In 2021, archaeologists discovered the largest ancient city ever found, buried under the Sahara desert for 3,400 years near Luxor, Egypt. This city was built by Pharaoh Amenhotep III at the height of Egypt's most powerful empire but was abandoned almost overnight when his son Akhenaten changed the religion, changed his name, and moved the entire capital to a new city. The discovery reveals rings, amulets, sealed pottery, and tools left exactly where people left them, as if the entire population vanished in a single day. Only one-third of the city has been excavated, and the northern section including an unopened cemetery remains untouched.
