our biggest reveal yet! (ep.111)Added:
We got our cabinets.
>> Holy.
>> It takes up our whole garage. So, I have no idea how we're going to get anything out of here or find anything when we go to build the cabinets. But they're all here. They showed up two days ago. And when they did show up, uh, a lot of them were damaged. And the damage was not there when we saw them a week ago. And, uh, >> there's a pattern. Okay. There's there's a pattern.
>> They all have forklift damage. So, I don't know who decided that they should move really custom cabinetry with the forklift, but they did. And so, for the past two days, we've been dealing with just just that.
>> We we basically told the logistics company just just just stop just stop.
And we grabbed our trailer, we grabbed our truck, and we just drove half of them home ourselves.
>> Yeah. They didn't get all of them in the truck. So, yeah, we've been going back and forth picking the rest up, but they're here. They might be some damage, but they're here.
So, uh, fun never ends. So, I would really love to upgrade our kitchen.
That's our kitchen setup back there. And to do that, we do have to start from the ceiling because we didn't put drywall up here. We decided that we're going to do wood paneling. this with paneling because we're recreating the old paneling that was in the old house. Do you remember?
And honestly, I think we can get this all up in a week. Nick doesn't think so, but I think so.
>> I'm the builder and in order to put up wood paneling on 11 ft ceilings, >> it should be done in a week.
>> We'll see.
>> Will we do it?
>> We'll see. We're going to try our best.
What's first step?
>> Protect the floors.
We only bought one roll cuz we thought that's all we needed.
>> Should have bought two.
>> Should have bought four.
>> That's okay. This will be enough for today just to kind of get started.
>> It's going to be >> now scaffolding.
>> Oh. Oh. Oh.
>> I teleported a bit, but I have a scaffold now.
Tada.
>> Jack, can we use the laser? Can we use your laser?
I can use it.
Jack recently got a hold of our label maker and he's starting to treat them like we're on a job site or something. You guys rarely see me out of my work clothes. And that's why when I'm off, I really just like to get out of my work clothes and just put some nice clothes on. That's why I'm so excited for today's sponsor because it is Quint. If you haven't heard of Quint before, they make everyday essentials that feel simple and effortless. They have everything from clothes to bedding to kitchen items, and everything is designed to mix and match and also actually live in. Some of my favorite pieces I have been wearing over the past few months is one, the Mongolian cashmere sweater. I have it in brown here. And the featherless quilted puffer vest. I have it in green. And after wearing these for the last few months, I can say they're very warm. They're very comfortable, not itchy at all. And I've just loved layering them. I layer them together a lot. I layer them with a lot of other pieces in my wardrobe. And I've worn them in the winter and now I'm wearing them in the spring. But the absolute best part about Quint is they work with top quality factories and by working with them directly, they are able to cut out the middleman. That means you get premium materials without the high price tag. And all of their partners follow safe and ethical practices. So if you guys want to try out Quinc's essentials, be sure to go to quint.com/nafips.
You'll get free shipping and also 365day returns. Also, they're available in Canada now. So, just be sure to go to quint.com/nafips for free shipping and 365day returns.
>> So, as always, we got a lot of things going on here. Number one, when I designed the metal, I miscalculated and I designed it kind of crooked. So, our whole ceiling is like this.
>> Does that kind of make sense?
>> It gets bigger.
>> It's like a wedge, you know? You can't see it to the naked eye, but when you start to put the paneling in, you'll see it. So, for that reason, we got our little laser set up. Our first line needs to be a little bit offset, tapered, and then we'll kind of build out from there.
It You ready? You ready? You ready to do it?
>> Yeah.
>> You ready to do it?
>> I'm going to put wood back on the ceiling.
>> Let's do it. Get the wood.
>> Only one side will go anyways. It's all good.
>> You need me up there? Of >> course.
Did I cut it the wrong way? I cut it the wrong way. Oh, wait.
Ah.
