US Marine Officer Reviews Was the Marine Sniper shot through a scope real? | PewViewAdded:
All right, so this video was actually shown in the Fat Electricians the Gunny Sergeant Carlos Hathcock video of was it possible to shoot straight through the scope of Cobra sniper rifle? And now I found the full video. So welcome guys to another video. If you're new channel, welcome. This is one is called "Was the Marine Sniper Shot Through a Scope Real?" by PewView. Basically, what I did was I just typed in Scott scope shot by PewView and this popped up. So I hope this is the right one, but I'll admit I skipped ahead just like a few skips ahead and I saw Fat Electrician and also where the glass shattered with that like fake skull behind and that was shown in the video.
So this has to be the video. So without anything else, let's jump right into it.
>> [music] >> Never smoked a cigar before.
You know something? Mhm. This is the best job I ever had.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's important part.
Save the cigar, man.
>> There he is.
Fat Electrician Oh yeah, the shot to the canteen. I'm hit.
It's just water.
I like the white feather too, man. He's got the detail.
Carlos Hathcock one of the And that was a nice little skit at the beginning. I like that. most well-known snipers in Vietnam. He is the greatest sniper of all time. He's got 93 confirmed kills and approximately like 300 probable on top of that. Yeah, and that earned him a pretty hefty bounty of about $30,000, which is $250,000 today? Approximately.
Out of that bounty, one of the guys that tried to get it, what was his name? His name was Cobra. He was a Viet Cong counter sniper and he tried to collect.
Yeah, that didn't work out.
>> Oh guys, actually so this past Friday, so actually no, no, more than a Friday ago a few days ago I finished the book, guys. Marine Sniper. I got it off of Amazon and I read the entire thing.
Amazing. 10 out of 10. Also, there was another book called Silent Warrior by Charles Henderson. So exactly the same author and it is about Gunny Sergeant Hathcock and everything like that. So I guess there's going to be more details about it. So I actually did order the other book Silent Warrior today and it's coming in about like 3 days. So I'm really looking forward to forward to that book. But if I can give a book recommendation, guys, this one.
All right, let's get into it. So one of the best guys that tried to collect that bounty for taking out Carlos Hathcock, White Feather, was a man by the name of Cobra and he was supposedly their best, but Carlos Hathcock was just a little bit better because they ended up matching, seeing each other at the same exact time. Carlos Hathcock saw the glint of his scope and fired first, shooting all the way through the scope and killing Cobra. One of the best stories of all time. If you guys want the entire story, he's got a video on Carlos Hathcock. Go check it out. I'll put a link in the description below. But That's what made me come here, actually.
So it's the other way around. Today we're going to try to recreate that shot. This has probably been tried many times. I've seen it done with red dots.
I've seen it done with modern scopes.
I've never seen it done with the original Winchester Model 70 and the almost correct scope that Carlos would have had against the actual gun and actual scope that the counter sniper would have been using. Now we're going to be using almost the correct ammunition. We're going to be using the 170 grain boat tail FMJ and we're going to be shooting that through the three times Mosin Nagant scope. In addition to having all the time correct stuff >> Scopes aren't cheap, too, man.
>> of upgraded camera equipment, brought out ballistic high speed to show you guys everything super >> Gentlemen in motion. We needed some slow mo around here. Absolutely. So we showed up. Like you said, people have tried to redo this before. We know the MythBusters did it. Unfortunately for them, just at the time the high speed just wasn't quite there. Yeah. So high speed technology 17 years ago was a potato, pretty much. So we brought our potato, which is a little bit better.
100,000 frames a second. So we should see exactly what goes on ballistically when a bullet enters the scope, assuming you can get it there.
Yeah, hopefully we'll get a clean pass through and then the ballistic dummy lab head on the other side will absolutely explode and have some pretty cool high speed footage, but let's go find out.
Let's do it. Okay, so right here we got a Russian Mosin Nagant chambered in 7.62 by 54R and then we got the original times three Russian scope. Super I just want to I just want to shoot that thing, man. I mean the only thing I've shot is a.22 rifle and the M16 and also an M27.
