I'm a board-certified internist and I specialize in longevity medicine. Today, I want to talk about hantavirus a pulmonary syndrome, the one that happens in the US after exposure to infected rodents. Symptoms usually start 2 to 3 weeks later, sometimes up to 5 weeks. It begins with a prodrome phase like flu, fever, chills, body aches, headache, maybe nausea or stomach pain. Cough is usually absent early on. This stage lasts 2 to 8 days. Then, comes the cardiopulmonary or heart and lungs phase. This is the serious part, but it happens fast. You get sudden shortness of breath, dry cough, and fluid in the lungs. This is why early hospital care is critical. Oxygen, mechanical ventilation, or some advanced devices can save lives like ECMO. Most deaths, when they occur, happen in the first 24 hours of this phase. The good news, the dangerous phase usually only lasts 2 to 5 days. Survivors often improve dramatically within 48 to 72 hours once they pass the peak.

[00:01:18]Full recovery takes weeks to months, but most people get back to normal. Severe long-term problems are rare. This illness is rare. Not everyone exposed gets severely sick. And with modern ICU care, survivor rates are much better than in the past. Do not be scared. Be smart. Avoid rodent droppings. Clean carefully and seek medical help early if you have fever, breathing issues after possible exposure. Knowledge is power.
