's going to make it or not because it's the cambium's been stripped by a slug or a snail, but it might make it.
I've got some that have looked like this that have made it.
We will see. Uh what's that? Akashika Tatsu Sour.
And this is another one from a sakuzuki there.
Uh, actually go down here. I've got them in different places cuz I'm trying not to bunch them up together.
Trying to reduce the amount of slugs and snails. The more bunched together they are, there's more hiding places for them. Um, this is from a Trumpenburgg.
Um, yep. See how that goes.
This one's got my interest.
I've not grown anything like this before. This is from Trumpenburg.
I've given this a three star because it's so unique.
very fine foliage on it.
It's looking like it's probably going to be a dwarf type, but I'm going to pay close attention to this one.
Is there any more?
Just having a look around.
And no more over there.
Oh, here's here's an interesting one.
This is a Trumpenberg seedling from last year as well.
I'm liking the red on this. It's got a orangey red bark.
Yeah. Really a really bright pet.
It's like a really bright red.
And then the new growth that looks really colorful as well.
And it has like a um it's going to be like an upright kind of tree. There's not any other branches.
There's just one one trunk at the moment.
So that's looking interesting.
Now, this mystery one over here is growing on me. I It's not really a mystery. Pretty sure it's a Trumpenburgg seedling, but that's got some really nice detail to it.
Very divided leaf.
I can imagine that on a larger specimen tree, it's going to look really nice in the landscape.
So yeah, going to keep an eye on this one as well.
I've got a couple more there. They're sumi nagashi seedlings.
I've got another at the back, but I'll move around.
This is a tray one seedling.
My boy picked this one out. He's He's called it Jasmine Dragon.
He has a lot of fun with putting names on trees and yeah, I do too. I'm not going to lie. So, this is from the Sakazuki, the be the beautiful tree.
That was nice.
Here's another one my boy picked out from a sumi nagashi.
That's okay. Just checking the moisture levels in there. It's actually quite moist in there. That's good.
Okay, there's another one that's from tray one. So, for those of you on the channel that don't know what tray one is, that was a seed a seedling tray that fell over last year and got knocked over and there was a combination of four different cultivars. There was kujaku, there was sour chidori, there was Indian summer and what was the last? It might have been arcala.
So, it's going to be one of those four that this seedling has come from.
And we've got a moonrise ceiling.
That's a graft saladori.
Right now, here are some of the really interesting seedlings from last year that I'm looking forward to growing on, seeing how they develop in time.
I'll start from the back.
So this here is a scolopendrafogium seedling.
The fascinating thing about these seedling seedlings is they change a lot in their early years.
So, it's really worth keeping some.
Even if you think, "Oh, they're they're changing for the worst. They don't look as good."
Just let them grow on for a bit more if you have the space.
Cuz there's definitely been some that I've I've put outside the poly tunnel um cuz I've ran out of space inside and I wanted to make space for trees that I valued more. So I put them down the side of my poly tunnel.
Um still watered them obviously not to forget about them but just yeah put them outside and to a certain extent to the back of my mind I would go and water them every now and again but they weren't a priority.
And I'd walk around there and I've l I've brought in a number of them back into the poly tunnel because they've they've changed in appearance and they they've grown more and you see different different things happening. So quite a few that I've shown already on this video have come from outside.
Okay.
What's this one here?
Again, that's another scholar pendoglium.
I got really good batch of seedlings from Scolopendraium.
Let's work our way around.
This one's from the Asakazuki.
See, this one I picked up cuz I really liked the the neat shape of the leaf.
It's not looking as neat as it it has done previously, but I'm starting to see little speckles of reticulation. It's not very clear reticulation, but that was a trait I never saw last year.
So, like, as I said, changes are happening all the time.
And I'm Yeah, I'm liking the growth habit on this as well.
Nice green trunk.
Excited about that one.
Now, this came from an exact same tree.
Look at the size, the difference of it.
