‘It seems ironic’: Weaver on Site C dam’s new name

[00:00:00]What's your reaction to the renaming of the Site C Dam after John Horgan? On the one hand, I admired John and I thought he was a great premier.

[00:00:09]And I thought he deserves recognition in British Columbia for the good work he had done for the people of British Columbia. On the other hand, it seems ironic that this was a a dam that um he didn't want and then he did.

[00:00:22]Uh it was a dam that really was taken past the point of no return by Christy Clark prior to John taking over. And frankly, John was a man of great humility and I think he would feel very uncomfortable having this dam, particularly this dam, uh named afterward him. I think he would be very pleased and tickled pink to find out that there's a university campus at Royal Roads named after him in Langford.

[00:00:47]That's his home. I sure he would have loved that. I don't want to speak for his family, but the John I know would feel very uncomfortable having this named after himself in light of the historical controversy. I um feel very uncomfortable with David Eby trying to express what John Horgan would have thought or wanted. I agree with David Eby that John was somebody who always put the interests of people of British Columbia first.

[00:01:17]I'm not so sure Mr. Eby is this of the same character mold as John.

[00:01:22]In fact, I find it somewhat cynical that this announcement is made right now.

[00:01:27]It's almost a look over there, not here kind of announcement. I mean, I don't want to take away from the legacy of John Horgan because he was a great leader. There's no doubt about it.

[00:01:37]But I I feel uncomfortable when, you know, Mr. Eby makes politics because it strikes me as Mr. Eby's popularity is somewhere in the gutter right now.

[00:01:47]And uh Mr. Horgan's popularity was always very, very high. And by trying to hook your your your kind of rebrand yourself as Mr. Horgan's protege, it's really an attempt in my view at this particular juncture to try to soften Mr. Eby's image across British Columbia.
