In the Korean psychological thriller Oldboy (2003), protagonist Oh Dae-su is imprisoned for 15 years in a private prison by Lee Woo-jin, who orchestrated a devastating revenge plan stemming from a childhood trauma involving Dae-su's accidental witnessing of an incestuous relationship between Woo-jin and his sister Lee Sua. The film explores how psychological manipulation, including framing Dae-su for his wife's murder and manipulating his relationship with his biological daughter Mido, creates a devastating revenge narrative where the victim must sacrifice everything—including his tongue—to protect his daughter from the truth, demonstrating how revenge can destroy both the perpetrator and victim through psychological torment.

He Spent 15 Years Locked Away… Then Discovered a Truth Worse Than DeathAdded:
The man with messy, bird-nest-like hair is Oh Dae-su. Today, he is dragged into a police station for public intoxication and causing a disturbance. Completely drunk, Dae-su keeps yelling and arguing with everyone around him, making the entire station sick of dealing with him.
Luckily, his long-time best friend eventually arrives to bail him out. The moment he steps outside, Dae-su quickly calls his little daughter. Slurring his words, he apologizes for breaking his promise and tells her he'll be home soon to celebrate her birthday. After that, he hands the phone to his friend so he can continue the conversation for him.
But only seconds later, when his friend turns around, Dae-su is gone without a trace. He has been kidnapped by a mysterious stranger. When Dae-su wakes up, he finds himself trapped inside a bizarre room he has never seen before.
The place looks exactly like a cheap motel room, except the window is nothing more than a fake image designed to mock him. Panicked and desperate, Dae-su grabs onto the guard's leg, begging to know where he is and why he is being imprisoned. But the man says absolutely nothing. Without hesitation, he violently kicks Dae-su back into the room and locks the door like he is caging an animal. Time slowly passes.
After being trapped for so long, Dae-su's hair grows long and wild. Then one day, sleeping gas suddenly sprays down from a ceiling. While he is unconscious, a group of mysterious people enters the room, takes away a cup containing his fingerprints, and even draws his blood as if preparing for something truly horrifying. When Dae-su finally wakes up and turns on the TV, his entire world collapses. His wife has been murdered. What is even worse, the police reveal that the prime suspect is none other than Dae-su himself. His fingerprints were found at the crime scene. Completely confused and unable to understand what is happening, Dae-su barely has time to think before someone attacks him from behind and knocks him unconscious once again. From that point on, the only thing keeping him company inside the prison room is an old television. He watches show after show just to survive the endless isolation and stop himself from losing his mind.
But, the longer he remains alone, the more the hatred inside him grows. The mysterious people continue controlling and monitoring him as if he is nothing more than a living toy. Eventually, Dae-su makes a decision. He has to escape. Not only to take revenge on whoever imprisoned him for all these years, but also to prove to his daughter that he is not his wife's killer. From that moment, Dae-su begins preparing for revenge. He writes down the names of everyone he suspects, desperately trying to remember who could possibly hate him this much. At the same time, he trains his body every single day by punching a wall over and over again. He even learns how to fight by studying martial arts programs on television, slowly turning himself into a human weapon. Every single day, Dae-su secretly chips away at the wall using nothing but a pair of chopsticks. Year after year passes by.
After nearly 5 years, he finally manages to dig close to the outside. One day, Dae-su reaches his hand through the crack and catches rainwater dripping from outside. Slowly, he brings the water to his lips, savoring it as if he is tasting freedom for the very first time in years. But, at that exact moment, the familiar sleeping gas suddenly fills the room again. Dae-su desperately drags the bed over to hide the hole he dug, but the gas spreads too quickly. Within seconds, he slowly loses consciousness once more. And when he opens his eyes again, everything has completely changed. Dae-su is stuffed inside a large suitcase. And when the case is finally opened, he is shocked to realize that he has been released in the middle of a crowded city. It seems the kidnapper still isn't done with his twisted game. Not only that, but the man even prepares an expensive suit for Dae-su, almost as if he is welcoming him back into the real world. After nearly 15 years of imprisonment, Dae-su can finally see the sky, real people, and sunlight again. While wandering through the city in confusion, Dae-su comes across a man standing on the edge of a rooftop with his small dog preparing to jump to his death. Without hesitation, Dae-su rushes over to stop him. The man is completely broken and ready to end his life right there. But Dae-su calmly tells him, "If you still want to die, at least listen to my story first." After hearing the horrifying nightmare Dae-su endured for 15 long years, the man suddenly realizes that his own pain feels insignificant in comparison. But for Dae-su, there is now only one purpose left in his life: to find the man who destroyed everything he had for 15 years and make him suffer a hundred times more. While wandering the streets after finally gaining his freedom, Dae-su suddenly runs into a group of violent thugs causing trouble. One of them casually snatches the cigarette from Dae-su's hand and mocks him with a smug grin. But none of them realize the man standing in front of them survived 15 years of imprisonment by punching walls every single day just to stay sane. After all those years trapped in darkness, Dae-su wants to see just how terrifying his fists have become. And the result is even easier than he expected. Within moments, the gang members are lying unconscious all over the ground. Every punch Dae-su throws feels brutally heavy and perfectly precise, as if he has fought these battles thousands of times inside his mind during captivity. Afterward, Dae-su walks into a Japanese sushi restaurant.