>> I think we're just going to have to put a lot of cocking in. The drywall is also a bit crooked.
>> Okay.
>> Just from the wall being the wall.
>> That's okay. We'll put it in there.
>> While Nick is up there, I'm making tea.
I'm making vanilla tea with honey. How's it going, Nikki?
>> So, so >> I don't know if you guys remember our metal straps we had to put in order to get this clar and also get our crazy overhangs.
They weren't fun to put in and they're also not fun to work around. Hopefully nothing falls off.
That should be good.
It's in there.
>> Woo! Those look so good.
>> Oh, good.
>> I like it.
>> Good.
>> Nice.
>> Okay.
>> I think it looks pretty.
>> It's too difficult with the straps in the way.
Next one.
>> Unlike our sophets outside where all the boards came at various different lengths, these boards all came at one length. So, we are trying to offset them the best we can with the first piece.
So, we'll have some little pieces, some big pieces, some small pieces just so we don't get that, you know, that joint.
Otherwise, it'll just be the same joint all the way across. And so, we're trying to fake them being different lengths.
I'm a talented lady. I can cut with my left hand.
Thank you.
Sir, it is not safe for puppies out here. Is not safe. Come here, sir.
>> He says he likes to participate. Mom, >> this is why I put a heater in the bedroom. So, you go hang out there today. Benson's there. I can see him on the in the pillow.
So, because our house is it's still old, like it's it's new, but it's old at the same time where our fireplace is very leaky and we have >> the airflow.
>> We got airflow >> that come Yeah. comes from the top of the fireplace. And so, we're going to use >> some backer rod >> rod which was used for the windows to go around them. And we're going to shove this in there. So, we're just cutting a whole bunch of pieces. I'm going to braid it. See if I can make it nice and chunky.
>> We need like a two and a half, three inch one, but they don't sell those readily in Canada. So, we're just going to braid it, make our own, and hopefully it works.
>> Yeah.
>> Yep.
>> The problem with the brown one.
>> That's okay. We'll just do it bit by bit and then we'll go back and move it around.
Didn't think I need to bring up my braiding skills for this though.
>> Honestly, that was the only idea I had to like find a, you know, a tube that make that's big.
>> Mhm.
>> I don't know where to buy one.
>> I'm done.
Look how pretty it is.
>> That's awesome.
>> My braid.
Let's see if my braid works. Does it work?
>> I think so.
Dang. I'm not going to lie to you. In some spots, like the gap is so big. I don't know what to do.
>> Maybe the leftover there's leftover braid. Shut more. Shove more in there.
>> I might have to like double up.
>> You used it all.
>> I know. The gaps in here were so big.
>> Crazy, right? That's awesome.
>> Yeah. Thank you for making it.
It's a very good quality braid.
>> You're welcome.
>> What a fit, Jen. Thank you.
>> You're welcome.
>> Okay, sweetheart. We have uh somehow managed to achieve three rows. Woo!
And we're almost done with the metal bits. So once we're done with the metal bits, it'll be so much faster.
>> Yeah.
>> Let's move the scaffold from here to over there and continue.
Thank you.
Last one.
>> When it all fits, it's just so satisfying. I am going to say planks like a million times easier than herring bone cuz it just corrects itself. The line, too. It's so nice. It's so straight. One more nail. Two more nails and then we're good.
Bing.
>> Yay.
>> We're done.
>> We did pretty good progress today.
>> Yeah.
>> It looks great. It looks amazing, >> right?
>> Does it look like the old house yet?
>> It looks good.
>> Hard to see cuz it's getting dark out, but >> we'll see you tomorrow.
>> See you tomorrow. Good morning.
I think today is going to be a amazing day because we don't have any more metal we have to nail into. This is all wood and we got the hang of it.
>> I think we're going to be fast. I think we'll get all the way to this end. Like I think we'll get the majority pumped out today. I don't know if you can see that little cord right there.
