The book of Job teaches that God allows extreme, inexplicable suffering (Job-like ordeals) not because of our sin or for spiritual growth, but to prove the reality of our relationship with Him and train us to love God for His own sake rather than for secondary blessings. God's purpose in these ordeals is to help us develop a relationship with Him that will sustain us in eternity, where we will love Him more than any earthly blessing or relationship. In Job-like suffering, God expects only that we remain faithful Christians, not that we become better Christians. This suffering serves God's purposes for our eternal salvation, not the devil's, and ultimately leads to deeper worship and joy.
