The Atlantic Wall bunkers in Middelburg, Netherlands, were part of Nazi Germany's massive coastal defense system stretching from France to northern Norway during World War II. These bunkers, originally serving as German military headquarters, have been transformed into a beautiful recreational area with gardens and a scavenger hunt featuring 10 bunkers containing poems that form a hidden word. The site commemorates the liberation of Middelburg by the Royal Scots Well Tank Regiment and Manchester Regiment, demonstrating how historical military sites can be repurposed for educational and recreational purposes while preserving important historical memory.

About to be homeless while we are awayAdded:
[music] [music] >> Good morning.
Sitting in the queue channel tunnel just have some breakfast.
>> And we are here.
>> Bonjour la France.
Good morning and welcome back to the channel. I bet you thought we'd retired from YouTube, but um sadly we haven't.
We're still here.
Um last time you saw us it was the summer of 2025 and uh we're now well into 2026. We've had loads of thing hap- things happening.
Um we did get away for Christmas, but because of other circumstances we've not managed to get those videos up and on yet. Although, I think we will probably just now do that for our own reference but when we're old people and we like to watch them ourselves.
Um today you find us in sunny sunny France and we're heading for a very short break. We're going to go into Belgium and the Netherlands. It's my birthday soon.
Um so, we're going to spend our first night in Bern.
We like Bern. It's nice. It's a nice little town to walk around. There's bars. Uh sadly there's not a really nice coffee shop anymore cuz she shut down, but uh we still like it and the air is really nice and it's so quiet. Um it's just a lovely. It always feels really really safe.
And then um tomorrow we'll be heading off up into the Netherlands and we will be booked into a campsite on Middleburg for four nights. So, we will take you with us and we will see you there.
We've taken the scenic route from Bern up into the Netherlands. There was no border whatsoever cuz it was really nice sort of like country-sidy route.
Um it's beautiful scenery. Very flat obviously, but really really pretty and it is a beautiful day today. So, we are going to go to the um Delta Park storm surge barrier, which is the largest storm surge barrier in the world, I think.
Uh as I say, it's a glorious day, so it's brilliant to do it, and we will see you up there.
>> Massive.
So cool.
>> [laughter] >> Amazing timing.
Awesome timing.
You are going to fall over, aren't you?
It's going to trip you up.
Oh, we have just arrived at Stort Camping, just outside Middleburg in Zeeland. We're parked on shells.
Uh and we've got our own toilets and showers and water and sink and So, we're staying here for four nights over Castleford's day. And it's it's nice. We've got all this grass.
So, we're going to stick the awning out.
Um get the chairs out.
And possibly have a drink.
Let's have a look at the loos.
>> So, washing washing up.
>> Yeah. So, we're there.
Oh, hello.
>> Hello.
Oh my gosh, this is lovely.
>> Yeah.
Nice shower.
Nice.
>> And dry over.
>> Nice sink. Yeah.
And this is all all lockable, so we can just leave our stuff in here.
Yeah.
That's going to do nicely.
>> Leaving a squeegee in the shower for you. You like the squeegee in the shower?
For the shower, not for yourself.
>> Well, we'll see.
Cool. All right, let's go and get settled.
>> Hello. We have just come out for a walk.
It is stunning. It's too hot in the van even with the sun shades up.
>> It's not >> It's not for cats.
Uh it's absolutely beautiful. Lovely campsite, yeah.
>> Yeah, it's really sweet.
>> Lovely. As you've just seen, the facilities are really cool. Really, really nice. Uh so, we can just chill for 4 days and know that we're not going anywhere. We are Are we going to go into Middleburg?
>> Middleburg, yeah. We're 15 minutes away from Middleburg on foot.
>> Yeah.
>> We've got a little map from reception and here we go. We're just going to have a look, wander around today.
And then probably come around and have a proper look tomorrow.
>> Yeah.
I'll have a full day out tomorrow.
Potentially, depending on how warm it is cuz it's going to be another hot one.
And it would be slight, so >> On the way back from the Fort Defenses, we did something like the coastal route around Zealand. And it was lovely.
Absolutely lovely.
>> Yeah, it was.
>> Uh lighthouses and uh uh little towns were absolutely heaving cuz of course it's Labor Day weekend this weekend.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh so, it's really busy. And I've also learned today that 80 countries celebrate May the 1st as a bank holiday.
>> Your birthday.
>> Which is my birthday, of course.
And I didn't manage to move to another country, though, because of course the UK just celebrates it on the nearest Monday.
>> Yeah.
Horses.
Uh this is 5 minutes out of camp.
And we're going to walk down the river towards that bridge over there. We're just going to go and have a look at a mural. Mural? Over there? Mural? Have you Check this out.
This place is so cute.
Really nice.
Good morning. It's Kat's birthday. Happy birthday, babes.
>> Thank you.
>> Yeah.
I'll get you for the cakes.
Uh so we had a lovely leisurely breakfast.
And now we are walking back into town. We had a little quick look around uh yesterday evening.
Uh so we're going to spend a lot of the day I think in there, aren't we?
>> Yeah.
>> First of all, we're going to go see whether the coffee shop is open cuz it's King's Day today.
>> No, it's not.
>> 1st of May, is it not?
