When shortening a vehicle frame for a widebody conversion, the process involves removing the airbag bolts and four-link components, cutting the frame at the desired location, and rebutting it with a quarter-inch plate to maintain factory specifications. The widebody construction uses steel framing with round stock (quarter-inch or inch diameter) to create the extended body panels, requiring fabrication of new upper and lower control arms that are 6 inches longer to accommodate the wider stance. This approach allows for custom metal shaping and paneling techniques while maintaining structural integrity.

Building my 1961 C10 Wide Body with Limited Tools - Shortening Frame - Hydraulic Handbrake Calipers
Added:[music] All right, let's get this video going. I am so excited to finally get working on my widebody C10.
I've had this truck for two or three years now. I've done a little bit of work on it. That's pretty much what this video is going to be about. But this has been a dream of mine for I can't even remember how long to have a extremely high horsepower widebody old C10. So, I'm going to split up my time.
I've been building on my previous videos a custom motorcycle. I'm still going to do that, but I'm kind of going to work on this on the side as well.
just because I I can't I can't not work on it any longer. It's been here long enough. So, in this video, I'm going to go over upgrading the brakes to Willwood. I have dual calipers on the rear for a handbrake because handbrake, why not? And also, what else did I do? Threw an engine in it. An LS uh 6 that I put together. Oh, and then I also shortened the bedside and shortened the frame. So, we'll go over that in the video. Also, towards the end, I will go over a few other things I've done, not so much on video or things that I'm planning on doing to this truck. So, yeah, I'm going to build it myself. I'm going to build it with the limited tools that I have in my garage. And I am pumped. So, we will get to that video right now.
Heat. Hey, Heat.
>> [music] >> I can't I can't All right, for the C10, just got the Wheelwood brakes. Pretty stoked to get those on. The rear bracket for my Ford 9 in looks like this. This is This comes with the kit, but I want to do the hydraulic handbrake.
So, got some custom brackets machined, some spacers to mimic what that is. Just of course having caliper on one side for the actual brakes and the other for the handbrake.
So, let's get these mocked up and see if my measurements work correct.

[music] >> [music] [music] >> So, I'm pretty close to the point where I need to cut the frame. Just took the bottom of the airbag bolts out. Got to take off the bottom of bottom fourlink and then start sectioning out the frame.
I don't want to have to take off the cab and redo some of these bolts. So, probably going to cut close to here enough to get a weld. Then I'm going to have to cut this bracket off. And then I'll section out eight or nine in depending on how to get a plate. And then I'll plate all sides, top, bottom, left, right, and then measure here to here because I'm going to have to cut this off and put a quarter inch plate in between. So when this gets buted back and welded on, I want to make sure that I'm exactly what the factory spec was, whatever that width is. So I'll measure that and keep going.

[music] Heat. Heat. [music] Hey. Hey. Hey.
[music] [music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] >> So, you're probably looking at this bedside and you saw my rendering and it looks absolutely nothing like that, which is true. These are just the sections that I cut out from the bedside and I just pieced it together to kind of get an idea what the look would be.
Though I'm not going to because originally I was going to take another bedside and fab out the widebody, but the rendering that I have, I like that look way more. And so how I'm end up building the wide body. So my whole goal and objective with this is I don't want to do any fiberglass. I want to do this whole thing out of steel. So, this is going to really push my skill and I'm probably going to have to learn a few techniques on shaping metal and all that, which is I'm excited for. And so, I'll end up probably framing out the wide body with some round stock, like quarterinch round stock or inch, whatever it may be, to get that look and then just start paneling it all together, blending it, grinding it, you name it. Rinse and repeat. So, that's kind of the plan. Also, you'll notice [music] the wheels are sticking out a lot further from the video. Well, that's because I went ahead and bought a different axle that is actually [music] 6 in wider on both sides. And so, that is the plan. 6 in wider [music] on both sides.
The front wheels are poking out a little bit. They're actually 4 in because all I did was get some wheel spacers because I have to do something. I have to alter the upper and lower control arms. So, let me open up the hood and show you that. All right. So, here's my 60 LS pretty dirty cuz it's been sitting here for a while. So, I will be running Holly everything once I get to that point. But, as you can see, that's not cool. That's not safe. All the above. And I'm actually doing 6 in, not 4 in. So, those are 2 in spacers. I have two of them. That's 4 in. I took one off because it doesn't fit underneath my car lift.
But, the objective is 6 in front and rear. So, I will throw that other 2-in spacer on to get the the width that I need that I can start working on the wide body. But eventually, I'm going to have to replace these upper and lower control arms. I'm going to have to fabricate my own that are actually 6 in longer. And so I want to keep I want to be able to lay frame. I want to be able to adjust my ride height. And so the frame and the airbag system is going to stay. But there's some I mean I'm no suspension nerd, so I'm going to need some help feedback. People are probably going to think I'm crazy. That's absolutely fine.
But any feedback on this entire truck, I am all ears. I love responding to comments and getting everyone's feedback. So, please uh rip me apart or actually help me. I [music] don't care.
So, yeah, that's the plan. Not sure if I I really want to get working on the widebody, but I should probably fabricate my upper and lower control arms first, though. The same objective is the same or the same goal is going to happen, [music] getting it 6 in wider.
So, I went ahead and got my two Momo racing seats so I can do the roll cage eventually as well.
And so, that's I don't think there's going to be anything crazy on the inside, but stockpiling some parts. There's those other wheel spacers. And then there's my rocker for the this side of the truck, which is the only actually rust that I have on the truck. Everything else is [music] pretty. It's an Arizona. It was an Arizona truck. Everything else is pretty pretty good. Just surface rust.
Another thing I'm going to do on this truck is some active aerodynamics or active arrow or active braking. [music] So, as you can kind of see, the top of the the cab has this little notch. So, what I'm going to end up do, well, I'm going to cut off the drip rail, make that all flush. But something I'm going to do with this notch, as you can see, it kind of looks like a spoiler. [music] And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to cut the line. So I'm going to pretty much cut this whole thing off so it's independent from the cab itself.
And still working out the details on how I'm going to activate it. But the whole goal would be once I pull the handbrake, the hydraulic handbrake or hit my foot brake, this will start to activate and roll up. And so as you can the pivot points will be here and you can see where it would kind of pivot up. I'm not sure how far I'll go, but I've been seeing a lot of active arrow and I think it's pretty cool and something I've never done before. So, and similar to here, I want to incorporate a similar similar looking rear spoiler on the tailgate that also activates the same. So, they'll both be working together, though. Is it going to really function? Probably not. Is it really? Well, when I say function, will it function? Yes. Is it going to actually slow down the truck for active [music] braking? I don't know. Maybe a little bit, but is it gonna look cool?
Come on. It's gonna look cool.
So, I'm not going to do anything crazy with the with the bed. The only thing unique to my truck. What I'm going to do is I'm going to bead roll everything, just enclose it with all steel, make it look good. But I'm going to put two channels down the center that are going to be also have motorcycle wheel chocks in the front because my goal is to be able to throw two of my bikes in the back of this, lock them down, go go to a car show, cruise around, do whatever. And something I'll also have to incorporate is, as you could see in the rendering, I'm going to have my exhaust ported out the back of the tailgate. So, still deciding on how I'm going to do the tailgate. If I'm going to just make the whole cab or make the whole bedside one piece and not have a tailgate, yes, that's going to make getting motorcycles into the truck a little bit more difficult or I don't know. Ideas, please. I'm all for it, but I've got a couple ideas in my head. Not really sure how to put it to paper yet, but that's kind of the tenative plan for the for the bed.