This was one I still am most excited about cuz of how it looked last year.
It's not looking anything like what it did last year. The leaf shape's the same, but this was like a coral pink. Like all the leaves were coral pink. I think it was all throughout the summer. So maybe it might change.
Who knows?
But this could be a slow growing type of maple.
But I'm still very excited about this one. Anything I've put three stars on, I'm looking forward to seeing it grow on. Um, what do we have here?
the soccer be. Okay, another one from that tree.
It's quite big leaves on this one.
Probably not the best choice for using as roottock as the leaves are so big.
So, what I tend to do is if there's seedlings that I don't want, I either give them away as gifts or use them as roottock. So, I mean, I can't I haven't got enough space to keep all the trees. Otherwise, I would cuz I love them all really, but there's only so much space. So, yeah, something like this I'd go on for a bit and and give away as a gift.
Wouldn't use it as roottock though because reason being for those who don't know if you use a roottock as palmatum that has a big leaf and you're grafting a cultivar onto that that's got a smaller leaf then there's a higher chance of reversions to occur and for the roottock to overpower that that scion. So there is that one.
Here we've got another scholar pendraium.
And there's some that I put a star on.
And there there some of the one stars that I've done I've changed to three stars as well because they surprised me as time's gone on.
Yeah, a bit of damage to the tips of the leaves as well on a lot of the trees because of the the weather we've had.
The wind is not a maple's uh best friend at all.
That's that one. Oh, this one looks good.
This is an Atro poreium and it's it's giving off Trumpenberg vibes. And this is one that I changed to a three star. I don't even think this had a Did it have Yeah, it had a star. I changed it to a freestyle cuz I started seeing the leaves folding over like that.
And look at that.
It's looking really pretty.
I'm liking that natural.
Trying to get a focus on this. Sorry, that movement as well.
Can't remember if I actually wired the branch on this the trunk.
I possibly may have done. I did do it to some.
Okay.
And then we've got another scolo pendolium. Very vigorous.
Look at this.
A lot of healthy growth on this. This is going to need potting up. Uh well, if I don't do it now, it's definitely going to be needed needed to be done next year. Hold up.
Let me just take this out.
So, this is what we're looking at.
So, it could do with being potted up to be honest.
I'll probably do that before the summer growth starts happening.
Um, where are we at now?
Oh, this one. So, I'm just trying to get this out.
Both of these are really, really exciting me.
So, this is from Sumi Nagashi.
I'm giving both of these three stars. So on the right we've got this upright lace leaf.
Me and my friend came up with some names for this.
Oh, what was it? Can't remember what we came up with, but they the leaves look like flames.
And then we got this one here.
So, yeah, the the leaves kind of fold over similar to the other one I showed.
I do prefer the other one, though.
But yeah, still very nice.
That's those two.
And where are we coming up to now?
What's that? No, that's a graft.
This is a Sakazuki be.
So you can see they they've all come through at the same time, but all very different sizes. So that just goes to show they all have different growth rates.
Um I need to move this amazing amber out of the way. There we go. I've got a couple of little graphs I've stuck up here as well to protect from the slugs down there.
This is getting interesting.
This is a Zangukaku seedling that I grew from last year.
And I'm going to tell you something about Sangukaku.
It throws out a lot of variegated seedlings.
I don't I don't get many variegated seedlings come through, but I say the majority of the ones I do are coming from Sangukaku.
So you got a light green if you can see mixed with like that the other shade of green and it always appeared lower down last year and it's the same this year. the higher up the the tree, there's hardly any variegation, but then I was starting to see little splotches of reticulation.
The leaf shape keeps changing as well.
So, definitely going to keep an eye on this one.
Yeah, I did prune the tip off of this as well just to yeah, hopefully see if it would push a bit of variegated growth.
So, also on the trunk with variegated types, you can see little striations and lines of light colors like a creamy color or a pink on some. That's a sign that the tree is going to have variegation going through it.
