Statistics 24 IntroAdded:
hello I'm Rebecca gavar I'm the instructor of your course which is Elementary statistical methods so this course is going to go through uh basically the basics that you need to understand statistics so if you have to go on and take more statistics let's say like statistics for nursing or statistics for a Psychology major things like that you are prepared to go into those classes with some understanding of how statistics is supposed to work so let me get us over to our class so we are using canvas so this class I did set this up last semester and ran through it so there shouldn't be really much in the way of KS on the other hand this is canvas and canvas has these weird breakdowns here and there that um some of we don't understand why they happen so if something doesn't work like there's supposed to be an image and it's not showing up or um you feel like things disappeared by your grade book anything weird like that contact me it's probably I'm not doing something it's probably canvased something and I have to go back and fix it and um I'm used to having to fix settings in canvas and in Lumen which is also what we're using so as a setup we have start here so what we have is a class overview so the class overview is sort of like your cliff notes of your syllabus so like one of the things like I said that happens is canvas sometimes uh makes my images disappear so this was supposed to be an image of a book and some classes it's showing up and someone is not but if we click on it it should give us our textbook the pdf version of it so it gives you a link and Everything Canvas takes forever to come up yeah starting to trying to download your book but if you get tired of that you just click on that and I'll download it yeah you have your whole book right in here open this now and so your schedule because we're an online class the schedule really shouldn't be changing um there shouldn't be days Miss because of weather or anything like that the only thing we have to worry about spring breaks we don't have classes you may have some assignments that are due that are left over from the previous week or previous couple weeks um but that so nothing's assigned during that time but gives you a breakdown of how we're getting through the classes so you can use the due dates to help you through this or you can go through this as well but it's is telling me that my first module which is on terminology and sampling this is what I should be starting this first week um and this is a condensed one other things are going to take a little more time like data types and frequencies would probably take a little more time than terminology and sampling but um it tells you what we should be working on so then if you go to your modules your mod modules are set up like this so that was modules over two periods but what it tells me is that I wanted to talk about the terminology and Basics so I need to know know why I'm doing this assignment and I'm doing this assignment also we see these are dueing the next week um but this is set up that each module is going to have your textbook links so if you don't want to have to like scroll through that whole book the book was more if you wanted to print it out than anything um but this will take you right to those sections of your book you're going to have a pre-quiz which we go over here in a second you're going to have this is your during class so this is your actual assignments so we got it broke up you know got these two the first week these two the next week and then this is the homework to practice that so you got homework for your first section so your first section as you see this is actually two Mondays after the end of this week so you have that to work on that homework let me go back into the class overview so this is your objectives for the class um some of your expectations I actually took out the project so I need to take that out of there but one of the things we have here is a link to several calculators as you see these images work uh you have Desmos scientific most people have used used Desmos especially if you've been to high school in The Last 5 Years uh this is alula statistics calculator this will do um a lot of our measures of center measures of spread measures of position and we'll use it for linear equations or sorry linear regressions we have zc scores and probabilities so that's little more like halfway through the class your student te distribution calculators this is getting towards the latter half of the class and your tcore and P values then we have this one it's code app so there'll probably be a separate video for this later but Cod app is a it's like an online statistics program sort of it's more of a graphing program but you can use it to take data sets and look at it and see you know like how do the data arrange how does one set of data compared to another set of data um so that is more for a few quizzes for you to play with to your pre- quizzes to play with it to see you know to analyze some data before we even start the unit so this class is waited that you have your pre and post quizzes as I had mentioned these are supposed to be done ideally at the beginning of the week the beginning of a unit so most units take about two weeks so you're looking about having made about 80 of these something like that three of them are departmental so they may seem little out of sorts of the rest of them uh but essentially what they do is they got video or they might send you to code app or you might have an article something like that and it's going over some aspect of statistics and the purpose of this is really to sort of um reflect on statistics you know