But there are so many things I just want to shoot and I want to own own all those rifles, too.
I want a game room and I want a gun room.
Well [snorts] done. This and a knife room. is it requires a lot of gunsmithing and I can't gunsmith. But if you want to gunsmith, you should go check out sdi.edu. I'll put a link in the description below. I just Oh my god, the hammer and sickle on it. It's how you know it's authentic.
This is fully Russian and you know that's Nick's favorite place.
It's probably your favorite rifle. Don't give that piece of [ __ ] away from me.
I I obviously I I know I know Nick's Fat Electrician his view on communism and everything. So I did catch that joke. So he didn't want to put the Mosin here and be looking down the barrel of a rifle while I'm trying to make this shot. So we instead took another scope, the same thing. This is the same Russian times three scope. Got it put on a 2 by 4 and then we got a ballistic dummy lab head sitting right behind it. So we got the gun set up on a table. I got a bipod on it, a bag. We are at an entire 723 Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. 723 yards. We're going to see if we can make that shot. All right, we got a little teeny red dot right here. I'm going to see if I can land a shot on that before I go for the scope cuz I don't really want to wing this thing and hit the head. I want to actually get a centered shot through here to see if it's going to make it through all the glass and still have enough energy to you know, take out the ballistic dummy lab Like I said, this is a whole 24 yard shot. Let's see how close we can get it. Let's see how close we can get it.
Ready? Yep.
Oh! [ __ ] nailed it, dude. You should do another one right in that spot.
Whew.
All right, so we got our two shots kissing right here. So uh He can shoot, man. we could get somewhere at least close to the middle of that. So All right, so in our attempt to be MythBusters-like, we've got two Phantom cameras set up. Got a wide angle here so we can see the entrance of the bullet, what comes out the backside if anything and then if the head does pop, we'll get some of that as well. And then over here we got ultra high speed, ultra close up, just under 100,000 frames per second. So each frame of this video is 10 microseconds in time. So should get a nice bullet entrance and if anything comes out we're going to see it really easily. Everybody good? Yep.
Buddy, was that it? I see red.
Holy [ __ ] Oh.
Oh, that was clean, dude.
>> It's not even damaged.
Dude, the tube is completely intact.
Damn.
What are you looking like over here?
Oh yeah, he got messed up.
>> get an exit. I'm curious to see what that's going to look like. He he is a definitely becoming a pirate, but there's no [music] exit. I'm curious to see what that high speed is going to look like.
That's gnarly.
Nice. Let's see the scope whip. Perfect.
Dude, he shot it really well, too.
Look at that Look at that ignition right there. That's wild. illuminates the space. You can see it like flexing and twisting, the bullet tumbling.
So So we didn't need armor piercing to do that. That's still wild. I wonder if armor piercing would make it through the head. We get an exit with a head. Right.
Oh well, we can see what happened here if it did go through.
Doesn't look like it made it through his head, but this hole is Just split it.
I think he might That was perfect.
That's amazing. That was the shot.
First time, dude. We didn't need to do it again.
>> Good job, dude.
It's a It's a little low. You didn't even touch the sides.
>> [laughter] >> Wow, that Damn.
Look how just mangled around the eye is.
Yeah, and also on top of that, what's also really amazing in my opinion as well is it's explained in the book and also him, they were literally still moving and they as soon as Carlos Gunny Sergeant Carlos Hathcock saw the glint on the scope, they immediately turned. So this wasn't like, "Hey, let's sit in.
Be still for a moment." This was "Okay, boom." And then they shot. So that means the probably saw like this flash in his scope for like a millisecond and then he was dead. And the other flash he saw was God at the pearly gates.
Disgusting. I mean the entire I mean he's fractured all the way back. I mean he was 100% dead. Yeah, his head's gone.
Doesn't hurt at all.
>> [laughter] >> His His brains just filled with glass and copper.
>> Well, he's a communist. His brains were full of [ __ ] anyways.