At that exact moment, a sharply dressed young man approaches him. Without saying much, the stranger quietly hands Dae-su a Nokia phone and a thick wallet stuffed with cash before immediately walking away. When Dae-su opens the wallet, he discovers an enormous amount of money inside. Now holding cash for the first time in years, he immediately orders food and devours it like a starving animal. The waitress serving him is a young woman named Mido. From the very first moment they meet, both of them feel an oddly familiar connection. But no matter how hard Dae-su tries, he can't remember where he knows her from.
Then suddenly, the Nokia phone starts ringing. The caller is the very man who imprisoned him for 15 years. In a calm voice, the stranger says, "If you want the truth, come find me." Then he hangs up instantly, leaving Dae-su overwhelmed with rage and frustration. The food arrives and Dae-su stuffs it into his mouth, chewing violently as if he is imagining the kidnapper's skull between his teeth. At this point, there is only one thought left in his mind. If he ever finds the man responsible for ruining his life, he will tear him apart with his bare hands. Before he can even finish eating, Dae-su suddenly collapses unconscious. Mido kindly takes him back to her apartment and cares for him. It turns out that after spending so many years without sunlight, Dae-su's body has become severely weakened. When he finally wakes up, he notices Mido reading through his letters and personal journal. Panicking, Dae-su immediately snatches them away and clutches them tightly like priceless treasures. Mido can't help but feel deeply sorry for him. Through the journal, she learns that Dae-su once had a little daughter.
And if the girl is still alive, she would probably be around Mido's age by now. Mido realizes that Dae-su is just as lonely and broken as she is. So she decides to help him. Pretending to be a reporter, Mido begins searching everywhere for information about Dae-su's daughter. But unlike what she expected, Dae-su isn't focused on finding his child right now. After surviving 15 years trapped inside a dark room that felt like hell itself, there's only one thing on his mind. Killing the man who destroyed his life. Then suddenly, Dae-su remembers an important clue. Throughout his imprisonment, he was fed the exact same fried dumplings from a Chinese restaurant every single day. The taste became burned into his memory so deeply that he could never forget it. So, Dae-su and Mi-do start visiting restaurant after restaurant searching for the same flavor. They eat at one place after another. If the taste is wrong, they immediately move on to the next location. They eat so much that both of them nearly throw up from exhaustion. Finally, at the 99th restaurant, Dae-su finds the exact same taste he remembers. Without wasting a second, he immediately follows the delivery worker. And then, Dae-su discovers the very place where he was imprisoned for 15 years. The horrifying truth is finally revealed. This place is a secret private prison. Anyone willing to pay enough money can make another person disappear from society completely. The owner secretly locks victims away inside hidden rooms where nobody would ever find them. And Dae-su was only one of countless victims. The moment he learns the truth, all the rage inside him explodes. First, Dae-su ties up the prison owner like an animal.
Then, he grabs a hammer and brutally pulls out exactly 15 of the man's teeth, one tooth for every year he spent in prison. The screams echo throughout the room, but Dae-su continues without mercy. Unfortunately, even the prison owner has never actually seen the face of the man who paid to imprison Dae-su.
All communication was done through recorded voice tapes. Dae-su immediately takes every tape and prepares to leave.
But before escaping, he still has to fight his way through the gangsters waiting downstairs. Holding nothing but a claw hammer, Dae-su charges forward like a monster. Alone, he battles dozens of men inside the narrow hallway. Every swing of the hammer sounds brutally painful. Blood, screams, and bodies quickly cover the dark corridor. Even after getting stabbed in the back with a knife, Dae-su refuses to stop. After surviving 15 years of torture and isolation, this kind of pain means nothing to him anymore, thanks to thousands of hours studying boxing on television. Every punch he throws is terrifyingly accurate. He knocks enemies down one after another without missing.