what does it mean to you how do you use it things like that so some of it is to um like I said there's a few places where you have something that's applying to exactly what we're learning other there's one about the Titanic and probabilities right at the beginning of our probabilities unit so sometimes it's to prepare you for the unit uh some of it is sort of to kind of reflect on ideas uh there is one that I have around when we start talking about hypothesis testing that's not exactly hypothesis testing to give you two videos for a weird reason but it's some videos to watch and then you kind of reflect on concepts of hypothesis testing how do we use it why is important um but as I said you have these quizzes you have we call like pre quiz I think it's one and then a post there's a pre-quiz one post quiz those are departmental they look exactly the same did just seeing how your viewpoints have changed over time um and then like I said there's a couple there are just videos and one of them randomly and there is also departmental um what that means the departmental ones I cre a little harsher than the others because those are made by the department to assess the course and assess you and assess that you're actually make an attempt at Learning we have practice so this is essentially which is your homework this is the after class section you have two Monies to finish it um other thing is is I have it set up I say you have two M Mondays to complete it but after the due date you have what you call a late pass if you turn in a late pass I believe it's set up for three extra days and it takes 5% off your grade so if you happen to not be able to finish in time uh don't start panicking and you don't have to send tons of emails about it you can just do it and it'll give you a little penalty uh really you shouldn't be having to use a late pass more than once so you shouldn't be penalized more than 5% but I say at worst you might be seeing like if you have to use one twice you lose 10% of your grade just on that assignment though uh in class this is kind of like what youd be doing if you were in a in person class in person I would do lecture and then have you guys work on some problems so this is set up as assignments where there's a video and then some problems to work on so you can get practice right after we go through it um these are almost just completion grades it's just you actually have to make an effort at it so it's a completion grade but it's 20% of your grade and really you have to do is watch the video work on the problems um if you put in an answer and it Flags is wrong do not completely Panic about that sometimes it's just a weird part of canas especially with the exams that I have to go back and like regrade things so if you think you had the right answer but you like you put in a comma instead of a a decimal point or something like that don't completely Panic about that I'll go back and I'll see it um these will remain open after class but your grade should not change after the due date so if you have to go back and look over something you should be able to do that you will have exams exams will be given on week six and week 13 that takes up 25% of your grade and this is one of the few things in this class that is proctored meaning you have to have somebody essentially watch you do the exam um so the dates may change let's say if like all classes are closed because of weather I will essentially if the same reason because usually when there's a weather event you guys should losing power I would move a date then but other than that nothing else should interfere with the dates um you should be given a window like roughly to five to seven days uh it depends it depends how we're doing that I kind of change it but usually it's five day Windows which are given to complete your exam and you're going to be using a proctoring program called respondes which you pay for when you are in a when you enroll in an online class so you don't have to worry about paying for it again you should already have access to it so these will be also be given in canvas they will cover a couple units prior to that exam um your final exam however is comprehensive meaning everything we cover in the entire class is on that exam this is also proctored through respondus and this one you have a window of three days to take it because you have to take it during exams week um so I'm going to talk a little bit about proctoring here in a second uh this is your grading scale so to pass you basically need a 70 year or actually sorry to pass you need a 60 or more if you want this class to transfer and not have to retake it you probably want a 70 or more uh some places will take D's not very likely though uh I used to actually work uh work happened to enroll students in the classes and you know look at what we were taking and things like that and what we thought was going to go to another school and I can tell you D's don't usually make it if you happen to be taking this class with foundations foundations has to be a c though to pass it just putting that out there so like I said this is like a quick version of your syllabus so if you click over here on simple syllabus this is more up to date and correct than anything but you have my contact information I also have another place for you can find this um so my zoom hours are remote so we have this candly app our website that we can go through that you can schedule so I'll show you about the a little more about this in a second um you have this book which you have the link to um ideally have access to the internet somehow to take the class I try to set up most things so you could do it on a phone or a tablet