>> [laughter] >> And you can see the bottom hole. Get in there. Get in there. How deep is that?
It's 8 in or so?
>> More than my finger.
Is that a lot?
Huh? Is that a lot? According to my wife.
Dude, look at the wound cavity [laughter] going up. Like it just emptied out everything that was upwards.
That's insane. It stopped like right back in the end of the skull. Um never getting my hands not red again. I wonder how much I wonder how much velocity it really lost with breaking the glass. I think the bullet was like essentially a low-power shotgun shell after it went through that. It just shards of glass and lead.
But it was enough to I wonder what the heat signature would have been on that.
Like cuz it looks like it melted the ice out here.
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Unless that's just a little shard of micro glass.
And you hit him with the pocket sand.
Good old pocket sand.
How much How much velocity you think that round lost going through the scope? Probably quite a bit, but there's only one way to find out. Another ballistic dummy lab head. We're just going to straight up shoot this thing in the forehead. I wonder how much those skulls cost.
And with a 30-aught-6 without any scope interference just cuz I want to see the difference. Oh, actually, you know what?
Cuz you guys are better internet detectives than me. If you guys know the cost of the skulls and also the scope that they're shooting, please let me know in the comments, man. Making Carlos proud in three, two You didn't even say one.
>> [laughter] >> Slight difference.
Slight difference. Slight, huh? Before we begin, we need to thank today's sponsor and tell you why that sponsor is relevant. One of the sponsors is going to be Guard Dog. This is a level four ceramic plate and why that's relevant is because we're using a 30-aught-6. We're going to take a 30-aught-6 AP, show you why it's the NIJ standard. You're going to shoot that thing?
So, if you guys are interested in getting yourself some decent body armor, this as you can see stopped a 30-aught-6 AP and a 62 grain 556 fairly easily. So, if you're interested in this, go hit the link down in the description below. If you want to see all that high-speed footage and the actual story behind it, go to Ballistic High Speed >> Yeah, but you're going to feel those impacts. link that down in the description below. Second sponsor today's video is going to be Gideon Optics. This is their 1 to 8 L I want that rifle.
PVO and we're going to go ahead and shoot this with a 30-aught-6 to show you what would have happened if they were using modern scopes versus the times three super old shitty Russian scopes.
So, all right. Like I said, we're going to send a 30-aught-6 through this so I can see what a modern scope. Now, this is a kind of what MythBusters did. This is where they went wrong. They used a modern scope. It's three times the amount of glass in there. So, I assume that the 30-aught-6 is not going to make it through this, but let's go ahead and prove how good Gideon Optics are.
Nice shot. Man, the fact that they're just they have the money to just keep on shooting scopes and all that is crazy.
That is insane. That glass inside of these scopes is so thick that it immediately took the round and just diverted it straight down on the table.
Also, if you're interested in getting yourself a decent L PVO, a 1 to 8 with exposed turrets that lock, this thing is solid for the money. I'll also put a link down in the description below and it'll help make sure you don't get Cobra'd.
You fell down.
Oh my lord.
I think that's the craziest head explosion I've ever seen. I bet the high-speed the face actually [snorts] sucks through the back of the skull.
>> Probably. That is gnarly.
You guys ready? Yep.
It almost looks like watermelon is so mild. Just a lot of big ideas.
30-aught-6 the [ __ ] face through.
Just looks like a water.
It's like where you just drop a rock into water. It just looks like that.
Holy [ __ ] Holy [ __ ] That's what they talk about the pink tiniest fragments of bone. That's wild.
That is a hell of a round. Do you imagine?
>> Look at that eye shot though.
Right in there.
>> [laughter] >> You get it, you vape.
[ __ ] Damn.
It's just completely shredded. Nothing left.
Well, those cameras are insane, too.
That wasn't even through the brain. He shot it through the eye and it just cascaded through the brain. To show the difference of what it velocity that scope took. What do you want me to say? Make joke.
Make joke. You funny man. Come on, be funny. Be funny. Make joke. Hey. Make joke.
