Historic Move As 3 Private Players In Race To Build India's Stealth Fighter

[00:00:00]In a landmark move for India's defense industry, the Ministry of Defense today issued the request for proposal for advanced medium combat aircraft or AMCA, the country's first fifth generation stealth >> [music] >> fighter. And for the first time in a major fighter jet program, the government has kept out state-owned HAL and invited three private [music] players. Let's go across to Vishnu Som for more on this entire story. And Vishnu, take us through the developments and how significant is it that three private players have been brought in?

[00:00:28]>> No, no, so this is really important. And remember, a stealth fighter program is absolutely critical for our defenses.

[00:00:34]Stealth fighters have been deployed by China. They've got upwards of 200 J-20 stealth fighters. We don't have a single one. The Pakistanis are looking to acquire Chinese jet fighters as well.

[00:00:43]What is now taking place is that India's indigenous stealth fighter, it's called the AMCA, advanced medium combat aircraft. What the government has done through DRDO is that they have requested, they put out an RFP, a request for proposal, to the three shortlisted bidders. Now, each of these bidders are very well-known companies.

[00:01:00]For example, the Tata Group is is one of the companies. There are others as well who are involved. In fact, I should go through the list of of companies which have been shortlisted because it's interesting. So, there's interesting.

[00:01:12]There's the Tata Advanced Systems Group.

[00:01:14]There's the Larsen & Toubro BL Dynamic Consortium and the Bharat Forge BML Data Patterns Consortium. So, three groups.

[00:01:21]What's interesting over here, Gargi, is that there's no Hindustan Aeronautics.

[00:01:24]Right.

[00:01:25]>> they've done in this case is they've kept HAL out. They want to give private players a chance. And so, there's going to be a 15,000 crore rupee sort of development of prototypes. Now, the government is doing that.

[00:01:37]So, they have told these three firms, we've got 15,000 crores, you build the prototype. If you are able to build the prototype and if subsequent price negotiations work out, you win the contract. And it would obviously be a massive contract.