if you don't have a laptop um there something's not working for you always let me know we'll see if we can I can fix what I can fix I can't fix everything necessarily U it basically it's what settings I have so the the live lectures as in I'm talking I guess I'm not really live I should said just video lectures using PowerPoints what's going to be method of instru instruction those pre quizzes that we had that's another method of instruction because preparing you for the class those assignments that I give you um that you go through the video and through the homework that's also part of the instruction method so we told you about the breakdown here already what I want to get down is some of the policies here so some of the wording is kind of off because I kind of accidentally use some of the wording as if you were a face Toof face class um participation is a must meaning you actually have to you know come in every week do some work if you just like wait till the last minute and try to do it you are going to shoot yourself in the foot um I realize like sports can interfere and everything but do as best do as much as you can or you know try to at least do a little bit every week is what I'm saying um probably one of the best things you can do is just 30 minutes to an hour every day work on something in the class because that's something small and manageable and make sure you can get through that week's worth of material um attendance will be taken weekly as in I'm going to look to see if you attempted work so I can go in and look to see if you actually worked on something and when you worked on it um so I will use that to determine whether you were present for the week um another thing this is used for is that we have a policy that if you miss three weeks a class that we can drop you from the class actually if you miss enough days of class um to towards the beginning we turn it in and this college may drop you without any warning so just be aware that if you start missing days a class you could be dropped out of one not everybody does this but some people I know will drop you from a course and sometimes that will may drop you from other courses as well um so you will be graded on par participation meaning that you do your in-class assignments by the due dates and you work on your pre- quizzes so that's sort of like your participation part of your grade um like I said you have your exams on the sixth and 13th week you can use notes in the calculator and online calculators so those ones I showed you in the class overview I link some of those inside your exam and you can use those on your test uh like I said you have a five-day window so if you miss the exam contact me because I don't really have a policy set up for missing exams because there's not much of a reason you should be Miss guing them when you have 5 days to take it other than you waited till the last minute and something went wrong so i' suggest do not wait till the last minute because you just make things harder on yourself and you make it harder you make it harder on me too because then I'm trying to figure out how to fix it and sometimes it's not that easy to fix and bold if you have trouble in the course please contact me please don't contact somebody else to contact me on your behalf because that just makes things really confusing uh I know a lot of you are in dual enrollment and you have your um counselors or whoever contact me teachers that you have that's really probably the worst way to go about it because it makes it hard for me to know what's going on it's better if you talk to me first because then I can very quickly start solving the situation if I have to go through a mediator it's going to drag something out that you know something that could have been done within a a day will sometimes take a week to get done because I have to like nitpick information from other people um I'd only suggest having somebody else contact me on your behalf if like let's say if something really big happened like you're in sports and you got a concussion you're out or something like that you may want to have your coach contact me if something happens and like your school computers went down and there was no way to get your homework done have a um counselor contact me those are kind of things where it would be beneficial so I have backup otherwise just go to me first like I said it just makes things so much quicker um as time to finish all work on time um I really going to only give extensions if everybody's behind on something there's a few units that it depends on the semester um sometimes everyone does perfectly fine sometimes I have to give you an extension uh don't cheat using AI Tech technology counts as cheating so if use things like chat GPT or anything like that that generates work for you that's considered cheating and not statistics is one of the places where it's really hard to use the cheating um programs other classes it will be flagged there's some classes that if you use AI they have programs that is going to flag that you used it and you can end up in trouble so that does count as cheating um if you just take somebody else's work that also counts as cheating so everything you turn in should be generally something that you worked on now I don't mind if you work with other people it's just don't copy someone else's work last day of the semester is going to be May 2nd I can't accept anything after that because that's the end of the semester and I have to start getting grades out pretty quickly you know you know what there's one part I'll go back and talk about here in a second um let me go through instructor information I'm going to talk about exams