Well, it does have a purpose. We decided when we were doing all the electrical for the home that we were going to put some LED strips on the bottom of the window that would shine up into the ceiling so it' be like highlight the wood up there. And uh that is one thing we have not even researched once.
We're going to cut our first hole. It's really difficult because I don't >> Sorry, I can't see you.
Your bed was cut off.
>> That's okay.
The the message was still the same.
We're doing our best here.
>> First light hole.
>> It is burning but not cutting.
>> Oh my god, it's on fire.
>> I know. It's not very good.
>> Uh-oh.
>> Yeah, this wood does not like to be cut.
Dang. It's like really smoking.
>> Might need to get a new one of these guys. Might be done.
>> I think it's dead.
>> Oh no.
>> I've never seen it smoke like that.
>> Well, it's a different kind of wood, right? Usually we cut pretty soft woods.
Pine, spruce, fur. They're all like softer. This guy right here, it don't want to do nothing.
>> Dang, >> that was a very difficult cut. That was ridiculous.
>> Took 10 years.
>> It's only half the circle.
>> You're telling me >> that's half a circle.
>> Okay, let's go install it. Do you think it will fit?
>> Uh, I hope it's going to fit.
>> I don't think it's going to fit.
>> Are you kidding me?
>> It fit.
>> I did not want to cut that one again. I ordered these really, really pretty lights. They're being handmade right now and they're like this like like wavy metal ones and then I did chose like a custom blue for them and then it has like a fun cord and then it's a different color top where I chose like a burgundy plate at the the the top. You you'll see it when they come and they're just so pretty. I'm very excited. I I'm very scared >> cuz it's going to be blue lights, green countertop, bright wood kitchen. Color >> color.
>> Color >> color.
>> Going to be amazing in this room.
Hate this thing.
>> Let's grab the hammer.
Good.
As if we didn't make things any more difficult, we are now cutting out a square pot light from, you know, our very difficult to cut wood.
>> Right, Jen?
>> Just in the center of this piece, too.
>> In the center of this piece, too, where the groove is going to be like a hairline groove basically now.
>> Mhm.
>> So, it's got to be cut perfectly. No, no pressure.
>> Cuz our pot lights here, there's like no trim.
>> None.
>> It's this big.
>> You tell them, Jen.
>> You chose those ones, though.
>> Who bought them?
>> You You chose them.
>> Who picked them?
>> It was actually me.
>> You picked these ones.
>> I did.
>> Wow.
>> What do you think of that?
>> You have outdone yourself.
>> Does that look okay?
>> You're a professional expert carpenter.
>> Oh yeah, baby. time.
All of our lights 2700 What you laughing at? You're a bully.
>> Stop your bum.
>> I know. I'm too scared to wear my belt.
Get a hammer hole. Not that hole.
>> Excuse me.
Excuse me.
Excuse me.
Young lady, >> wrong hole.
>> Young lady. Young lady.
>> Light number two. How's that?
>> Beautiful.
>> Good. Good.
>> Amazing. We are on our last row for today. Unfortunately, we only got to half. This ended up being a lot harder and a lot more time consuming than we thought. It is so exhausting. I don't know why. I guess cuz you're just looking up at the ceiling all the time and going up and down the scaffolding.
But I'm drained. Like it feels like I ran a marathon.
>> You're not tired?
>> I'm okay.
>> I think I did more up and down than you.
>> I think so. So, I'm just kind of here on the scaffold like hanging out. It's not that bad.
Half is done.
So, I wanted to start in the bathroom this morning because last night our marble guy came by. He brought, you know, this piece you guys have been asking about, the one that goes right there. Been asking why it's still orange.
Well, we've been waiting for this piece, so he dropped it off. He also came and he's doing some measurements of our vanity here. But I wanted to show you what the countertop is going to look like with our vanity here.
>> Wow.
>> Doesn't it look so good?
>> It looks incredible.
>> It's also going to go on the back here.
So, we're going to have a backsplash like this.
>> Mhm.