So, I'm glad to see lower down it's still got variegation. We need to find out how stable it is. So, this is the the thing about seedlings.
You could have hundreds of interesting variegated reticulated ones, but you don't know how stable they are until you give it time. Now, here is one. This is one that was left outside.
It was from Heron's Bonsai, and it wasn't looking too good.
and I put it outside.
Um I think it was like over winter and then I had a look in the spring and I started to seeing these uh variegated leaves emerge.
So this one came back inside.
And that's an aka taxi sour.
Oh, I've got Let me move this out of the way.
This is from the tray one as well. Look how tiny this is.
It's like a emerald lace type leaf.
It's tiny.
But the the foliage on emerald lace is one of my favorite on maples.
just looks so delicate and ornamental.
And this one here, this is from Sugar Tattoo Sour.
So, some interesting highlights of color going through that.
Now, this is a trunk I didn't wire. This actually grew like that.
I think there was a lot of seedlings in the tray that this came from and it's all pushed up against each other and it's just grown like this.
It's got quite large leaves, but the it doesn't throw out many shoots. So, yeah, it's got an interesting identity to this this one.
But yeah, looks nice though.
Right, I think that is nearly all of Hold on a minute. Oh, there's a couple more I've forgotten about actually.
This one's a 2024 one.
Um, I think this could be atropaporeium.
I'm not too sure, but you can tell that I have wired this one to get this shape in the trunk.
It was it was probably wired too tightly or it was Sometimes the the markings do look cool though as the tree grows older it makes it look more ancient so I don't mind it too much.
Um they're gross. There is What's this one here? Oh, this is quite a big one. Look at this. So, it's like a It's like a darker red bark and it's from a sugar taxi sour.
It's quite quite tall.
It's getting on to 2 foot, I'd say.
I think that's the tallest out of all of the all of the uh trees that I got from that last year's growth.
And there was one more over here.
Uh I don't know if this is doing too good there.
I did put this up. Um I just don't know if but this one what really interested me about this was the red tips that it gets really like a sumi uh oh what is it?
Oh lost it. It'll come back to me. the fingernail on.
Yeah, I've can't tell if the the bark is dark because it's not doing well or if that's actually the color of the bark.
I think it is okay.
But yeah, this is going to look good when when it's it has just been repotted as well, so it's probably got a bit of stress going on.
That time looking lovely.
Save that for another video. Um, okay. Now, let's get on to seedlings that have been picked out already from this year.
Since I'm right here, we have this. This is a Cascade Ruby seedling.
And I got this from when I went to BA's nursery.
I asked Nigel if I was able to take some of the seed from the trees and he gave me permission to do so. And yeah, and talking earlier about some uh trees that give off a lot of variety of traits in seedlings, I'd say Cascade Ruby is definitely one of them.
They all look different.
I mean, I didn't have too many. It was only in this this sort of area here.
And I have taken some out already as well.
But there's quite a variety of of seedlings coming through there.
So that that one has been separated from the seed bed already.
Um I have got my eye on this one here.
This one's got my eye.
I'm liking the border on there. And this nice light green as well in the middle.
It kind of stands out. So when I look at this tray, my eye sort of gets drawn to that one.
So I'll have a look at that.
Um then moving over here, we've got this is a Herand's sugar taxis sour seedling.
It's looking interesting.
Any seedling that's variegated or reticulated, I'm I'm keeping.
That is they are the traits that I'm drawn to the most.
Then we've got another one.
It's got like this pink outline with the the green in the middle.
And then we have got I think this is the one I'm excited about the most. This came from a Matsamurray leaf um in herands.
I don't know what cultivar it was. There was no name on it, but it's given this ceiling here.
And that was another tree that's given off a lot of cool seedlings. There was another It was like bright pink and white. It was lovely. I'll show you in a minute what's left of it, but it got attacked.
Um, but yeah, it's got a new leaf coming through in the middle as well. Good signs.
Yeah, this kind of this could this could well end up being like one of these.