and proctoring so this is my information I actually used to live in Stevenville but I recently moved to San Antonio and I'm teaching classes for Ranger from San Antonio uh you have my cell phone number because either I've always had an office home office or split between offices so it was always easier to give you this as my number instead so if you have any questions feel free to text me uh if you text me you know on a weekend or at night and I don't get back with you right away you know don't panic I'm well what either sleeping or I have to do something um if you wish to call me I suggest texting me first because I get a lot of telemarketers and surprising a lot of them come out of Eastland so um a lot of times I don't answer the phone because I assume you're a telemarketer sometimes I got look at the number and tell it's a cell phone but sometimes I can't um and then my email you can always email me here or through canvas as well tutoring hours so these are the hours that I always have open during the week um if something happens and I can't do them I'll send out a message but it will be Monday Wednesday from 12:15 to 3:15 and then Tuesday Thursday from 10:30 to 11 and you can use this app here and these are remote hours on Zoom so you can go here and schedule Zoom hours so it gives you like these essentially like 15 minute Windows um I only have like an half hour on this day so it gives you this window of one of of 10:30 but here you see it's like 15 minute slots i w worry like you have to take up a certain amount of slots it's really more than anything to give me a start time so I go okay you want to meet me at this start time um I don't usually have overlap if we do we do but I say I wouldn't worry about that too much just just pick whatever time you can start and that's what we'll put in there and it should send us both an email so we know that we're meeting each other okay so this has been a little bit of a change so even if your dual enrollment you are supposed to be using respondes for proctored work so used to be it was just final exams for proctored but now we've changed it because we have respondus we can Proctor anything we want and in that case we can use respondus and as I've been told dual enrollment should be used in respondus I know that sometimes if you are one of the dual enrollment student that you have problems that your school can't seem to get responders to work um so if that's the case let them know that I have a test here for them to use to see if they get respond is working um everybody else if you have a personal device you have this here as well to see if it's working so for me it's going to tell me well basically I'm locked out of everything right now but you'll click it and it should come up with some stuff about how to get through respondus and get that set up for you and this is a quick test it's not graded it's just here so you were set up prior to exams so you know respondence works for your your personal device so it's a few questions like one asks you if you can see a link one asks you about a picture one asks you to use a calculator just to make sure that you have all the features that we need are working okay so I'm going to have to leave student view so you're going to see some extra stuff pop up here in a second so kind of just briefly go through what we have to do in a week or a module so your module like I said you have your textbooks you have the pre-quiz so you click on the pre-quiz it should take you right to it here's going to make me do a bunch of extra work but ideally if it is open to you and nothing will let me open it until tomorrow when the semester starts so in this case you're going to have videos here so you'll have these links to click they'll take you to videos I'm not going to click them because the video will start then they'll be me struggling to turn it off um and after you watch the video you're going to have basically some essay questions and because it's a college Lal class I ask that you practice this because this will prepare you for other classes try to write with use proper English as much as you can use pron uh not pronunciation use punctuation where you're supposed to if you start a sentence start with capitalization names places things like that should be capitalize um but like I said it's just asking you some questions here and try to be really thoughtful and think about it as much as you can um like I said this is one of the ones that's departmental so you're going to see these questions again and we're going to basically what we're seeing is how is your thinking evolved over basically I think it's 8 to 10 weeks ter remember exactly where it is in there but about 8 to 10 weeks you'll be assessed on your thinking again but a lot of these are really just going to be essay questions that you fill in so like I said be thoughtful as you can um most your grade is going to be me just going over and seeing if you made a genuine attempt at it if I think there's something went completely ay I'll try to make a comment okay so let me get us back here like I said it takes me a little extra navigation then you have during class so this is like during the week these are your class assignments let me go to build mold like I said you should open up directly to this page not all this extra in here like I have okay so in class assignments terminal ology basis and critical thinking this is telling you it's essentially how this is going to be set up you're not going to see this every time but these problems go along with the classroom lessons which we're going to have here in a video when prompted work on the questions in class the purpose of this assignment is