>> All the way up. And then I also asked him about putting this on the side here.
and he said we should have enough stone to do that. So, >> this whole thing is going to be like a stone wall. It's going to be so cool.
>> I know. I'm just like really happy seeing this with this.
>> It looks so good.
>> It's It's perfect. Also, last night, Nick, he wired the lights here. Only two were working, but Greg, you can you can show them.
I tried my best to get it on camera, but it looks so much better in person. These lights here, like it just the texture it gives the fireplace is just incredible.
So, I'm really excited to get the third light in today. Hopefully, we can get past our uh other pendant here.
Another quarter done. I think if we can do like 15 pieces, 15 rows today, pretty exciting.
>> We are starting earlier today. So, and there's less lights to cut. So, >> yes, just one light. Are you ready?
>> Let's do it.
>> Let's do it.
>> Let's do it.
>> Let's do it.
>> First board is in Nikki. this morning when he uh woke up, he told me, "We're going to have enough wood for the ceiling." And I was like, "What do you mean we Why wouldn't we have enough wood?" And he's like, "Yesterday, he didn't think we would have enough wood for our ceiling."
>> I was nervous.
>> What do you mean? Why do you think we weren't?
>> Well, when I ordered it, I just did like a rough calculation. You know, it wasn't perfect.
>> Thank you.
>> It was a good enough. It >> was good. Okay.
I think this belt made me 20 times more productive.
>> Uh-huh.
>> What do you think? Are we moving faster?
>> Yeah. You need a belt.
>> You need a belt. Everyone go get a belt.
>> You don't have to bend down anymore.
>> No, it's great. I also don't have to, you know, you laughing at anymore as well. It's great.
>> Not have the the butt.
>> Nope. Next.
It's on fire.
>> Water bottle. Water bottle. Water bottle.
>> Water bottle. Water bottle.
>> Okay, it's done. All righty.
>> That's so pretty.
>> It's in.
>> Look at that. Wow.
>> All three >> looking good.
>> Whoa.
>> Full brightness, baby.
>> Well, during the day it looks cool. Full brightness.
>> It does look cool, right?
>> Dang.
>> Dang.
>> You cut the last circle.
>> No more cutting. All done.
>> Woo.
It's great. This one's a softer piece.
It cut really easy.
>> Oh, good.
>> Yeah. Got lucky.
>> Beautiful.
>> I know, right?
So pretty.
>> Last one.
>> Yep. Oh yeah, baby.
>> Woo.
>> No more. Our dogs rip the biggest farts.
>> Like, it's bad.
>> Get up there. They're outing Benson and Jack.
>> I I am cuz you I heard him.
>> I know >> from a dog from a 20 lb dog like to rip something like that.
Wild.
>> I love when they fart. Dogs farting is honestly like one of my favorite things in life.
>> They're just so cute when they toot.
>> Yeah. And then it smells like absolute fish.
All right.
Watch this. Watch this.
Pencil in the pants.
Professional.
Tape measure in the pants.
Professional.
Did I cut the right side?
Oh, I got to recut this.
Second time's the charm.
Professional.
Nice cut.
Beauty.
Bam.
Wab.
Oh yeah, baby. Bam.
done for the day.
Let's go on our dinner dates cuz it's Friday night and go on dates on Fridays.
We'll be back.
>> Good morning, Nikki.
>> Good morning.
Today we have the very difficult task of hand nailing everything because of our lovely metal.
>> Yeah, we hit this last piece yesterday.
That's why we stopped yesterday because the last piece we could do with the nailer, but now it's all metal.
Not fun.
So, we're going to slowly chip away at it. Jenna made us some tea. It's going to be a good day. Just got to stand right here. And it's going to be probably the longest cut of our lives.
>> What do you mean? It >> It's just going to take a couple business days.
>> Are you serious?
>> Yeah.
>> I shouldn't have turned the camera on then.
>> Oh, yeah. It's going to be some time.
Slow spray. Spray. Slow spray. Spray.