And this is PV multiolor.
So yeah, there's a lot of similarities.
Now, let me show you. Okay. Yeah, that's just from Taylor.
Now, you know what? It might actually make it.
So, you're not be able to see anything of what the leaves look like, but they're the same size of the one I just showed you, but like a really bright white with green veins in the middle, reticulated with pink. It It just looked crazy.
Um Oh, come on.
I got here one morning and there was there you go. One of the leaves had been munched and then and then I moved it to where it is now.
Then the other big leaf slowly died off.
So then it's just left like this. But as I showed you the new growth, that tiny bit of new growth on the previous one, that's still here. And I didn't I couldn't tell if that was eaten at the time or if it was still going to grow, but it's looking like it could still grow.
So, I'm crossing my fingers that it does cuz this really looks very promising. And I kind of thought that it wouldn't make it because there was slime all over that middle part as well. And I did as gently as I could like brush water over it to dilute the slime, if that makes sense.
But looking at it, it's it's a possibility. I'm giving this chances of 50/50.
It's a bonus if it makes it.
This game's very savage. I'm I'm very used to loss.
Okay, we got another one. This has come from a sangriaku in my garden.
As I was saying earlier, Sangukaku throws out a lot of variegated seedlings in my experience.
So, this one. Okay, I've got another little seedling next to it. They were too close to each other in the soil. I didn't want to disturb the roots too much. So, I just took the other one with it.
So, we got that.
Ah, here's another one here. I do not know what this this one came from this tray here, but the again I used a marker at the time on some of these seedling trays and it was washed off.
The ones that have the the marker remaining is from a proper Sharpie pen.
So I will only use Sharpie from now on.
And this this is looking lovely.
Whatever this is, this has come from autumn red. So, it's leaning over.
Look at that.
He's looking really nice.
Um, but yeah, this this is such a pure yellow. It's like a a white yellow.
And it's got a red red trunk as it stands. So that red and yellow is them colors together are going to pop.
So let's see what happens with this.
And this is going up here. So, anything I've got up here are the ones that I'm keeping away from the slugs and snails the best I can.
Um, it still isn't bulletproof, but it's better than being lower down to the ground.
Right, I think that is it. I I'll skim over some of the the trays like like I've just shown you that one. I might separate that one and get it in a little pot before it gets munched down there cuz you never know. You go to sleep one night, you think it's all okay and then it's just gone. So, it's just taking chances all the time.
And then even putting it in a little pot and putting it up there is not guaranteeing it. So yeah.
So yeah, I just I'll cast my eye over the trays. I'll show you what's going on.
These are a Sakazuki.
These are Trumpenberg.
There's a few lace leaf ones here.
Yeah, Chomp and Pugs given some good seedlings in my experience so far.
I just showed you Cascade Ruby.
This is looking cool.
What's this one? That is coming from Oh yeah, it's another label that's completely gone.
Uh that Oh, these are all Namura from Heron's Bonsai.
He's got a huge namura tree.
So yeah, this one I'm keeping my eye on.
Um what's going on over here? That is a the pseudo saboldan type leaf. I don't know what.
But yeah, that's that's looking all right.
This is the shikatu sour tray.
I've separated quite a few from here already cuz the slugs and snails seem to love sugar taxi sour ceilings.
They must have a different taste about them.
But these just like my butterfly seedlings were getting attacked way more.
like crazy amounts more than than other cultivars that are directly next to them that weren't even being touched. So, they must have different taste.
Um, oh yeah, while I remember here is the ones that I took out of there. So this is Yeah.
Shigatu sour. Yeah, these came from that tray. I've kind of rescued these if you like cuz I don't want them to get munched.
So you can see that a lot of them have got reticulation potential.
It's just how consistent is it going to be as it grows more down here.
That's a rainbow leaf. That's That's not in the the ceiling uh tray.
That's those ones. And and remember me telling you about the Matsamurray one.