to get practice while in class so we're pretending like we're in class they will uh this will be graded but it will be graded kindly if I see like a genuine T like if you go through and you put an a for every question I'll know you it wasn't genuine if I see you try to get the right numbers you know I'll pretty much give you the credit for it um so I know that these is your F these are your first stabs of these problems so I don't expect things to be perfect so this will be given during your class time or essentially your first week here um I'm not going to open these up later like I said you should be able to view them it's just you're not going to be able to change your grade later but you're going to have these videos so these are all the videos and I don't make great videos as you can see they're not perfect they're basically like my me writing out the questions for you like I said if you had Miss Brown's class she has these really nicely set up videos and mine um look like filth compared to hers if you go through that you're going to see this video and then there's a group of questions so there's two questions that go with that video to work on so you just type in your answers then you watch this video you have a question um sometimes I have like a little scenario to think about and this one has like six questions to it so sometimes you have to scroll through but that's essentially with these assignments are sort of like just kind of quickly go through like not quickly but you know to watch the video some of them are a little longer than others I try to keep most of them down to about a half hour or less um some of them didn't make it um you should have infinite attempts at this so if you can't like let's say you only have time to do the first video on these two questions you should be able to do that and then submit it if you wanted to we should be able to keep going through it if it locks you out any assignment locks you out before you email me what you want to do is that make sure you go through the module look on again and see if you're still locked out in that case if that happens you're genuinely locked out um canvas has this weird thing if you try to go through the grade book or you try to go through that thing on the homepage that lists your assignments if you had already attempted it it doesn't let you back in if you go directly through the module should always let you back in um after that so it is going to I'll have to reset my here in a second just SEC every time I start this it makes me do go through that um it'll probably have you click something that essentially signs you up first alumen so I'll go to student preview lacks me out um but that's what I hate about this first Daye uh beginning of the semester yeah it's going to lock me out if I do it that way um but what it should do is it will come up with the assignment and then you just have to start it so you won't have student view and teacher view you'll just have one view but it'll go through an assignment for you so let me just show you what it looks like so here it'll tell you you have three tries at each question and then you get a new one you know so if I get it wrong traic because think it's ratio okay um I get it wrong three times I just hit get a similar question sometimes it gives you the exact same one if you get stuck on it you always hit message instructor and it see it puts that question right in here it will tell take me to this question so you can ideally kind of tell me what went wrong when you sent this to me not just help um give a little bit of an explanation but then I can go through and look at it and see what we were struggling with but then like let's say you're just you're tired of that one it's not making sense to you you can skip ahead and work on another problem if you wanted to um some of them have extra stuff like videos and things like that attached to them uh but all of them like not everyone has a video but pretty much all of them they should say message instructor if they don't that means the setting broke again and I have to go fix it um like I said I just checked my settings so they should be working if you're late this will come up again you'll see the assignment but it'll say late pass okay ST view and another thing is like once you're done with a unit if you don't want it sitting your way you can just do that and it closes down everything and you don't have to see it um some of these like the scripted statistics you'll have a video on using calculators this one has Excel too but also you should have a link to the calculators so that's the calculator we're using it's linked in there you can use it again so like I said some have just that little extra in there okay but that's it for a quick overview of the course if you have any questions feel free to contact me um I usually answer emails probably within a day or two and text messages text messages usually answer a little quicker um if you don't hear something right away sometimes that's means I'm just still working on trying to solve the problem but I always tell everybody after like two or three days and you don't hear any back from me uh contact me again it's quite possible that either I didn't get the email or sometimes usually what happens is I get like 10 emails at one time and yours gets buried under a bunch of them or forgotten in the mess of emails that I get um so just you know it's not something personal It's just sometimes they get lost and sometimes I have too many um messages to go through but like I said if you have any questions feel free to contact me and I hope you enjoy the semester and I hope it's a much warmer one than starting out as