>> No, we decided that was last Monday.
>> Oh, okay.
>> But it is a bank holiday. It is Labor Day or something today. So it is a bank holiday. But I think everything's going to be open.
>> Open?
>> Everything's going to be open today.
>> Open on King's Day, which is not King's Day.
Cool.
Let's go and see anyway.
First birthday coffee and cakes.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> And we are back.
There's our block, toilet block.
And there's Spirit, all nice and shiny.
So, it's time to get the chairs out and get some lunch.
Walk number two of Kat's birthday and we've found this beautiful, I'm not sure what it is, but it's a house pavilion.
Um but it's nice, little balcony overlooking the the canal there.
And the windmill that we're going to go and walk to and have a look at that.
But it's a gorgeous day.
>> Beautiful, isn't it?
>> Yeah.
And um and then we'll go back into the town and explore bits that we've not you know, had a look at.
Right, come on, let's go.
>> [music] [music] >> And Middelburg used to have eight of these gates.
And this is the only one that's left and it's in the Louis the 14th style.
It's quite splendid.
It smells nice, doesn't it? Well, let's go.
Let's go and get some fruit.
So, this is a father and son that cast these bronze cannons.
Um, and then they were later found, one in uh, '86 and one in 2011, uh, underwater in this in the coast just off here and then they were brought back to where the father and son actually cast them originally. How cool is that?
Good morning.
>> Good morning.
>> What do you have?
>> Flat white here.
>> Um, yeah, we've ended up staying here for another two nights. So, we're going to be here total of six and six nights. Six nights.
>> It's lovely.
>> Um, there's loads to do, actually. Um, it's overcast this morning. The sun's is hazy sunshine, but it's still warm, isn't it? It's lovely.
>> It is.
>> Um, but I found for walk this morning, there's a couple of, um, bunker areas. Uh, we're just going to do it on a walk and then just have a look at them as point of interest going round. And we'll come back for lunch.
And, um, and then we'll go out again.
Got a bit of shopping to do this afternoon, so we'll walk into town this afternoon. We had a workout this morning.
And um >> Mhm.
>> [laughter] >> Uh so, yeah, it's been a nice relaxing time. It's been fantastic, hasn't it?
>> Yeah, we've needed it, haven't we?
>> Yeah. So, yeah, come and join us. We'll go for a walk.
So, we've arrived at the bunkers, and this is in uh memory of liberation of Middleburg.
Royal Scots Well Tank Regiment and the Manchester Regiment.
Beautiful little gardens.
And we are now stood on top of the bunker.
A little viewing platform.
>> There's a scavenger hunt. Find 10 bunkers in the park with a large number and a poem written down from 1 to 10.
Remember the first letter of each poem.
These letters form a word together. What word is this?
>> Yeah, they really are scattered. So, there's one down there.
There's another one just there.
There's one to the left of calf just there.
And the one we were stood on, which is behind those bushes.
Very strategic position, obviously.
And all these bunkers are now it's a place of beauty that you can walk around and enjoy nature.
>> And goslings.
>> There's some big boogers, isn't there?
Thanks loads. Little caterpillar.
Cool, is that?
I'm quite gross at the same time.
So, we've just walked for 3/4 of a mile or so through a beautiful housing estate to these two bunkers.
The previous ones that were out, the 10 11 bunkers that were there, uh were the German headquarters during the World War II.
And now turned into a beautiful recreational area. But, this area's just stunning.
So, this is the part of the Atlantic Wall, which run from uh France up to the up to northern Norway.
Incredible building achievement.
>> Good morning. Um we've just done six nights at Middelburg. We've loved it here. Bit of a gray day this morning, but we have had some wonderful sunshine.
Um, back over there, above spirit, you can see is the entrance block reception.
There's a breakfast restaurant there.
And obviously, as I've just said, that's where the barrier entrance is. It runs on um, number plate recognition.
There are cabins over there for hire.
There's a tent area.
And then down there, near reception, is a um, motorhome area, which is quite small spots. And then there's a camping and motorhome spots here.
And then of course, we upgraded ourselves to the cabin.
So, we've got our own washing facilities. I think Andy may have shown you this earlier on. So, I've got sink, shelves, loo, shower. It's been lovely.
We've had a great time. The motorhome spots are 30 euros. The normal camping ones, I think, are 40 euros. And this one that we've got has been 50 euros.
So, the equivalent of about, I think it is, 46 pounds 50. We've had our own space, big space.
Um, and our own facilities. It's been absolutely lovely.
If you go to the entrance there, you go straight on, you get into Middelburg town. Takes about 10 to 15 minutes.
Really nice town. Lots of bars, coffee shops, ice cream, clothes shops. We've done a bit of shopping for Andy. It's been great. And then if you go to the right, you can find a park, which has got some World War II bunkers in it and a bit of history there. And if you go out into the left, um, you just go into the countryside. The whole area is absolutely beautiful. If you've got lots and lots lots and lots places you can go on your bikes if you've got bikes. We really still do miss our bikes, but we'll get some more eventually.
>> We'll end this video here. Join us next time as we head to a camp spot on a beautiful farm in the south part of Zeeland. And then hit to Bruges and explored parts we'd never seen before.
Thank you for watching and we'll see you next time. Bye.
