Many of us have heard of the overt narcissist, but did you know that there's also malignant narcissism as well? Let's talk about the differences today. An overt narcissist wants admiration. A malignant narcissist wants control. An overt narcissist is usually easy to spot, right? They are arrogant, attention-seeking, they're entitled, they're trying to be the center of attention, they're seeking status, it's all about their image. They want to be seen as superior. They want to dominate groups, conversations, they seek validation, and they struggle with criticism. Now, malignant narcissist takes narcissism to a next darker level.
They combine narcissistic traits of manipulation, cruelty, aggressiveness, a lack of remorse, and sometimes even enjoy hurting other people. While an overt narcissist may hurt people because of their selfishness or ego, a malignant narcissist will actually intentionally create emotional damage. They'll create fear, confusion, and chaos to maintain a power structure. The key difference is is the overt narcissist is all about admiration. Now, the malignant narcissist is about fear and obeying them and depending upon them. Malignant narcissists are most likely to gaslight you intentionally, to manipulate without any sort of guilt, to punish people emotionally, they'll seek revenge when they're challenged, and they also enjoy these power struggles. One of the big keys is that when they're in a relationship, they will create trauma bonds through fear and affection cycles.
And remember, not every narcissistic person is malignant, but malignant narcissism can be emotionally and psychologically damaging and dangerous because of the calculated nature of their behavior.
