The Madlanga Commission, South Africa's investigative body examining police misconduct, submitted its second interim report to President Cyril Ramaphosa, which included recommendations for disciplinary action against police officers; the commission is also investigating drug busts like the Port Shepstone case, which raises questions about police involvement in drug trafficking syndicates, with testimony potentially being given in-camera to protect witnesses.

Madlanga Commission | Canny Maphanga connecting the dotsAdded:
It was an important week for the Mataila Commission. They handed over the second interim report to President Cyril Ramaphosa following the first interim report. In the first interim report, a number of recommendations were made pertaining to police officers that either needed to be subjected to disciplinary hearings or be further investigated and to face charges.
President Ramaphosa, of course, responded to the second interim report by saying that he's studying it. He told SABC News this yesterday when Debora Patta, SABC politics reporter, asked him about it on the sidelines there of that door-to-door that he did there. And of course, another contentious issue for the president to consider is the extension of the Mataila Commission. But important testimony has been delivered by the commission in the past quarter, but importantly this past week as well. Kanima Manga brings you the weekly Mataila Commission wrap here on SABC News and that will be on SA Today following shortly after we conclude here on the week. Kanima Manga join us in studio now. Kanima, what's on the diary this week pertaining to the commission?
>> Well, this week we'll be looking at drug busts, but of course on Friday that is when the second interim report was handed in. Of course, at 4:00 we'll look at the implications of the second interim report.
The reason it doesn't include the core question that informed the establishment of the Mataila Commission. We'll also talk about the possibility that the August 31st deadline is the final deadline and what that means politically, especially for Police Minister Bheki Cele's his own political career and the alleged ambitions that he is said to have. And of course, we'll talk to two analysts about that as well.
Then we'll have a look at some of that drug evidence which is becoming quite prominent this week. And we know that one of those witnesses who describes themselves as an undercover COVID operative wants to give their evidence freely and fairly and only thinks that they can do so if they do so behind closed doors. So, it'll be another in-camera bid with respect to the Port Shepstone drug bust, which is quite prominent in this particular feature of the Madang Commission's work because of the kind of ties that come with that Port Shepstone drug bust and how it is so similar to that we saw in Errol Fine, and it raises questions as to what is the alleged role of the police in these particular drug bust, and what does it tell us about the alleged cartel syndicate and how they work in terms of bringing drugs into the country. So, there's a lot to unpack at 4:00 today as we connect the dots and the Madang Commission resumes tomorrow. And of course, we'll give you that highlight ahead of that important date.
>> Yeah, and I thank you so much for that.
Looking forward to it. Gcina Mangena will be giving you that update as she connects the dots at 4:00 p.m. here [music] on SABC News.