You want me to say it's like some dumb [ __ ] like, oh, I'm better dead than red and but like you're red and dead, [ __ ] [laughter] Look at you. Look at you.
Oh, well. Dude, this table is super [ __ ] nasty. That's fine.
That's insane. It even blew the this thing off the screws.
What is this?
It's part of this scope. That's nuts.
[ __ ] I mean is it?
Oh, you should have kept that. We should have framed that.
I can still go get it. So, I can tell everybody in the comments, "Actually, he couldn't shoot through a scope because MythBusters tried it.
Actually, here's a scope where we did it in 4K Now, you got to go find it. 1,000 frames per second.
So, I think if you happen to have the misfortune of going up against the most accurate man probably to ever The guy's a real life John Wick. That's probably your fate. That wasn't good. I can't believe you did that on the first shot, actually. I can't either, but I mean, it's crazy that we were at Oh, one of my favorite parts in the book as well is What What's it called?
Crap, actually.
Is where he won the Wimbleton Cup. It literally tells the the entire event of it of how he was patient, how he took a shot, and also the best ways to make that shot, too. So, I highly recommend it.
723 yards and I still hit that. Well, I mean, yeah, there was that factor. I was just more impressed like MythBusters with Discovery Channel money us in a cornfield and [laughter] in an afternoon and we did it better. But they didn't use, you know, the Winchester Model 70. This thing is still one of the most accurate rifles ever made. This is a hell of a gun.
>> I'm still impressed by how much velocity got lost in the scope, but it still punched through. Yeah, there was a wild amount of difference. It was insane.
Like denis-disintegration to like a little that was barely killing you. You were still done, but I guess you you found fragments all the way in the back of the skull. That you're probably pretty [ __ ] Yeah, I mean, all the internals were inside of it. You were done. It's wild that the bullet disappeared though. The bullet disintegrated and it just had enough velocity to push out glass and shrapnel from inside of the optic that far into a skull. But first of all, it's completely possible you can do that despite what everybody on the internet wants to say.
You know, cuz he does get a lot of flak saying, "Oh, that was made up. That's not true. That's unsubstantiated." But that was literally your first shot and you did it. Right. So, I mean, granted, the shot was probably done about 400 yards and just seeing a glint and aiming in the general direction, like that was an incredibly lucky shot. I mean, there's obviously some skill involved, but that's insane that it just happened to go through a scope and it one of the most well-known shots in military history. But I think it like really proves that he was mili- Oh, I just realized he's drinking Liquid Death.
I've seen that drink many times before.
I haven't drank it before, but to be honest, if the title of a drink has the word death in it, it's not really appealing to me. seconds away from getting shot himself because he had to have been looking at him in order for those barrels to line up to go through the scope like that.
>> Exactly, which is wild. You guys want to come in here and give some I just love you guys' qualitative approach to what was the velocity drop? Let's just shoot the head despite the fact that we could very well calculate Yeah, you're over in the corner like, "Oh, we can actually use the frame rate."
>> The milliseconds Love it. HIT THE GUN. Hit the gun. So, what were you guys expecting to happen? Honestly, I was a little surprised FMJ made it through, but as soon as somebody said there's only like two layers of glass in there, I was like, "Okay, it might make it through."
>> expected it to deviate a little bit.
Yeah, that's where MythBusters went wrong. They used a modern scope. It's got way more than two layers of glass.
>> can see the bulging and the denting through the scope as that bullet bounces, but [music] it it didn't go out until it got to the backside. So, pretty darn sweet. So, this is going to be a three video kind of thing. If you guys want to see their take on the old rifles like this versus some modern armor, go check out their video. If you guys want to know Carlos Hathcock's story, go check out next video. So, you said he's the best sniper of all time. I'm sure most people won't disagree with that, but why? What's your version?
Well, I mean, the only other person that's really in the running is Simo Häyhä.
And he's got way more kills. He's got like what? Like 700 or some insane number of kills.