Within minutes, the hallway turns into a war zone. But just then, the elevator doors suddenly open. Another group of gangsters steps out, and Dae-su is still standing there, gripping the blood-covered hammer while breathing heavily among piles of unconscious bodies, like a man who just survived a battlefield. After finally escaping the building, his body completely gives out.
Covered in blood, Dae-su stumbles through the streets before collapsing onto the pavement. Luckily, a mysterious young man approaches and helps him stand back up. The stranger even kindly calls a taxi and sends Dae-su safely home, somehow knowing his exact address. But as the taxi drives away, Dae-su suddenly realizes something horrifying. The man who just helped him is the mastermind behind everything. At that moment, Dae-su desperately wants to chase after him. But with his body already pushed beyond its limit, all he can do is helplessly watch the car disappear into the darkness, and the terrifying truth becomes clear. The man responsible for ruining Dae-su's life has been secretly watching his every move the entire time.
After recovering from his injuries, Dae-su immediately seeks out his old best friend. The two sit in front of a computer, desperately trying to remember who from Dae-su's past could possibly hate him enough to carry out such a horrifying revenge. They log into Dae-su's old Yahoo account, and then they discover something chilling. A user named Lee Woo-jin had sent him a friend request years ago. As Dae-su opens the profile, a cold shiver runs down his spine. This person somehow knows nearly everything about his life. At that moment, Dae-su becomes certain. This is the man who imprisoned him for 15 years.
His friend quickly traces the IP address connected to the account. But the terrifying part is the address leads to the apartment right next door. Dae-su immediately storms over like a bloodthirsty animal. The moment he sees Woo-jin, he presses a knife against his throat ready to kill him on the spot.
But Woo-jin remains unbelievably calm.
He tells Dae-su that if he kills him now, he will never discover the real reason why he was imprisoned for 15 years. Then Woo-jin slowly pulls down his shirt, revealing a pacemaker attached to his chest. He suffers from a severe heart condition and survives only because of the device. In a cold voice, Woo-jin warns him that if Dae-su tortures or attacks him any further, he will simply switch off the pacemaker himself and die instantly. And if that happens, Dae-su will never learn the truth. But Woo-jin isn't finished yet.
Instead, he proposes a new game. Dae-su has exactly 5 days to uncover why Woo-jin hates him so much. If he figures out the answer, Woo-jin promises he will take his own life without forcing Dae-su to do it himself. Before leaving, Woo-jin delivers one final warning.
Mi-do is in danger. Hearing those words, Dae-su sprints home in panic. The moment he opens the door, he freezes in horror.
Mi-do is tied up in the corner of the room, her clothes disheveled. Standing around her are the henchmen of the private prison owner, the same man Dae-su brutally tortured the day before.
They came for revenge. The prison owner wants to pull out exactly 15 of Dae-su's teeth, one for every year of pain he suffered. In that desperate moment, Dae-su pulls out the hidden knife from his sleeve, ready to fight to the death.
But suddenly, the prison owner's phone rings. It's Woo-jin. Not only does he order the gangsters to stop, but he also sends over a suitcase filled with cash in exchange for Dae-su's life. At this point, it becomes terrifyingly clear.
Every single event is still happening exactly according to Woojin's plan.
After surviving the attack, Daesu and Mido grow much closer. Two lonely, emotionally broken people slowly begin finding comfort in each other.
Eventually, Mido even confesses her feelings to him. Overwhelmed by emotion, the two finally cross the line and become lovers. But at that exact moment, sleeping gas suddenly fills the room.
Everything once again turns out to be part of Woojin's twisted plan. When Daesu and Mido wake up, they discover a purple gift box sitting on the table.
