In Minecraft, cave biomes like lush caves can be modified to generate on the surface through data pack changes, as demonstrated by creating surface lush caves in desert biomes; this addresses community feedback about deserts needing refreshment and shows how biome generation can be customized to add visual variety and new exploration opportunities.

After 8 YEARS, is it finally time for this?Added:
Who remembers this from 8 years ago?
>> Our deserts have always felt a little >> in need of refreshment.
>> Well, this discussion has come back.
This is an abandoned village with a surface sulfur cave right above it, right next to spawn. And what you can see over here are cobwebs. We have zombie villages over here burning. If you want to save these guys, you have to run right across the water here, I mean boat, and protect them because they're kind of stupid. Now, why did I spend so much time trying to look for this thing?
3 days ago, Dashp challenged me to find the rarest possible village seed ever, which is an abandoned village trapped inside a surface sulfur cave. And after half a days of passive searching work, I have found one that is exactly this.
Now, this is not the topic of this video. I'm merely showing you what is possible. Now, with this update, ever since the positive decisions Mang have made during this entire snapshot cycle, even though it may have been an accident, often times good things can come out of it. Now, speaking of accidents, I wanted to draw your attention to a tweet Lady Agnes made about 6 years ago. She said, "Haha, oops. I was trying out a world gen feature for lush caves, but managed to have it generating absolutely everywhere. This was back when lush caves were being introduced into the game. But what you're going to notice is something that people have been asking for all this time, which is a desert biome update. Yeah, remember the desert update, the one we didn't get >> in need of refreshment."
>> And now this entire discussion has been brought back because of this exact reason. I hope more cave biomes get added and appear on the surface as well, similar to lush caves shown in a previous post by Agnes on Twitter. It's a very very reasonable piece of feedback. I can see this happening.
Absolutely. Because we now have surface solver caves. Why not do the same thing for lush caves where lush caves can randomly somehow peek out in the exact same way as these guys over here, but only in deserts. Now, I have done that with a very simple data pack trick. I want to show you how we can very simply transform the desert with one very small change cuz deserts right now look like this. Not nothing much is going on.
Deserts are also extremely rare biomes.
They have lava lakes. They have some water features which I will assume is their version of an oasis. Oh, and they have the desert well.
You guys like this? Well, now if you aren't aware of what people do with deserts these days, it kind of goes something like this.
Now, as mundane as this looks, it just goes to show you what the state is of this biome. Sand really isn't renewable.
So, if you're lucky enough to find a desert, you take the cacti for the green dye and then you absolutely obliterate the biome for sand. So, deserts can receive a lot of benefit if we can liven it up a little bit. Now, I know lush caves can spawn on the surface for the very simple reason that if you create a single biome world of lush caves, you can actually get them to spawn all on the surface like this. If you remember, this was not the case with sulfur caves until they patched it. So, this is a single biome world of lush caves. An absolutely crazy experience. Nothing that you'll ever see in game. You sort of have square patches of clay, drip leaves, water, aelia trees over there.
It's like a parasitic crazy generation of caves here, but we're only interested in the surface lush cave generation. So, knowing that this is possible, all we need to do is get this to generate on top of an existing biome. So, I made a data pack. So, this is a brand new world, and I've applied the data pack, which will essentially allow lush caves to spawn on the surface. And here we go.
You can see it's so far away. Deserts are so rare. And look at this. I have generated surface lush caves on this desert. Now, I've made it really common.
I didn't do exactly what the picture has asked for, although you can modify it very easily. But notice how every single lush cave feature is now spawning on the surface here. We have the clay, we have the water, we have the drip leaf, we have the Aelia trees, and this extends for miles and miles and miles. This is not limited to just the ground here.
This does rise above the cliffs. This is obviously very different to what a surface sulfur cave looks like. And you know what's really cool about this seed?
We have a silver cave intersecting with a lush cave intersecting with a desert.
So you know that meme. This is exactly what you might have to come to expect.
So we have the lush caves back here that extends to the surface. And we sort of have the gradient forming towards the sulfur caves. Back here we have a jungle period. Just above it we have all of this happening. Inside we have clay and glowberries. And the interior is sort of covered here too. There's otherwise a lot to explore. Now all of this is customizable. But now I'm going to show you what a lush cave village or a lush village could potentially look like. And this is what it comes out with. This desert village is suddenly so busy.
We've got another one over there. But this village is suddenly also overrun.
Very similar to the sulfur villages that I showed you guys last week. Very hard to traverse or navigate. This one over here. Oh, this is an abandoned desert.
What? Oh my god. No way. So sorry. I'm kind of shocked right now. I didn't mean to find this. Okay. Well, I mean this is completely ridiculous anyway. This has to be modified. So this is the world gen file for the desert. Now you can change a lot of stuff here because biomes are now data driven. So you can change the background music. You can change the sky color, water color, foliage color, things like that. Just over here we can see all the features that the desert has. We have lava lakes, amethyst geos underneath, fossils, the infamous desert well. We can keep going down here. The lava springs, the water springs, even more stuff like the dead bush, some mobs that will spawn and the weight for them.
And then the biome temperature. Now, you'll notice I've added some extra features which caused all this debuckle.
These are all lush cave specific features. You can change all of them.
You don't really need any of this stuff except for this. The lush caves clay is what you're seeing on the surface. So, what we're going to do is actually delete these. We're going to delete this as well. And for the actual feature file, we're going to change how much it actually spawns. 64 is ridiculous. We're going to change that to 16. We're going to reload the world here to see what changes we've made. And have a look. Not as pathetic as it was before. You can still see it's generating in chunks of squares which is exactly what the feature does. You can do a lot of different modifications but over here you can kind of see the spread of what's occurring. You can modify these to be as sparse as you want but just by doing so we are almost exactly emulating what Lady Agnes has shown in that screenshot.
But now we kind of have lush caves everywhere or at the very least an idea for what deserts could look like. So next time you hear Jeb say something like this in need of refreshment.
>> Perhaps this is a baseline for what the community is looking for for the desert update. I'll leave the data pack in the description. Tune in to Minecraft Live in a couple of days. I'll be covering it over on Twitch. There's a lot of speculation right now about a new dimension, some big drop. I have no idea we'll all know about it at the same time very soon.