>> nuts. But it was like and he did it with iron sights, which you know, cool, but like quality versus quantity matters, right? Because Simo Häyhä, not taking anything away from the guy, but he was going up against 16, 17, 18-year-old Russian conscripts that were wearing OD green uniforms in the snow in Finland versus Carlos Hathcock going up against peer or near peer enemies with, you know, the same weaponry equivalent and training. And so I mean sniper versus sniper versus sniper versus somebody that's really not in the same league, you know? Like Jon Jones has like what's Khabib got 29 pro fight wins?
Right, Khabib's 29 and 0. Like if I go into a middle school and [ __ ] up five, you know, 31 fifth graders, like am I a better fighter than Khabib Nurmagomedov?
No.
There's quantity and there's quality, right? On top of that he did it in a [ __ ] jungle, not the tundra. Yeah, that's the other thing. Like it's a lot harder spotting Viet Cong in the jungle as opposed to Russians without snow camo in [ __ ] Finland. That did cross my mind. He's also got an 1893 interview where he goes over all of the details, tells all the stories, and he has got some wild stories. I think Nick and I are going to recreate another shot coming up soon. You're not going to want to miss that. And if you want to learn about that story, go watch his video.
You have a.50 cal? Yeah.
You got an M2? That's going to You got a 2-mile range? Yes, we do. Oh, [ __ ] >> Yep. It's going to happen. If If it's possible, it's going to happen. We got everything set up exactly right.
>> Yes. Oh, it's possible. I got to find that. But the elevation is going to be hard. Like the mounts you can find for a Ma Deuce is like maybe 20 MOA. Like with the turrets on top of that scope that we got, we got his original scope. We're not going to have the elevation.
>> scope even? Dude, we set it up exactly how Carlos had it.
And we got the 2500 round or 25 >> You know how he zeroed it, right? On a rock. Yeah, a boulder. I'm saying like 10 power on a rock at 2500 yards is going to be [ __ ] almost impossible.
You don't have the elevation. No, we got it.
>> have to like get a makeshift a 70 MOA rail to make that elevation, but we're going to find out. We got all the ammo and we got a bunch of time. We're just going to send rounds until we hit one.
We're going to make it happen. What are we going to call this series?
We're not busting myths, we're proving [ __ ] correct and possible.
What are we going to call this series?
The confirmers? The Hathcock >> [ __ ] told you. I just really enjoy history. Obviously, you enjoy history and Carlos Hathcock has been somebody that I've paid attention to all of his stories since I was a child. So to get the actual model set And again, like I said, we had to learn about Gunnery Sergeant Carlos Hathcock during Marine Corps boot camp, during the study time and all that cuz that was the requirement. When we do exams and also tests, we are tested on Marine Corps history, the birthplace of the Marine Corps, the birthday of the Marine Corps, the first commandant, and the great figures like Gunnery Sergeant Hathcock, Chesty Puller, Sergeant Major Dan Daly, uh uh Major General Smedley Butler, those kind of those kind of people and events.
>> Somebody I was happier than [ __ ] that I actually found this gun. And it's just If I'm going to have a.30-06, it's got to be this. It's so cool you did it on the first shot, though.
It's so [ __ ] cool you did it on the first shot.
People have been talking [ __ ] or like doubting it for [ __ ] ever and then you one try. Yeah, that's insane. Told you.
All right, until next time. Make sure you guys go like, subscribe, follow their stuff, go watch their videos on this.
Now, that was a really great video of them shooting through the scope and proving A, it is possible and also shout out to Ballistic High Speed for doing an amazing job at that as well. And besides that, I really don't have much to say, but if if they really did that.50 cal machine gun sniper, then we got to I got to find that and we got to watch that.
Besides that, that's all I got. So thank you so much for tuning in. Thank you so much for watching. Hit that notification bell so you know when to drop more videos. Also shout out to Q View for this video. And also shout out to all you guys, members, viewers, subscribers.
You're amazing. Thank you so much for your support. Really do appreciate it.
So with that being said, see you guys next time.