Inside is a severed hand. Daesu completely loses control and becomes obsessed with finding Woojin as quickly as possible. The only clue he has now is the name Lee Woojin. After digging through old records, Daesu discovers that Woojin once attended Seung Nak High School, the exact same school Daesu attended years ago. Daesu immediately heads to the school library to search through old archives. While looking through a graduation album from 25 years earlier, he suddenly notices something strange. One photograph shows a girl whose head has somehow been cut out of the image, leaving only her body visible. And then Daesu finally remembers. Her name was Lee Sua. People once claimed she accidentally slipped into a lake and drowned. But the most shocking part is this. Sua was Woojin's older sister. At that moment, the fragmented memories in Daesu's mind finally begin connecting together. Daesu realizes Woojin may have murdered his wife as part of his revenge. But he still cannot understand how Sua's death is connected to him. So, Daesu confronts Woojin directly, demanding answers. And finally, the horrifying truth is revealed. 25 years ago, Daesu accidentally witnessed Woojin and his sister involved in an incestuous relationship inside a classroom. At the time, Daesu casually mentioned what he saw to his best friend. But the friend told someone else, and the rumor spread throughout the entire school. Soon, people began whispering that Sua was pregnant with her own brother's child.
Unable to endure the shame and humiliation, Sua eventually took her own life. After losing his sister, Woojin completely broke mentally, and from that moment on, he dedicated his entire life to creating the ultimate revenge against A-su, a revenge plan so cruel it borders on insanity. Woojin imprisoned A-su for 15 long years without ever explaining why. He murdered A-su's wife and framed him for the crime. But, the most horrifying part of his revenge was Mido, the young woman from the sushi restaurant, the one A-su always felt strangely connected to, was actually his biological daughter. Woojin intentionally released A-su after exactly 15 years, so every part of his revenge could unfold perfectly. He even hired hypnotists to manipulate both father and daughter into being emotionally drawn to each other without knowing the truth. Everything had been planned from the very beginning. At the same time, Woojin orders one of his men to deliver another purple box to Mido, the exact same kind of box A-su received earlier. At that moment, A-su completely breaks down. In absolute panic, he desperately calls Mido, begging her not to open the box because he cannot allow his daughter's entire world to shatter.
If Mido ever discovers that the man she fell in love with is actually her own father, the emotional damage would be beyond repair. A-su immediately calls her again and again, pleading frantically for her not to open it.
Then, for the first time in his life, he abandons every last piece of pride and dignity he still has left. A-su falls to his knees in front of Woojin, begging in complete desperation. He tells Woojin that he can kill him, torture him, or continue taking revenge however he wants. But, there is only one thing he asks in return. Please, don't let Mido learn the truth. Don't let his daughter discover that the man she loved was actually her biological father. Driven completely beyond despair, Daesu even crawls across the floor like a dog and licks Woojin's shoes, willing to humiliate himself in any way possible if it means protecting his daughter. At this point, he is truly ready to sacrifice everything, anything, as long as Mido never finds out. Meanwhile, Woojin bursts into laughter like a complete psychopath. After carrying hatred inside him for decades, he finally gets to watch Daesu completely destroyed both mentally and emotionally.
But even that still isn't enough for him. In the most painful and humiliating moment of his entire life, Daesu suddenly cuts off his own tongue. Using his own flesh and blood, he begs Woojin to spare his daughter from the truth. No more words, no more excuses, no more dignity left. Daesu sacrifices absolutely everything just to protect Mido from that horrifying reality.
Seeing Daesu reduced to such a broken state, even Woojin briefly hesitates.
Finally, he calls his men and gives a single order, "Don't let the girl open the box." Then Woojin slowly points a gun toward Daesu. For a moment, it seems like he is about to pull the trigger and end everything. But after several seconds of silence, Woojin lowers the gun. He decides not to kill Daesu because to Woojin, forcing Daesu to continue living with this unbearable truth is far more painful than death itself. That is the perfect revenge.
Woojin leaves Daesu collapsed in a pool of blood and quietly walks away carrying the twisted smile of a man who has finally completed the revenge plan he spent his entire life creating. What a truly monstrous villain carrying out one of the cruelest revenge stories ever imagined. But even after completing his revenge, Woojin feels no happiness at all. The death of his sister, the person he loved more than anyone else in the world, left an emptiness that could never be healed. And now, he no longer has any reason to keep living. Inside the elevator, Woo-jin finally points the gun at himself and pulls the trigger, ending his own life. Sometime later, Dae-su visits a hypnotist and begs her to erase all of his painful memories. He no longer wants to remember the horrifying truth that destroyed his life. In the film's final moments, Dae-su stands alone beneath the falling snow. Then, Mi-do finally find him, but Dae-su no longer remembers who she truly is. He no longer remembers why he is standing there. Everything, the hatred, the revenge, the unbearable truth has slowly faded into the past like a nightmare buried deep inside his mind.