We'll take our time. Okay.
>> Okay.
>> Okay. He's done.
>> That wasn't that long.
>> No, it wasn't too bad.
>> You overreacted.
>> I I dramatized it for sure.
>> Nice. Look at that cut.
>> Looks so >> a little bit better than our >> Don't show him. Don't show him. Don't show him. No. No. No. No. Jenna, why you got to out me like that? That was a mistake. Okay. And we chose not Jen.
That was a mistake. And we chose not to talk about it. We chose We That was your choice not to fix it. I was going to rev up the board and cut it again.
>> Uh I said we can patch it.
>> You don't got to out me like that.
That's mean.
>> That's honestly.
>> Don't fix it, Nikki. I think it's funny.
>> Beautiful.
>> All done.
>> Done. Woo. Great.
Sir, >> you're recording.
Oh my gosh. Delete that clip. You're so annoying.
>> I thought I just gave you the mic and then you just burped into the mic.
>> You're so annoying.
Ah, my arm is so tired. Jen, >> I think >> do it, Nikki.
>> I think that's it.
>> Woo!
>> I think that's it.
>> Woo! WA.
>> Now for the hard stuff.
Measure the wood in between the window and put in custom wood pieces. Six windows. You ready?
>> First of all, welcome to our downstairs where it's very unfinished. So, we use this as our cutting station now.
>> Indeed. And then since our whole room is crooked, the gap between the finished paneling and the windows, it's also crooked. So for that reason, we have to do this fancy thing of cutting it with a track saw >> to have this really nice reveal because we also didn't want a trim on top of our wood panled ceiling to cover the uneven gap.
>> So just like the floors, we're doing the ceiling.
>> Custom board.
>> I hope that makes sense.
I I'll explain it better. Cut wood. It fit nice. That's it.
Very simple. Ready?
It's done.
So good.
>> Whoa, Nikki.
>> It looks so good.
Oh, it's crazy.
>> Dang.
>> I love seeing finished things.
>> I know. Unfortunately, we won't do all of them today. We'll probably just do this one last one here and then >> call her a day.
>> Yeah, >> we got uh the special Easter Easter dinner.
>> Easter dinner tonight.
>> We're going to go do our Easter dinner and then >> hopefully we can finish it >> tomorrow quietly. It's crazy that it's been over two years now since we bought the house and, you know, started demoing it. And I almost forgot that this was the real reason why we bought the home was the ceiling, this Clara story. This is what we really fell in love with the home. And it's hard to describe like seeing it back in the home, like a better, newer version, but I think we really executed it so well that >> it's it's the original home.
>> It really does look >> Look at it.
>> Incredible.
like like it's not really like hitting me until like I see it all now of how how good it looks, how this was the vision at the very beginning of the project was was this the fireplace like this is what we fell in love with and it's back.
>> It's really back. And it's back even better because these lights, like I got to say, one of our our best upgrades to the home was putting these in.
>> Wow.
>> Like I don't think the daytime does it justice. But to highlight the fireplace like this, it's like a museum, this fireplace. You know, the original fireplace. And I'm just so happy we got to highlight it like this. We just we Yeah, we just crushed it.
>> We did such a good job with everything.
Truly.
>> Yeah. But it's completely done. Nick spent a few hours today finishing the trim on those Clare story windows. They look absolutely incredible. We're not done the trim on the windows. As you can see, you can still see tape. But >> hopefully we can get that done early next week before we start the kitchen.
>> Yeah, >> cuz that's the goal next week. We really want to start at least our coffee station here. See if we can get a mini kitchen setup or at least something better than our kitchen setup right now.
>> Yep.
>> And uh see how it goes.
>> I'm excited.
>> Just start the kitchen. Start this room.
>> I'm really excited.
>> I love it though.
>> It's back.
>> You enjoying the sunshine?
Are you enjoying the sunshine, boys?
Yes. Oh, it's warm out here.
They love it.