Uh so this one came from the Matsimurray uh tree at Herands and so did that munched one down there.
I took this uh these seedlings from that tray as well.
Got this one down here.
Uh this could be interesting. It's got like a white outline.
It's got like a white outline to the leaf. It's quite faint, but it's there.
I'm interested in that.
So, that is kind of up there, higher up off the ground.
The higher off the ground, the better.
Um, just one pass is the snow kitten.
It's It's doing all right. It's alive, but it's lost a lot of foliage. Um, hopefully it can hurry up with this summer growth.
But to be honest, Yeah. The buds look healthy.
So, just got to keep an eye on that.
Right onto this.
This came from a tree. Um, was it in the neighborhood close to where I live?
And yeah, it's like a a sakazuki looking tree. Had a really nice leaf shape to it.
What we got here? Are they blood? Good ceilings.
Gone into 45 minutes.
Having the time of my life. Right.
That's my miji gawa. seedlings.
Red Jonas seed.
Got a couple there from Veridus.
These are from Bartholomew.
It's a really good idea if you're interested in growing seedlings to obviously you have to get permission.
Um, you either buy them from nurseries or, you know, if you're able to pick some yourself, you know, if you've got the permission, then then what what will happen is you'll have a good chance of getting seedlings that have more diversity because of the the variation in in the environment.
That's why a lot of the the ceilings I've got from herand are just really unique cuz there's so many different cultivars there and just they're all passing on their lovely traits. What is this?
That's looking different.
And where's that coming from? That's Edna Bergman. So yeah, these Edna Bergman ceilings are looking quite um different as well.
Okay, moving on.
What's this one here? Syri This is definitely a cultivar that produces a lot of very similar seed in my experience.
Every time I've grown serious seed is they've all looked kind of similar.
Not to say they can't give out some interesting ones. That's just been my experience.
These are from Heron's Bonsai for the showjo.
Now these are my butterfly or what's remaining of my butterfly seedlings.
This was filled to the brim but very quickly they started to decline from the attack of the slugs and snails.
And then I got this elegant stray. I've just got two two have come through.
Some seed does take two years to germinate.
You can skip a year pro in that process though if you stick them in the fridge uh before so if you stick them in the fridge say you need to stratify them twice basically. So you could put them in the fridge to do the first stratification, take them out, let them get a bit warmer again, and then naturally stratify them if you are in an environment where it does get cold enough. Just leave them outside naturally over the the winter months.
Um, japonicums are known for that.
And um, shuranum as well.
What do we have here? This is Sangu Kaku.
This is from a garden center. Sangu Kaku.
I remember I picked the uh I picked these seeds off with my son. I remember uh these are blood good in this little thin strip here.
Then we've got a Sakazuki here.
And this is the Heron's Matsamurray uh section here all along there.
I did take out a lot of the better looking ones, but these could still turn into lovely.
Oh, look. See, I had one coming through here the other day. It was breaking through and it's already been munched. See, this is what I mean.
Oh, look at this leaf.
That's a sakuzuki from a different garden center.
Um, what's this one? Nicolini.
So, you got a lace leaf looking one.
Yeah.
I think. Oh, let me move this.
These are these all got munched up.
These are sugar hatches sour from last year.
They all got munched.
So, I'll empty that and that will make a bit more space up here. Um Oh. One more tray.
And this is a sakazuki from another road in the neighborhood.
Some predominantly uh red leaf maples in here, but there are a few coming out of green.
Um, yeah.
So, that's that.
Okay, that's nearly getting on to an hour.
So, I'm going to leave it at that. That is the update with the seedlings in the poly tunnel.
So, there's a lot of excitement. There's a lot to look forward to.
Um, but I'll close this video off now cuz it's been going on long enough. Thank you all for tuning in. Appreciate you all as always. Answer any questions. As you know, I'll get back to you all. Um, yeah. Keep enjoying your spring, ladies and gentlemen. And I'll see you on the next video. Take care.
