Weather forecasting involves analyzing current atmospheric conditions, including temperature, wind patterns, and moisture levels, to predict future weather events. Meteorologists use radar technology to track precipitation and identify weather systems, such as high pressure and moisture flows, to forecast conditions like rain, temperature changes, and cloud cover. The forecast for Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts on May 23, 2026, indicates cloudy but dry conditions today with temperatures in the 50s-60s, followed by rainy and cooler conditions on Sunday, with showers potentially lingering into Monday morning before clearing in the afternoon.

WPRI 12 Weather Forecast 5/23/26: Cloudy Skies Today; Rainy, Cooler SundayHinzugefügt:
Such a nice [music] story there from Mike. Time now is about 9:49 just about. Looking at a gloomy day with clouds in place. Mainly dry conditions though. We're going to have the dry air hold on a little bit longer for us today before wet weather arrives tonight and for tomorrow. So here of course is Lincoln seeing the clouds out there.
Similar story here in Providence.
Temperatures were rising through the 50s. We'll be in the 60s for the afternoon hours. Right now it's about 58 in Providence, 58 down in Newport and in New Bedford. So again not too bad temperature wise but an easterly wind today about 5 to 10 mph. So that'll make it feel a little bit cooler at times.
Now the radars generally quiet. There is some light green to our south and west but this is all really light stuff and many of it uh most of it is uh not reaching the ground. But notice there is some shower activity across parts of New York, Connecticut. This is all going into dry air in place. So we have dry air overhead of us right now and I think it's going to be kind of reinforced over the course of today to keep that wet weather just off to the west for today.
Eventually as high pressure to our north slides in the Gulf of Maine eventually offshore and that will allow us some of that wet weather to you know reach into our area for tonight and tomorrow. So three key things, mainly cloudy but dry today, rainy for Sunday, cool as well.
Those showers could linger as well into the first half of Monday.
I think the second half of Monday though looks to be pretty good across our area.
Here's the wide view seeing all the wet weather and the clouds of course. Look at the eastern half of the country seeing all this moisture all the way down to the Gulf Coast states and Florida seeing that and uh most of the Appalachian Valley here as well seeing uh again uh some of those uh rain showers. Now for us locally here a lot of clouds in place. Green off to the west. I think this is where it's going to be staying for today. Notice how it's gradually trying to get closer but it kind of hits a wall, right? We have an invisible wall in the air and that's the dry air that's in place keeping us on the dry side for today. So let's time it all out. We'll put it into motion and go uh forward here >> [snorts] >> right into tonight. Notice how about 8, 9, 10 o'clock we'll start seeing some of these showers arriving from the west.
They'll finally be kind of working their way in.
But it's not really until after midnight and towards tomorrow morning where we start seeing some of the steadier rainfall track on through the region for Sunday. So it looks to be kind of a washout for tomorrow. Wouldn't want to have any outdoor plans for Sunday.
Looking at the rain heavy at times tracking through. There could be some lulls here and there in the rainfall, but for the most part it's a soggy day across our area. You can see that here.
This is about 6:00 p.m. for later tomorrow. Showers, maybe a thunderstorm as well. Seeing those darker greens and of course the yellows, oranges and reds representing the thunderstorms tracking on through during the overnight hours into Monday. Let's go into Monday cuz this is of course is a big day for the parades and all the outdoor festivities going on.
Notice by 11:00 a.m. we're still seeing some lingering showers, maybe a downpour. But the heaviest rain that the steadier heavier rain is going to be offshore at this time. But we still have some lingering showers around for the first half of Monday. And then in the afternoon things should dry out. We should even see a maybe a little bit of sunshine 5:00, 6:00, 7:00 in the evening hours. Um Monday evening. So some good news there. Temperatures will be in the low 70s uh for later in the day. So I think we can maybe salvage this holiday weekend a little bit as we go into the latter part of Monday. Of course the pollen count stays high today. It'll be lower tomorrow cuz of the rain.
Temperatures low 70s for Monday. But look at that. Tuesday and Wednesday low 80s, dry conditions. We do get some nicer weather in here uh for the middle part of next week. Full 7-day forecast as always on our website at wpri.com.
